oh, the fundamental wrong o' information piracy is ridiculous old. without paying, a couple o' guys sneak into a tent to watch melanie the magnificent do her dance of twelve veils. even before codified notions o' theft or trespass, it were kinda obvious that the sneaks were doing something wrong. our petty voyeurs might complain that melanie weren't all that magnificent and that the ticket prices were ridiculous. far less likely they might observe that melanie were a slave and that their sneakiness were a protests 'gainst the way in which the performer were being exploited. heck, is not as if our sneaks stole anything and they weren't even preventing any paying customers from seeing melanie. after seeing melanie the first time they might agree that the show were worth the cost o' admission and so they were gonna pay to see her next time, honest. in fact, their viewing were creating an additional advertising opportunity for the show-- melanie and her promoters oughta' thank the sneaks for their help. etc. is old stuff we is talking 'bout. ridiculous old. the excuses is as lame today as they were in prehistory. The morality of Animancy
Gromnir replied to Nonek's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
that is just the kinda nonsense that gets threads pruned. is nothing wrong with you being hurt or sensitive or whatever, but be careful o' doing this kinda silliness where it is gonna get threads closed. "I was referring to exploiting the morality of judges or jurors to side with your preferred side in a trial, not using a trial to decide upon the morality of animancy. " yeah, as we said, real trials is bad for that kinda thing, particularly criminal trials. but, as is a game, no doubt you could do all kinda stuff that need not be least realistic. depending on what you mean by "exploiting" in reference to judges and jurors, we can see wonderfully moral ambiguous actions used to influence trial outcomes that might seem like hypocrisy in light o' your ultimate goal. am just not a fan o' trials though as we has too much experience with such. in any event, moral charged scenarios should present themselves. we would be disappointed if obsidian didn't use such. the cooperation and/or freedom o' the evil or complete amoral animancer is your only hope of ending the threat of the, "Undead (that) abound in Heritage Hill"? sounds doable. perhaps long term results o' helping animancer pose greater threat than the undead rampaging in one locale? or... whatever. for obsidian to include such obviously fertile soil for moral conundrum and then not til that field would be almost criminal. *eye roll* this game is being sold, in part, as a re-imagining o' bg2 and the ie games. obsidian is not being shy 'bout their black isle history. what thin veiled hypocrisy it would be to ignore the bad while lauding the good. ... and am not having the foggiest notion o' what, "put your money where your mouth is" means in the present context. am not sure that phrase means what you think it does. shush. don't you realize that it is complete unfair that some folks can afford ferraris and private jets? is nothing we can do about such injustice, but piracy helps level the playing field, if only a smidgen. no longer will expensive day one releases o' software be enjoyed only by the rich. sure, we could says that, particularly for games, all one needs do is wait a year and the title will likely be 50% as expensive, but is that a hurdle the damned bourgeois need consider? no! is manifest inequitable, and folks in eastern europe and southeast asia have no choice but to pirate games and movies in their fight to make the world a better place for puppies, grandmothers and cancer patients. does shadysands have something against cancer patients, grandmothers and puppies? HA! Good Fun! Not sure if that was good topic for irony Ha! Stupid Fun! actually, given the nature o' the arguments in favor o' piracy, am thinking irony is particular appropriate. HA! Good Fun!

*sigh* the bis games were delayed 'cause o' the developers working on the games couldn't make deadlines. many o' the black isle guys were the same as were working on poe. the guys in charge at obsidian were the guys running the development side o' things at bis. even the name obsidian is clear meant to make us recognize their links to black isle, so to pretend no such link exists is ridiculous. someyou body not seem to clear on facts, and it ain't Gromnir. oh, and if list alll the bis folks not at obsidian, we will once again noe all the turnover in the industry. many of the folks who were at obsidian during development of kotor2 ain't their now, but the guys running things is the same. you wanna pretend that the obsidian guys didn't develop games previous to obsidian? HA! but okie dokie. kotor2 were obsidian and yeah, it does speak to their abilities as a business organization. the only positive 'bout the failures o' kotor2 were that the most glaring failure were so simple and obvious that it is unlikely they ever repeat it. nwn2 were delayed. motb were delayed. soz... no idea. can't recall. stick of truth were delayed multiple times and it were still a buggy mess. etc. you got a funny kinda recollection for facts. "history doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme." wanna blame on publishers? *chuckle* if happens every time, regardless o' publisher? and obsidian is free to makes the contract with the publishers. HA! Good Fun!

