- One thing I don't really like is a classless system. It simply galvanizes my love of classes. Seriously, my options so far have been to make a jack of all trades with stats spread so thin that they're useless, or something so focused on 1 skill that they're just a generic sword-guy with no flavour. + I really like companion-specific trees. I think they're really important to making the companions distinct. Very important. - Combat is so slow and awkward. Cooldowns suck. No feeling of resource management without stamina/health mechanic or limited spells. No flanking is also balls. In fact, the whole system, with its slow, janky combat, ability combos, 4-member party and cooldowns feels far too much like DA:O. I'm really struggling to enjoy it actually. It just makes me want to play PoE again...

Survey for the Future Part 2
Grimo88 replied to Sking's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I totally get why someone would want this - horse for courses - but what really bugged me was Torment was sold as a spiritual successor to Planescape and the Infinity Engine. It was in t he pitch. Then as soon as they were funded they were like 'Lol, it's turn-based! Not like Infinity at all!' I'm worried that PoE, which has built its brand upon the legacy of the Infinity Engine, doesn't do a 180 in the hopes of joining the ranks of the turned-based indie darlings that are seeing a revival now. That's their thing, they're good at it, but RtwP is PoE's thing. -
Survey for the Future Part 2
Grimo88 replied to Sking's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I really don't think this is fair. 'X' setting is backward/overused/tired is a superficial complaint. It is all down to the writing. Obsidian have proved in the past that they can take tired, stale, uninteresting settings like the Star Wars universe (don't get me wrong, I love SW, but in the end, it is the hero's journey formula in space) and write the **** out of it, deconstruct it, make it fresh. The BG games, for instance, have every right to be a tired, lame old setting, but the quality of the ideas and the writing elevate it above even so-called 'mature' settings like the DA universe. -

Survey for the Future Part 2
Grimo88 replied to Sking's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm always scared when these surveys come up that the anti-RtwP league will come of the woodwork and influence Obsidian to make Pillars turn-based. I realise that I am in the minority here but I loathe turn-based games outside of the tabletop. I'm still angry that I got suckered into backing Torment before they announced that it would be turn-based. Now I don't even want it. RtwP is very unique, and since Dragon Age have set about merrily murdering the genre, Obsidian are the only people producing games like these any more. -
Worst game balance ever
Grimo88 replied to TheDave's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
How about some RESPECT when talking to a company that has made this game through hard work, passion and dedication? People are more than willing to discuss difficulty on these forums, but you are being a little turd about it. -
Act 3 difficulty?
Grimo88 replied to Brimsurfer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I am in scaled Act 3 now, after completing WM completely (bar Longwatch Falls, saving for later) and Elmshore was still satisfyingly challenging, if not punishing without the right tactics. A certain... um... shall we say nosferatu figure is also very challenging. Will update, if you'd like, on some of the appease the gods quests and how they feel. This is always the problem with mid-game xpacs. I had the same conundrums with Durlag's, Watcher's Keep and Heart of Winter. When I come back from these adventures in the middle of the game I have no desire to seek out gear or experience in other quests, or its trivialised other content. I have in my playthrough, for instance, completely cut out levels 6-15 of Od Nua because the dungeons and encounters and loot of WM have simply overshadowed it. I also completely cut out Dyrford before heading to WM at level 7. It is really nice to have options, but I do hope they opt for a ToB-style post-game model in future. -
Too much text ......
Grimo88 replied to Brimsurfer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Really is a sign of the times when people find reading a chore. Come back in 50 or so years when society has inevitably collapsed back into feudalism and literacy is once again treated as a coveted, elite skill... But in all seriousness, my one quibble with the text-based stuff is that the descriptions used when the gods talk to you are so achingly beautiful I'd love to see them animated. -
Hi all Menaha has more health than anyone else in my party and she always dies first. She seems to die almost incidentally. I cannot for the life of me figure out why she hits the dirt before anyone else. I played through the entire game with a barb and she rocked. Menaha just plain sucks in my party and I can't figure out why. Should I put her in heavy armor? Thanks in advance

Hello Don't know if anyone else is experience this but sometimes when I load White March, any use of buttons on the keyboard is ignored (e.g. esc does not bring up the menu, space does not pause). Obviously, it is not my keyboard since I am typing this, and I have tested with other games just to be sure.

