Well, he's welcome to buy a laptop, but it'll be outdated and dead-ended a lot sooner than a desktop will. Even when a new platform standard comes out you can usually salvage things like the optical drives, power supply, RAM, and case/fans when you have to replace everything else, the only thing you'd really be able to salvage is the HDD, as they've been the same shape for awhile now. I recommend making a poll on a techie forum, letting the results flow in, and showing him the poll and telling him that you're not the only person who thinks he'd be better off with a desktop. Failing that, recommend Acer or somesuch.

Well, if he's looking to have a laptop that won't be totally outdated he's looking at the wrong type of computer, depending on what he actually wants to do with it before it falls over. Laptops have very limited upgradeability, so you can expect to buy a new one fairly often, generally speaking.

I've modified my current one heavily. I put a new processor in it (pretty damn hard, what with how buried in it is), and added a stick of RAM. I figure I'm ready.

Why wouldn't we believe it? Splinter Cell has always been made at Ubisoft Montreal, and it's a lucrative franchise, three games in, that's made lots of money. Why wouldn't it stand to good reason that they're making a fourth one right now, especially on the eve of the launch of all the Next Gen consoles?

Anyhow, besides posting pro-IRA lyrics, what little I have to contribute to the discussion is basically this: Terrorism: A methodology for waging a war, often wielded by non-state sanctioned combatants, with not nearly enough money to fight using multi-million dollar machines of modern warfare. Terrorism's primary goal is to weaken the populace, and tangentially the economy and country, through fear. Terrorists have little to no concern for what collateral [civillian] damage they cause, and often times main objectives will include civillian targets. I'm not going to argue the right or wrongness of targetting civilians, as it's been done before, but that seems an adequate definition to me.
