Macbeth replied to jerf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
"#$#$ you, as long as I get mine". Divisive, selfish and ultimately self-defeating. I thought this crowd would have more solidarity considering the funding model, but nope! Many on these forums actively work against their fellow gamers interests, dividing themselves up into armed camps instead of supporting each other. Here is a great post satirizing this attitude, which hits the nail on the head: http://forums.obsidi...other-features/ All I can hope for is that the devs don't listen to the so-called 'fans' too much and translate the game into as many languages as possible. With the support of French, German and Spanish old-school gamers, maybe the next game will get even more funding. I learned English to play (and by playing) computer games. Go cry on a different grave. Good for you that you learned another language. Sad for you that it didn't make you a wiser man. -

They are an incentive, not a dependency, at least not as far as ‘core’ languages like German, Spanish and French are concerned. I’m almost 100% sure that even if Obsidian does not get a 2.2m backing, these localisations will still be realised. These will earn them a lot more money than they will cost them. -

The answer is no to all of them and do speak from experience. Any localisation that is done is based on sales projections. If these are favourable, localisation will go through provided there’s budget for it and the profit is deemed ‘worth it’ in the eyes of company management. As for loss of personnel hours: there is none except for the time put in by producers/localisation managers and this is an integral part of development anyway. Same goes for the programming of multiple language support. But the real big job, the translation itself; this is done by external companies. (Which goes to show once more that the equation of ‘more languages = less quests’ is completely nonsensical. The department of design has nothing to do whatsoever with the process of localisation.) -

I don’t think you need worry about it too much as yet. German, French and Spanish translations are a given, but I would be surprised if in the end Italian, Russian and even Oriental localisations will follow. Obsidian is an American company, yes, but the CRPG-market’s biggest base is still good old Europe. Like I said in the Update 8 thread: foregoing the German translation alone would be waving goodbye to a few hundreds of thousands of sales. 2.2m deadline or not, that localisation is going to happen! Italian, well, that may indeed depend on budget that is freed for localisation of the game in general. -

First off all, no one should ‘rather be ignorant’ for any reason. Second, you’re not going to miss a minute of gameplay because of extra localisations. Company finances don’t work that way. There are budgets for development, marketing, localisation etc. and one doesn’t necessarily influence the other. What will happen is that they’ll make Project Eternity and it will be huge in scope and by the end with deadlines looming they’ll have to cut certain regions/quests and so forth. This procedure is inherent to the nature of game development. Whether the end result is available in three languages or in thirty doesn’t change this at all. -
Great concept art! And about the localisation: the game will be translated whether they reach 2.2m or not, believe me. To not do so is commercial suicide – especially the German one. Still, I’m sure 2.2 will be reached; and more! I sincerely hope so.

Custom Portraits
Macbeth replied to Macbeth's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yes, that’s true, but if they do it, it must be done during development, hence my reason to post about it. -
So what do you guys and gals think about allowing players to make custom portraits? I’ve always thought this was a brilliant feature in Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale etc., because no matter how good the art, it just makes for a much more personal hero and party if you can give them the exact faces you want. I’d love to see the return of this feature in Project Eternity. (In the same vein, it was great to be able to change the appearance/colours of your heroes at any time instead of being ‘stuck’ with a cosmetic choice from the very beginning.)

Of course you get the correspondent backer identifier that comes with certain pledges, nothing changes there. It's just that Obsidian has been kind enough to provide custom titles on the forum here because of the Order initiative; this is a fantastic thank you, but has nothing to do with the Kickstarter tiers per se. The idea behind the Order is to add that extra bit of support to Project Eternity: a way of uniting our enthusiasm for the RPG to be! So feel free to join us, we welcome anyone willing to join the ranks!

I'll say!

Impressive, Starglider! If that isn't worth a dancing banana, what is?

A reference to the Order - say in a book or told by a storyteller in a tavern - would certainly be a nice touch, but it needn't necessarily go further than that as far as I'm concerned. Nevertheless I'm willing to support the idea of banding together and getting the Order in as a reward. Perhaps they could be a tough-as-nails enemy encounter, but that would require 5000$ ...

Wow, there were just a handful of us when the Order started on Friday and look at it now! Kudos to dlux for listing all members so carefully and to Farudan for (kick)starting it all!! And thanks to Obsidian for recognising the Order of course! Just changed my avatar to reflect my new title a little better! Let's hope there will be many more members to follow!