was our thinking that fire emblem games were squad-based tactics/strategy rpg games with some very limited rpg elements beyond the character development/leveling options. were for hand-helds. is the new fire emblem more o' a traditional jrpg? honest question as we hasn't played a fire emblem game since... fire emblem... the one from 2003/4ish. ... imagine the sound of Gromnir's jaw hitting the floor. yes, ultimately is the publisher that decides when a game is released, but you is bug-nut crazy if you think it was interplay that delayed iwd development so that it were released same time as diablo... or any o' the other dozen or so delayed releases. c'mon. oh, and the "unreasonable" stuff from kotor2 is indicative o' what we were saying 'bout the importance o' business and management in a game development. the brobdingnagian failure to get an extension and its terms in writing were the kinda thing that should be taught in all o' those game developer schools as an object lesson in fail. obsidian can't blame anybody this time. will be interesting. HA! Good Fun! ps we will concede that the final delay for ps:t were out of developer hands as it were a gold failure. am never even having heard o' such a thing since then. but that were only the final delay, and it were brief.

given the amount of turnover we typically sees in the game industry, am thinking some o' you is vastly overstating the teamwork aspect. seems smarter to keep some core people and develop a system that is flexible and built on a proven infrastructure. that way your team don't collapse every time you lose a key person... or two. Gromnir don't do software, but that is how we do things in the business world. that being said, even with their super-team intact, obsidian has never met an announced target release... 'least none that we can recall. honestly, we didn't follow ds 3 at all, so we cannot speak to that development, and we honest don't recall soz release dates. heck, obsidian messed with vaunted team chemistry and brought in tim cain.... and he has an even worse history when it comes to release dates and bugged games. "history doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme." HA! Good Fun!

"Project director Brian Fargo has reassembled key team members from the original Wasteland: Alan Pavlish, Michael A. Stackpole, Ken St. Andre and Liz Danforth,[21] as well as the early Fallout games' designer Jason Anderson (Anderson, however, left the company in December 2010).[22] The composer Mark Morgan, who created the soundtracks for Fallout and Fallout 2, was also hired to compose music for the game.[23]" is a crap wiki quote, but even Gromnir recognizes those names. and am not sure you understand what we mean by infrastructure. when you run a company, there is all kinda infrastructure you need to keep things running. from obvious business stuff such as accounting, to game-specific aspects such as QA... am recalling that uncle feargus mentioned that one o' his most important contributions to bioware's development o' baldur's gate were helping set up their QA. game resources? *chuckle* is funny you make note o' that seeing as how virtual every black isle/obsidian game that is gonna appeal to poe fans were built on some other developer's engine: ps:t. iwd, how, tials of the luremaster, iwd2, kotor2, neverwinter nights 2, neverwinter 2: motb, storm of zehir and fallout: new vegas. quite the list, no? heck the cancelled TORN were being built on a licensed engine. take away all the games that black isle/obsidian built on some other guy's engine and what you got? HA! Good Fun! ps alpha protocol were unreal 3, yes? forgot that one.

InXile was not an RPG studio prior to Kickstarter, not even remotely. Sure, there's Brian Fargo, but he's a CEO, not a game designer. It's very different from the dev team behind Pillars, who have made this type of game (realtime with pause narrative-focused party-based RPG) numerous times before, be it at Black Isle or Obsidian. dunno, but we did a quick looksee at the guys working at inxile and many o' them worked on the original wasteland-- is folks who got Loads o' experience in the industry. inxile itself has 'been 'round for a decade and so they got all the basic infrastructure o' an established game developer. these guys is hardly a bunch o' n00bs playing at being game developers. look at it a different way: is a bunch o' guys working on wasteland 2 that if we sudden heard obsidian had hired them, we would expect this board to spawn multiple new threads talking 'bout what a great addition those folks would be to the poe team. HA! Good Fun!

