  1. That is not really true, as diseases that have named after place are rarely named after place where they actually originated. Like Spanish flu originated from USA, but it is called Spanish flu because Spanish reported about it when other countries were busy to kill each other in WW1. West Nile fever/virus was discovered in Uganda which is source of Nile and most of thee Uganda including are where discovery was done is locates east side of White Nile. Zika fever/virus is named after Zika Forest in Uganda, even though it was first found on human in Nigeria, because it was first found from monkey in cage in Zika forest. Also Covid-19 (Corona virus disease 2019)/ SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2) was not named after place where first cases of it were identified, although as current official naming convention produced name that don't have easy vernacular nickname (like SARS or MERS or swine flu / bird flu) some people insist to call it names that don't actually help to identify it but with their political agenda. And lots of people really don't care what its name is and just call it corona, even though there is billion different corona strains, but people seem to still know which disease people are referring to.
  2. It is good to see that journalist are at fault on what is written in opinion piece by person who is not a journalist
  3. In Finland they opened our apocalypse vaults (security of supply storages), in order to ensure that hospitals will not run out of protective gear, as for reasons those vaults contain among other things millions of surgical masks and protectors, which were running out until someone remembered that we actually have more than enough stored for in case of bad day.
  4. Yeah governments don't have any other means to collect money than borrowing money until economy crashes
  5. I have lived through time when my country's economy crashed because of our national debt and people's individual debts rise too high and our government had to nuclear options to give any hope for recovery. I can say that those weren't fun times. In comparison 2000s global economic crises were minor inconveniences.
  6. that sound quite familiar strategy
  7. “The fact that we found that many B and T cell epitopes are highly conserved between SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 provides a great starting point for vaccine development,” Professor Sette said. “Vaccine strategies that specifically target these regions could generate immunity that’s not only cross-protective but also relatively resistant to ongoing virus evolution.” They are hoping that because they found so many similarities between the viruses that it means that it could be possible to develop vaccine that works generally against similar corona viruses and that constant evolution of said viruses will not make vaccine obsolete in couple years. Meaning that they have only working theory for such cure, nothing concrete. But if it works it could work as general vaccine against quite many corona viruses.
  8. There has been reports from Japan and China people getting testing positive again after recovered from the infection https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-japan/japanese-woman-confirmed-as-coronavirus-case-for-2nd-time-weeks-after-initial-recovery-idUSKCN20L0BI Although there isn't consensus if these case are actual reinfection or failures in tests. National Science Review says that more severe L strain mutated from original S strain, but it seems that human intervention has prevented L strain spreading as far as original S strain. Chinese study also suggest that it seems currently both strains are mutating towards direction where they cause less severe symptoms, but spread faster. It is possible that virus mutates fast considering that S strain jumped for first time from animal to human in end of November or start of December 2019 and month later more aggressive strain L, although it is typical that viruses evolve faster when they first jump from one species to another as they try to adapt new host type. But if we let virus spread freely to population in hopes to gain herd immunity against it it is more than likely that it will develop more strains as more host virus have it has more changes to pick up new material to evolve https://www.contagionlive.com/news/investigators-identify-2-circulating-sarscov2-strains https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/covid-19-2-strains-1.5487672 Previous work SARS-CoV vaccine is used as base for SARS-CoV-2 vaccine because both viruses use ACE2 enzyme to invade human cells, and they tried to find method that inactivates said enzyme (something that your own immune system doesn't do). But as there is no working vaccine for SARS-CoV, it is not necessary fruitful path for working vaccine for SARS-CoV-2. But that is not only research path, others are whole virus vaccine (which is the more traditional approach where person is infected by dead or inactive version of virus in order to let body build immunity against it), then is subuit vaccine which purpose is to make person immunity system sensible towards S-spike protein, which is protein that SARS-CoV-2 uses in its process to intrude ACE2 enzyme. And there are studies for RNA vaccine, which is artificially created RNA that produces similar proteins that mimic proteins from pathogen (in this case SARS-CoV-2 ), so that immunity system will antibodies against pathogen.
  9. Gaining herd immunity against Covid-19 through infecting people with it seems to effort that is doomed from start as there are multiple strains of it and person who has one strain can be infected by another, so in order to gain immunity against covid-19 trough infection person needs to be 2-4 times and even that does not necessary is enough as it seems that covid -19 can mutate quite easily. I would say that our only hope to get herd immunity is to develop vaccine which contains weakened versions of all the known strains.
  10. Not taking in consideration that you used that as hypothetical example that is not meant to be realistic comparison. It not skills of Chemical Engineer that are valuable but their knowledge. If you measure only value of skills then expert ornamental basket weaver wins chemical engineer every day . I think it would be better to make bit more every day choices that people picking their careers face, like for example comparing careers and salaries of Chemical Engineers and Registered Nurses, as both have high demand on job market and both careers demand high level knowledge and skill, but later one pays less and have less benefits but costs for the degree is about same (which may most likely be reason why quite lot hospitals and clinics are facing issues to find enough qualified nurses).
