  1. I haven't offered a definition, I have just given examples of games I think are RPGs. CoD is not among them, nor have I said anything that could reasonably lead one to believe that I would think so. Meanwhile, HuniePop (a dating sim) satisfies all criteria you have mentioned so far. It doesn't just have 'RPG elements', there is not one 'RPG element' that is present in Baldur's Gate but absent in HuniePop. It has level progression, it has branching dialog, it has meaningful choices, it has equipment, it has spells, it has tactical combat. Using your definition (uh, excuse me, "common sense") there is no group that includes BG but excludes HuniePop, which is patently absurd, as it is a bejeweled-like puzzle game/dating sim, and not an RPG.
  2. You know so little about hardcore PC gamers in general and hardcore RPG gamers on PC in particular. And same is true for PS4/console gamers... And the rpgcodex IS pretty much the core audience of Pillars. The rpgcodes pretty much only exists for such games. At the same time, 90%+ of all console gamers don't give a fu*k about an oldschool PC exclusive RPG. They don't even give a sh*t about indie games in general. No, you know very little about RPG gamers in general because you spend all your time in echo chambers like this forum and RPG codex talking to people who think just like you do about a very specific demographically minuscule subset of RPGs, ignoring all the rest. How do you know how I spend my time? Because those are the only places where the "An RPG is only an RPG if it has branching dialog" argument is offered in earnest. Everywhere else it's rightly ridiculed. What really makes this funny to me is that under your definition games like HuniePop are RPGs while games like Dark Souls aren't. I literally can't even.

  4. ITT the only people in the world who think Bloodborne and PoE target different audiences. Actually there might be some on rpgcodex too.
  5. It's not at all 'minimally' an RPG. It has all the same RPG features as Baldur's Gate except for branching dialog. Is a lion only minimally a cat because it's not a pet?
  6. I get the feeling you're gonna be disappointed with PoE. The only role you can play in Dark Souls is killing man. I won't be, because my conception of what an RPG can be is broad rather than narrow, which means I'm much harder to disappoint than someone who can only interpret things literally.
  7. ISnt that the best thing a developer could ask for. But man this march is just insane with so many great stuff coming out. It is probably even a pretty bad time to realse such a huge RPG. In the last 5 days: Final Fantasy Type Zero (FFXV demo) Life is Strange ep 2 Game of Thrones ep 3 Bloodborne Pillars of eternity. How can I play all this.... Erased the popamole console crap. The fact that you think Bloodborne is crap means you don't know and haven't played two of the greatest RPGs of all time, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2. If you like RPGs at all you should fix that right now.
  8. The legal definition of buying and selling should only be privileged over the common use definition of buying and selling in a legal context. As this is a forum post ("4 million in sales") we are not in a legal context and so you can reasonably be expected to be understood to not be using jargon when using everyday words. Of course, all of this could have been avoided if the original poster had simply omitted 'in sales', because kickstarter did generate 4 million.
  9. You can also legislate whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable, but that doesn't change the scientific fact of what a tomato is, just as legislating that what kickstarter does is not buying/selling but some other kind of legal construct doesn't change anything about how people who are not lawyers use the words buying and selling.
  10. Guaranteed all these twitchers and youtubers combined will never come close to generating 4 million in sales like us backers did. There were no sales. You didn't buy a product. You donated to a company and they rewarded you with a copy of their product; that's it. There was no buying/selling occurring. I bet that'll hold up in court. "I wasn't paying for sex, your honor, I donated money to her non-profit and she rewarded me with services rendered."
  11. Because streamers are not journalists. They're just dudes playing videogames for money, and because they're popular they get access to content before people who actually care about the content while all they care about are views. Please make sure to click subscribe and leave a comment!!! And is important that streamers have the game only 3 days before than we? This is nonsense. If they have the power of giving big publicity to PoE, that will be great for all of us. We want a succesfull game to enjoy it and a big publicity to increase sales in order to have more sequels. You can also take the other side of this argument, and say that it's nonsense that journalists and streamers having 3 days early access will determine whether PoE will be a success or a failure. If that were the case, no greenlit/early access game could ever be a success because reviewers and streamers didn't get their 3 Days Of Importance.

  13. This is an important part of the process. The majority of hype nowadays is generated by folks streaming games right before they are released. This is just the reality of the situation. You shouldn't view streamers in any different light than reviewers. They serve much of the same function - informing users of the game (and giving them a glimpse before they purchase) and generating hype for the release. They also work off of the same principles. In the same way that reviewers won't publish reviews on games if they don't get exclusive access, streamers won't stream new games if they don't have exclusive access. Obviously that isn't universal, but it is a good rule to follow. This isn't to denigrate the backers or what they mean to this project. We love you guys and what you do for this project more than you can know. But, this is the game that has to be played for us to be as successful as we can be. So why not open it up to the backers at the same time as these streamers? If the logic of allowing streamers early access is to generate hype, people who've already bought the game can't be the target demo for those streams because you already have their money. edit: Oh, piracy, of course. Whatever, this is still horrible.
  14. They look like Abe Sapien but with pupils. edit: Wait, no, I think that's the coastal Aumauas. The Islanders look like brown Abe Sapiens with pupils.
  15. Is there a way to influence how hard your spells are to save against? As far as I can tell it only seems to depend on level; there doesn't seem to be any other way of increasing spell accuracy. Am I right about that?
  16. During character creation (specifically, about 5 seconds after I switched my character model from elf to dwarf), a circle-shaped spray of coloured dots appeared and froze around the character model, the game stopped working, and I could no longer input any command (including ctrl+alt+del). No BSOD, just a complete freeze until I hard-reset my machine. As a result, there was no crash dump, nor a notification of a crash dump. Upon restarting my computer, windows would no longer boot, and instead would return a BSOD that referenced the display driver being corrupted and a problem with nvlddmkm.sys. Installing the latest drivers for my video card in safe mode didn't solve the issue, and I had to roll my system back to a checkpoint before the installation of PoE. When I then reinstalled PoE, the same thing happened again, before I even got to character creation. I have not reinstalled PoE a third time, and for the past half hour everything seems to be fine. Operating system: Windows Vista service pack 2 CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz RAM: 2 GB Video card: Geforce 8800 GTX
  17. Installing now, it's 6 gb. Obsidian made 18/8 with 3 minutes to spare. Pretty sweet.
  18. You'll find a key in your Products tab on your account page on the PoE site when they release it (2:00 PST). Insert key into Steam, download beta, enjoy. 2:00 AM or PM? 10:00 PM GMT+0 right? It's been delayed by an hour, so now it's 11pm in Britain, and 12pm in the Netherlands/Belgium/France/Germany.
  19. It is with a heavy heart that I accept your apologies, but you are hereby absolved from blame.
  20. First bug report: as my post is supposed to be first, yours clearly cannot be correct and must therefore be a bug in the system.