lack of videos and screenies don't bother us and do not make us believe poe is delayed. as we noted above, wasteland 2 looked pretty darn raw in early videos and screenies. perhaps obsidian simply don't wanna have to explain over and over that game ain't finished. nevertheless, am trying to think of a game that were released in the initial time-frame offered to the public. torn were cancelled by black isle a mere 6 months before what woulda been the s'posed release date we had been given. after torn were cancelled we were informed of all the problems that development faced, but such stuff were unknown to us right up until surprising announcement o' cancellation. iwd, which were a super-quicky development with a clear and obvious goal o' getting released before diablo 2 and bg2, took a few extra months... and had misfortune of being released at same time as diablo 2. oops. planescape had some funny delays, and some kinda mix-up with the gold as well. more recent, how many delays did obsidian face with stick-of-truth? after torn and iwd, black isle stopped giving release dates. they would say that they were "shooting for a Q3 release," or something similar. "it will be done when it is done." *chuckle* 'course that were nonsense for us on the boards. whether it were announced to us as a release date, the publisher were still giving retailers target dates n' such as those retailers were wanting to make guesstimates 'bout inventory and shelf-space 'n such. of course we would discover the dates given to retailers, soooooo... kickstarters is different though. no publisher. wasteland 2 were 'posed to be released october last year, yes? now is august this year. inxile may be a new company, but the guys making the game are industry vets. *shrug* Gromnir would be very surprised if poe actual were released by end of 2014 as that would make it near unique for a obsidian/black isle development released in a timely fashion. at the least, we suspect they use the "winter 2014" to potentially stretch to march 20, 2015 as that is the first day o' spring. what is the genuine motivation to hit their target release date? is not as if they is being paid by a publisher for meeting various development thresholds. and again, obsidian has a rep for buggy releases. if they take a couple extra months to get poe relative stable, am thinking it will be time well spent... especially as we cannot think of another crpg release for winter of 2014 so no competition for nerdling dollars. HA! Good Fun!

where did Gromnir prevent anybody from having a differing opinion? please explain. am not having comic villain powers whereby we can snatch opinions from your brain. we don't even have board moderator prerogative, so is not as if we could prevent you from posting opinions. so, what additional nonsense is you gonna spout? you got an opinion? is nothing Gromnir can possibly do to stop you from having or posting such. the irony o' you referring to Gromnir as anal and obnoxious is not lost on us however. nevertheless, as you don't seem to be catching on quickly, your name calling and/or spam is likely to result in thread pruning. we don't particular mind you acting out in such a manner. is kinda sad, but is common. the thing we would find unfortunate is if your wailing gets the thread pruned. that would be disappointing. the fact that animancy has been in use for a long time is as meaningful as your earlier time period observations-- which is to say, not. am suspecting that near all but the most dedicated existentialist will agree that slavery, while widely embraced in real world history, were immoral. the existentialist is actual a non-factor as he is gonna argue against the possibility o' morality in the first place. so, assuming that there is any kinda morality at all, am thinking it is obvious that stuff such as slavery and misogyny did not shed moral turpitude after some number o' years or centuries o' abuse and acceptance. one could argue that if the s'posed victims o' things such as slavery, misogyny and/or animancy do not see selves as victims and is functional willing participants in the systems that create, support and perpetuate such evils, then there is no actual evil being done. nevertheless, should be obvious that it is not time that gives legitimacy. top hockey players invariably state that stanley cup>olympic gold>world championship is the way these things is ranked . is too bad that folks gotta schedule world championship same time as nhl playoffs. at least in basketball they do during the nba off-season. sure, some nba stars still ain't gonna risk injury and so forgo world championships (regardless of their nationality) but at least there is a much better opportunity to get nba stars involved. have immediate following or contemporaneous with the premiere professional league playoffs is seeming like poor judgement. all us fans follow the draft 'cause we know a great draft (or two) can turn a team into a champion... and maybe even a dynasty. bill walsh and chuck noll were great coaches, but they benefited from some historically fantastic drafts. jimmy johnson... well, Gromnir has never been convinced o' his Xs and Os acumen, but we would be seeming silly to fail to recognize his coaching. early in his career he had some o' the best drafts... evar. his draft genius seeming disappeared over time. funny how that happens. now, lets look at the ny giants. it usually takes 3-4 years to see if a draft was genuine successful. the 2010 draft for the giants was considered above-average at the time. jason-pierre paul were a win in the first round... sorta. he had two very productive years. unfortunately, he had back issues last year that necessitated surgery. will he regain his pre-surgery form? 'course injuries can be difficult to predict. the thing is, every other draft pick o' the ny giants from 2010 were waived or traded w/i 2 years. makes 2010 a fail for ny by any standard of measure. were the scouts for the ny giants just a bunch of idiots in 2010? every pick waived or traded? 'course they weren't idiots. no matter how many man-hours o' effort or millions o' dollars an nfl teams invest, they don't have some secret formula for predicting nfl success. yeah, good research significant increases the odds, but so much o' the draft is just dumb luck, and regardless, you won't know for three to four years if the 2014 draft for the giants were any good. that is the reason Gromnir is much in favor o' drafting team needs. a "reach" is something for mel kiper or the espn analysts to grouse 'bout. if you believe a player will help your team and he won't be available when you pick next, take him even if he is a reach. worst case scenario you probably have a back-up or practice squad player for a year or two. HA! Good Fun! ps ignoring all the michael sam wackiness, we think the first half of the rams draft was excellent. 'course they had 2 picks in the top ten, so they better have had a good draft. the raiders didn't have a remarkably terrible draft, which is kinda remarkable in itself.