  11. I don't understand these big questions how presidential candidates plan to pay their plans to redistribute wealth in USA. As that should be quite plainly obvious, if candidates have any actual will to enact their promises. They will either tax people and share those taxes to people according to their plan and then they tax people again and again they will share those taxes to people according to their plan. Or use more popular option and take more debt which has been quite popular quite long time, because it illusion that government don't use people's money. Both options will kill economy if overdone. Although it is much easier to lower taxes and than pay back debt that you can't afford.
  12. Those, plus India's actions in Kashmir, https://www.hrw.org/sites/default/files/reports/INDIA935.PDF https://2009-2017.state.gov/j/drl/rls/hrrpt/2010/sca/154480.htm https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/For-the-first-time-securitymen-kill-more-civilians-than-terrorists-in-JK/articleshow/6508298.cms?referral=PM https://www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/INDIA-2018.pdf https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/01/17/india-failing-kashmiri-human-rights And how nice India's current prime minister has been in past https://www.internationalaffairs.org.au/modi-us-relations-on-track-but-frosty/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/06/06/from-pariah-to-capitol-hill-narendra-modis-extraordinary-rise/ https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/aatish-taseer-modi-oci-time-magazine-article-father-pakistan-india-a9194771.html And India's nice informal justice system that is still in power in many parts https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/24/india-village-gang-rape-violence-poverty-illiteracy-west-bengal And other things
  13. So cost of personal freedoms and deaths of millions is good in India, but bad in China?
  14. 1. That don't seem to work very well. Like for example USA's unemployment rate is much lower than Finland's and there are more fast food restaurants per capita but median salary of Finnish fast food worker is almost 30% higher than in USA. 2. Then on IT sector Finland has more software engineer positions per capita than USA and almost every company is need of competent programmers and yet programmers median salary is almost 10% higher Main contributing reason for 1. point is Finland's higher social benefits, which forces companies pay higher salaries for unskilled labor. Main contributing factor for second is cost of living in cities that held most of the software engineers, which leads software engineers asks lower salaries. As government also can use those taxes regulations to they collect and impose to skew economy in different directions, like paying "high" welfare in order to prevent people needing to work jobs that don't pay living wages and cutting cost of living by regulating cost of apartments, supporting people buying their own homes, with tax breaks and partial loan securities. Using those taxes to keep cost of education and health care low even for people in high end of middle class.
  15. Soviet Union had 100% employment rate, its economy was also "booming" until it collapsed (meaning Soviet Union)
  16. Is economy booming when budget runs trillion dollars in deficit per year. You can buy lots of things with loaned money, but that doesn't mean that you are economically speaking in good place.
  17. Greta is brilliant business woman, at age 16 she is world famous millionaire just by telling that people should read IPCC's reports and studies.
  18. It is good that you applaud for USSR invading it neighbouring countries without provocation and killing hundreds of thousands people. It is just so sad that USSR had to invade for example Finland in order to ensure that their initial bad hand don't cause them too much problems
  19. I find it bit funny how much more people bring up how Hunter Biden got high paying job in private company, without any other clear merit but, his father being vice president of US, considering current president's daughter and son of law work as high paying advisers in White House without any merit that show that they are qualified to work in such position.
  20. Like South Korea and Japan aren't North Korea's neighbors
  21. Second there is confirmation they're close it is too late. We need only to look cases of North Korea, Pakistan and India to see how fast the final mile in nuclear weapon development is. It is why there has been efforts to stop Iran's uranium enrichment programs. But currently Iran is enriching uranium faster than never before. Current prediction is that they will have nuclear weapons in 2021 if they want them. So now is time to invade if you want to stop their nuclear weapon program.
  22. Accidental downing of flight 752 reminded all sides of consequences of cold war where one side has already is backed to corner and paranoia and they still own air defence which range covers big sunk of Middle East. Meaning that Iran that constantly fears attacks from USA will shot more passenger planes all around Middle East regardless do they intend to do so or not. Also this situation gives Iran opportunity to continue their nuclear program with speed that they have in past avoided in fear of consequences, now they already face those consequences regardless. So as Trump strated his fight with Iran because of he hated Obama's nuclear deal, current situation in that light is lose for Trump and efforts to prevent Iran develop nuclear weapons. So overall it has been lose for everyone, except for those who want to see nuclear apocalypse.
  23. He was head of Iran's secret service / CIA / military intelligence who only answered Iran's supreme leader. So he was one of the Iranians who actually had power to negotiate any sort cease fires and other forms of de-escalation.
  24. According to Iraq's prime minister Suleimani was in Iraq because he was delivering Iran's response to Saudi Arabia as part of mediation efforts by Iraq. And Iraq started mediation in direct request from Donald Trump. So it seems that USA orchestrated trap for Suleimani in disguise of peace/de-escalation talks. I am sure that this will make peace talks in Middle East so much easier, especially if USA is involved
