  1. i meant that the base game was going to be that long, not the expansion. was basically saying that they aren't cutting things out of the base game to put them in the expansion so we wouldn't get a full game experience. we're definitely getting that.
  2. @ nikita that's not going to be the release price of wasteland 2, i'd bet you anything. just like 20 or 25 isn't going to be the release price of this game. they're giving it to you a discount to fund the game. also, you're backing, not buying, the project.
  3. they're actually funding it themselves, per feargus comments. and then they'll use the PE profits to help with it. The game is tentatively slated for a 2014 release. Given the fact that they're licensing a ready-made engine, that allows for more than a year of dev time without many worries about technology (I doubt they're aiming for a January 1st release date.) feargus said they were aiming at the old school length, think 60+ hours.
  4. direct quote from feargus about the expansion funding. @Bootsy 81 We are going to fund it ourselves and from the sales we get from project eternity when it comes available- not from the Kickstater funds. I don't think we will do a Kickstater just for it, I'd rather see about funding the sequel that way - if you guys will still have us. also seems like a decent place to post this: expansion packs are always thought about at this point in development i'd imagine. because the amount of ideas and such they have for games are so many that they just won't fit within time or budget constraints. however they are in no way going to be holding back anything they've promised, and they are going to be doing as much as they can. and it will be a whole/complete/long (think the old games length as what they're aiming for, or if you want a number 60+ hours (from a feargus comment a few days ago)) game. the expansion will not be worked on at all until after the game itself is complete (also from feargus), and they are funding the expansion themselves so no kickstarter funds are going to it at all (also from feargus). they're just saying that they are going to continue working in this world regardless of if it sells well immediately, as they have to by making this promise. all of that is from things in the comments, most of it from days ago. if need be i can get feargus to come in and post about this, or to give me a direct quote i can copy/paste (he offered this in the comments). so most of the concerns about this are really kinda founded on not having all of the information. really, we're getting what we want out of this. MORE of what we want, what with them funding the expansion out of their own pocket without a publisher and basically hoping that the game sells beyond the backers. it shows that they are serious about this being a continuing world. this is a good thing. sorry i didn't get this in here sooner.
  5. i'm pretty sure they're talking about something more substantial than that actually. if i'm remembering right, feargus mentioned 20ish hours for an expansion was what they'd like, or something like that. don't hold me to that, but i do know they want a substantial expansion, more along the lines of MOTB than something smaller.
  6. anyone wanting a direct quote about where the funding for the expansion is coming from (from the kickstarter comments): @Bootsy 81 We are going to fund it ourselves and from the sales we get from project eternity when it comes available- not from the Kickstater funds. I don't think we will do a Kickstater just for it, I'd rather see about funding the sequel that way - if you guys will still have us. EDIT making it easier to read.
  7. anyone wanting a direct quote about money for the expansion, here you go: @Bootsy 81 We are going to fund it ourselves and from the sales we get from project eternity when it comes available- not from the Kickstater funds. I don't think we will do a Kickstater just for it, I'd rather see about funding the sequel that way - if you guys will still have us.
  8. That's how a debate works, and it'd be better to say even if we didn't make profits we'll still fund this. Oh, it's fine to raise a second objection, but you'd need to accept that your first objection was not sound, not argue that nobody has been able to refute your objections. Regarding your second objection, well, it's obviously nonsensical to say that they'll make an expansion even if they didn't turn a profit. Because that would imply they would either 'save' their KS $ for it, which is way more problematic, or that they will act in a financially reckless manner (by promising a product that wouldn't begin production until 2 years down the line). Should they not have promised an expansion pack at all, because it is a tricky thing? That is the one objection I would tentatively agree to. I want to see them fundraise as much as possible, but I don't want them to tie themselves down with too complicated promises. Free copy of W2? Fine. Expansion pack? Not sure - I don't see a huge problem given that an expansion pack could easily be produced for half a million or less (given the original P:E budget), though. Edit: Oh, and all the "u r troll" really doesn't help anyone, guys. Nobody's gonna say "You're right, I AM a troll! OH GOD" and expire in a puff of repentant smoke. Thank you Tigranes, and in the future I will explicitly state that I conceded a point. My concern comes from two places: A) As people have been stating, current business practices in a similar vein to this bother me even if I feel like the devs will try to make a true expansion (it's hard to shake that feeling). B) Profits are still part of the equation for funding the expansion. The KS model has not been tested as far as profitability in a game like this. In the event that the available fan base is not much larger than those that would initially back this game, will obsidian be able to self-fund the expansion? i actually posted something that answers where the money is coming from for the expansion up there *points*. but the short of it is this: feargus specifically said in the kickstarter comments that obsidian was going to fund the expansion themselves.
  9. i'm pretty sure that they're hoping that PE makes enough that they won't need a kickstarter, at least that's what i've gathered from several things feargus has said. he's also said that they definitely want to make a second one as long as we'll have them, so they really do want a franchise of their own to play with. an expansion is really just the first step in that direction.