Gromnir replied to Halsy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
make contacts with developers & publishers. darker side of coin above: given the typical turnover rate in game industry, most folks at obsidian is probable needing to be conscious of looking for another job. get good ideas when looking at new games and picking brains o' other developers. see where other developers is screwing-the-pooch so obsidian can avoid making similar mistakes on their own games. experience is not always the best teacher. etc. obsidian is a developer who is gonna wanna be making games after they finish poe. attending stuff like e3 is part o' doing business. aside: the pasty-faced social wrecks who make games sometimes need an excuse to get out and interact with new people. e3 is a good excuse. good for morale and all. *insert silly eye-roll emoticon here.* if you want to talk animancy, what is the purpose o' your quoted post? more nonsense. 'least your other nonsense were tangential related to the topic at hand. see, technically your quoted post is spam. be aware of such in the future lest the moderators use as an excuse to prune the thread. add something relevant to topic--anything. example: aninmancers create undead and make secret police possible. these actions alone may call into question the morality of the animancer. however, the question o' the morality o' animancy itself is arguably entirely different. for example, the actions o' fritz haber is rare used as a condemnation o' the field o' chemistry itself, though perhaps in an earlier time his contributions would have been used to damn chemistry and chemists en masse. the distinction 'tween the morality o' animancer and animancy may be nothing other than petty sophistry. and again, manipulation of souls is unique. see is not hard to be on-topic even if mor's actual goal is something entire different. please refrain from littering the thread with spam and at least make an attempt to stay on-topic with a relevant observation or opine. sheesh. It's essentially like buying a real book and then giving it to your friends to read it, Honestly, how many centuries old is the custom of lending a book/lawnmower/whatever to your friend without it being a crime? Do we have to start now? I mean yeah, it's a very blurry issue with the advent of digital posessions, but if my sister could lend me a novel (which is you know, her property now) without the police crashing the door down, that would be great. And here is the problem, you pay 10 bucks for a book, and you can lend it out, you buy an ebook for 10 bucks and you can't do that without handing over an expensive electronic device, deprivig you of the rest of your ebooks, or making a copy, which is illegal. So charging for ebooks the same as physical books, which is what is happening now that publishers instead of retailers are setting prices, is ridiculous. that isn't a problem. it may be stupid, but it isn't a problem. don't buy the ebook if it is ridiculous to do so. buy the paper book. if you and many other similar folks begin buying the arguably superior paper book, then those who make ebooks will, quite naturally, come up with a solution. copyright laws does result in wacky possible situations. laws don't spontaneously pop into existence. it typical takes some time to get a law on the books. the process o' making laws tends to be a bit messy and rare is the most practical or efficient method gonna be the result of lawmaking. once on the books, laws that maybe were meaningful at the time o' their creation, becomes obstacles... and is even harder to get a law off the books than it is to get on. example: drive a car on non metropolitan road at night in pennsylvania has a bizarre requirement-- the motorist is 'posed to stop every mile and send up a signal flare to clear roads of possible livestock. is on the books even today. lawmaking is a slow process that is the result o' compromise. tech moves fast, and is very... uncompromising? that being said, having a paper book be a better option is not proof that copyright is bad. if piracy weren't a factor, the market would react intelligently and far quicker than would the copyright laws themselves. copyright can have odd results. lots o' laws gots funny results. find an inconsistency won't be a particular good excuse for supporting piracy though. piracy is the problem, not the solution... not that Gromnir is suggesting that oerwinde made such a ridiculous claim. what kinda yutz would do that? HA! Good Fun!