Patch 3.0 Video
Grimo88 replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The hype is real. Now for the dilemma: jump into WM2 with my high level party and finish the story with them, or start from scratch so that I can pick up the new NPC and play through the whole thing with all its fancy new features?! -
Abydon - Fighter - tempered in life's crucible to be as hard as iron Eothas - Priest - life and rebirth seems to be reflected in their ability to heal Skaen - Rogue - secret plots, rebellions and shadows... 'nuff said Wael - Mage - mages immerse themselves in cryptography and mystery Galawain - Ranger - Do I really need to explain? Woedica - Paladin - knightly oaths and convictions are her domain Rymrgand - Barbarian - his domain is chaos, entropy and the inevitability of death. Sounds like a description of Carnage to me! Berath - Cipher - Might be a stretch, but since his domain is the movement of souls, rather than oblivion, as Rymrgand's is, this reflects cipher's manipulation of the soul well Ondra - Druid - Okay, this one is a big stretch, and only because the others fit so well. It gels well with tidal or water-based abilities, such as Moonwell, but also her relentless personality reflects the relentlessness of natural phenomenon Magran - Monk - as a god of trials, their mortification of their own flesh is hugely Magranic (especially if you believe those crazies in the Durance school of thought). Hylea - Chanter - patron of song and invention. Fits well. Agree/disagree? Alternative ideas?

Perfect Setting for POE 2
Grimo88 replied to Grimo88's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'd love to see Readceras too, but since its a former Aedyran colony, won't it be too similar to the Dyrwood, and just more of the same, with a theocratic bent? -
Want to start by saying I love this xpac to bits. I'm still in awe that I'm getting a second part later in the year. However, I'm having a lot of trouble justifying playing this mid-game. Here's some reasoning: 1) it's unreasonable if you wanted to play through the whole crit path with the rogue and monk companions, as they are behind a huge difficulty/level spike. 2) If you do this around level 7, as you're supposed to, in Act 2, by Act 3 you have the best gear in the game. There is no reason to do Endless Paths, or many of the side quests available. 3) By the time you're back from the March, you've outleveled a great deal of content, or are overgeared, and the rest of the game is trivialised (I just stomped the Sky Dragon on hard first go, unrested, in about 3 moves, not because of my great prowess, but because almost all of my party had soulbound weaps, and not even fully upgraded). 4) The story is great, but completely jarring in the grand scheme of the overall narrative, and not very well tied in. In fact, after leaving the White March, I'm not enjoying the Dyrwood at all, as everything is trivialised. I feel like now I'm just killing time until I can tackle Cragholdt. What do you guys think? Do you have advice for how and when to play the WM content? Should I simply treat it as a high-level add on and go with my pre-endgame save 12th level party?

Perfect Setting for POE 2
Grimo88 replied to Grimo88's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Readceras would be awesome, but probably too similar to Dyrwood. I would really love to see a spin-off game ala Icewind Dale set in Rauatai. I feel like it might be a little too alien for a sequel just yet. But, like you, I'd be happy to set it anywhere, I love the setting. Ixamitl with all of its malcachoa-ingesting goodness would be amazing too -
Ok, I'll give this a crack: Gameplay-wise: - More re activity with party members, and the return of party politics. More from the companions in general. Anonen-style quests where you could change their disposition entirely. - More challenging AI and encounter diversity. - More soulbound weapons, but far more difficult to gain and less ludicrously powerful, but still highly coveted. - One big city, instead of two, but with more emphasis on creating a living, deep city ala Athkatla. More factions to join, more life in the streets, multiple dungeons, a connected underworld of sewers, more secrets. I wasn't very impressed by Defiance Bay - No mega-dungeon, just more dungeon diversity. I feel like Cad Nua was gimmicky, and the resources might have been better spent on multiple dungeons with their own style and stories. Lorewise - More info. on the aspects and names of the gods that aren't Aedyran, like Cirono is Berath for the Vailians. - Fight a god or their avatar! - More aumaua lore. They are so cool, but seem to be rare in the Dyrwood. - No backer NPCs, or if there are, strictly enforced lore parametres, and no goddamn godlikes. - A mountain dwarf NPC. Not enough dwarves! - More on wizards - how are they different to animancers? What is their place in society?

What do you guys think of a Vailian City state as the setting of POE? I think this is perfect for a few reasons: 1. It mirrors the shift from Sword Coast to Athkatla - rolling hills and forests to a Mediterranean mercantile city state. No need for two 'big cities' this time - just one massive city divided by scheming houses, condotierri, slavers and pirates, just like Athkatla! 2. Animancy is more advanced and more accepted there, which means Obsidian can go crazy with encounter diversity, world building, creatures and concepts. 3. No more Engwithan ruins = hopefully greater dungeon diversity. Man do I have Engwithan fatigue, as much as I love those cats. 4. An atypical fantasy setting, and arguably one of the first settings in a video game where coloured people are the majority. A win against a stagnant set of genre stereotypes and a win for diversity!