  10. These have been answered. The Kickstarter funds goes to the base game. When the expansion is released, you buy the expansion. Only a very small amount of people will get the expansion for free for pledging a high amount of money to the base game as a thank you. Sorry. I saw the Feargus posts, I just didn't quite get it. I'm realizing more and more that I have no idea how the game industry is run. Thanks for looking into it, Madzookeeper and thank you for being patient with me. I believe I had a bit of a panic there. no worries. you've been a lot more reasonable than more than a few reactions i've seen today. and you're welcome for looking into that.
  11. when talking about possible stretch goals a few days ago, feargus said that they'd had a few ideas that they knew they just couldn't do, or would require the kind of stretch goal that they just couldn't reach. pipe dreams, if you will. my money is that one, or a few of those, are what they're planning on doing the expansion with. and sense they'll already have most of the art/scripting/etc done, they know it's going to be mainly writing that is going to take to get this done. and considering that they've done more than a few expansion packs (i can think of at least four), they have a pretty decent idea of how long it'll take to get it done before hand, especially if they know the scope and so forth of wha they're doing already. could it be delayed? sure. could there be problems? yep. but they know enough to know how to do this.
  12. figured this was probably a really good place to put this... expansion packs are always thought about at this point in development i'd imagine. because the amount of ideas and such they have for games are so many that they just won't fit within time or budget constraints. however they are in no way going to be holding back anything they've promised, and they are going to be doing as much as they can. and it will be a whole/complete/long (think the old games length as what they're aiming for, or if you want a number 60+ hours (from a feargus comment a few days ago)) game. the expansion will not be worked on at all until after the game itself is complete (also from feargus), and they are funding the expansion themselves so no kickstarter funds are going to it at all (also from feargus). they're just saying that they are going to continue working in this world regardless of if it sells well immediately, as they have to by making this promise. all of that is from things in the comments, most of it from days ago. if need be i can get feargus to come in and post about this, or to give me a direct quote i can copy/paste (he offered this in the comments). so most of the concerns about this are really kinda founded on not having all of the information. really, we're getting what we want out of this. 14. another useful bit of info that the feargusaurus rex just posted in the comments: Creator Obsidian Entertainment less than a minute ago @Hiro We had thought people would prefer that. So, we are going to have the option of turning off any connectivity. We like the idea of being able to deliver info and updates to the game - but we know that a lot of people feel that is intrusive. so basically we'll have an optional news page that we can use. which is really cool.

  16. Trister - Obsidian Order Master Wetboy 4 minutes ago @ feargus ah, so very, very close! hopefully within the next couple of hours. certainly before the end of the night. i have two questions for you from the forums. 1. how will the physical version of the game be patched? will there be an auto-patcher, or updater like with NWN2? or will it be something that we'll have to check for at times? 2. what happened to the second digital copy of the game at the 250 and 500 tier levels? did it get changed into the expansion? Creator Obsidian Entertainment 2 minutes ago @Tristen (1) That is a good question. If you are not using Steam, it will most likely need to be a download. We have been talking about updating the front page of the game with news, but we know some people don't want their game connected to the internets at all. (2) I need to look into that, tbh - I'm not sure which was the mistake right now. Adding them or removing them. Sorry. So they are looking at those two things. and it you will be able to get patches for non-steam versions of the game.
  17. I'm looking at my Witcher 2 entry and there's no patch file listed, just the 10 part game download (which is the new Enhanced Edition) and extras with nary a patch to be seen. Would make sense for games where the dev/publisher has gone the way of the dodo I guess. Fake edit: I see that same games, e.g. Dungeon Keeper 2, do have 'fixes' - but thinking that may be because it's a compatibility patch created by GoG as opposed to a developer-provided one. possibly, but i did get an FTL update and that game is really new. so... dunno. maybe it's something they're just starting to do?
  18. actually, humanoid, they do. it's not automatic, but they do have them available if anything new is added. it's an additional executable. i've had a few games get updated recently.
  19. Maybe not intentionally, but users of the Steam version will presumably get patches through the Steam client, and users of the GoG version from their GoG.com account page, so in order for users of the boxed version to get them, Obsidian would have to set up a PE download area on its own website or something. So it's not about them arbitrarily excluding some users, it's something that would require them to spend additional work/money. or they could, you know, have an automatic updater or an updater that you can use like in NWN2. seems like that would make the most sense.
  20. No, your're right, this is what the $500 tier looked like before the update. Same for the $250 tier. Looking at the actual text descriptions that x2 might have been there by mistake though. Shame, as that would have been the tipping point for me to upgrade my pledge to $250+$30. It gets even more confusing as the physical reward tiers start with "previous reward tier +" even though for many of them the next-lower reward tier is now a digital one that includes two digital copies. On that note, what will I lose if I give away the single digital copy from a physical reward tier besides convenience? Will patches be available for the boxed copy? Will the boxed copy support all three operating systems? Edit: This can be verified by going to the google cache of the old kickstarter page, but only if the images are still in your browser's cache. i don't see why patches and such wouldn't be available for a physical copy of the game. why in the world would they change that? i'm also fairly sure the physical version will be usable on all of the operating systems, but there's no actual confirmation. i'll see about asking feargus next time i see him. about that and the change of not getting 2x digital copies at those tiers like you did before.