"It is an investigative police organization, similar to Scotland Yard," statements such as the above is not facts and is not clear supported. we don't find the name particular compelling, and as already stated, being a secret police does not in anyway diminish the likelihood of having detectives investigating murders. the gestapo was an investigative group. what made them a secret police group were their methods and their agenda/motivation. additionally, the gestapo were administered by the ss and they were frequently uniformed. many members o' the aforementioned Inquisition had uniforms as well and their purpose clearly were investigative. etc. you are making a large number of guesses. is nothing wrong with doing so. typical that is how we make sense o' things when we don't have all the answers or enough facts. all of which ignores the Fact that josh identified "Dunryd Row" as "secret police." josh's undergrad degree is history. that too is a fact. is it possible josh doesn't understand the difference 'tween a plain clothes police force and a "secret police?" am s'posing it is possible, but how likely do you think that is? as 'tween your guessing, and the black letter meaning of josh's words which were in no way contradicted by identifying uniforms or investigative duties of dunryd row, am gonna go with clear black-letter meaning. "From where I'm at, this job description does not exactly fit the term 'secret police' in that it is not primarily a tool for political coercion or suppression of dissent, but it is clearly different from your normal town guard to make use of the term warranted." there is absolutely nothing we has seen that would preclude dunryd row being a tool (not need primary btw) of political coercion and suppression of dissent. at the same time, Gromnir does not see why carrying out ordinary police duties would preclude dunryd row from being properly identified as a secret police force. how small is orlan's? cipher looks to be doing something with a bladed weapon that has a reddish stain on it. he gots a johnny carson carnac pose going on, but we cannot say with any certainty if he is using arcane powers, or is perhaps just a bit of a drama queen. maybe he need an aspirin? one would guess his outfit is a uniform as it prominently displays a symbol o' a raised fist with... dunno, a tiny bloody mace? the uniform could be showing allegiance to personal house, a governmental entity, or perhaps a local retro-ska band. we rare assume. that being said, if the cipher is investigating, we cannot hazard context beyond possibility that he/she (is orlan males and females distinguishable at first glance?) is investigating an incident that included violence... or somebody used a rather unwieldy tool to spread raspberry jam on their toast. were there a crime? if there were a crime, were it political in nature? sabotage? political assassination? a simple b & e gone bad? as for most recent post, we has no difficulty reconciling the investigation o' murders with gestapo. the gestapo had detectives. however, the crimes they investigated were having a political connection. am not suggesting that is how adam used. he gotta provide more info. nevertheless, a secret police doing actual investigating is not surprising to us. am recalling a book that were made into a movie, the night of the generals. in the book (not sure abut the movie) there were simultaneous seeming investigations o' a murder being conducted by both the gestapo and the military police. quit it. is NOT secret service anymore than is secret santa or secret garden or secret squirrel. as illathid observes, scotland yard would not be labeled as a secret police. secret police is a single identifiable term... don't parse. is not police who sometimes work in secret. secret police has well-defined denotation and connotation. the two words together create something different than the sum of the parts... given the context of this thread, perhaps you might think of it as akin to a chemical rather than physical change. now, is it possible that the obsidian who wrote the update were as confused as you? yeah. is possible they used "secret police" as a mash-up o' secret + police. Gromnir is taking this stuff second-hand from people quoting, but given josh's education (history major) am doubting he would do something like this by accident. if he wrote update, you can be assured he did so with knowledge and almost certainly with intent. HA! Good Fun! ps am very hopeful we don't have to explain venn diagrams and how a particular secret service could act as a secret police.- 103 replies
