Save Features or Just Checkpoints...
Slowtrain replied to Raithe's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I recall Matthew saying that the checkpoints were pretty generous and well placed. So it should be pretty easy to revert to a previous checkpoint if you wish without losing much playtime. -
Look at it this though: many games have soem sort of feedback indicator to help ther player gauge the successfulness of their attacks. In FO1 and 2 , you had the pip boy screen which would give you info like target hit for no damage etc. Video game combat is usually an abstraction of real world combat and as such real world "rules" don't apply. So games need to give some sort of indicator on how the player character is doing with their attacks while under that particular game's system of abstraction.

Josh, Does the DT remain constant even as the armor suffers damage? Or does the DT decline similar to the DR as the armor loses HP? Also, please, maybe just a hint if you guys have changed the repair system into something less odious. Please?
-
Sounds good. It's fiddly. I like fiddly. Surprisingly perhaps, the red shield doesn't bother me. It's a feedback device that helps with the abstraction of the combat. Not a problem.

Combat was pretty decent in WItcher 1 in OTS mode. I got pretty good at doing flips and spins and stuff and could take on quite a few enemies at once without being hit much. Still, a bit more tactical thought and variety would be welcome.

Pessimist? Maybe. Once upon a time I was bright eyed and bushy-tailed and full of hope and eternal something. But then Invisible War, and that was that.

lol. I never thought of it that way, but yeah. I look in the mirror and see Hurlshot, except backwards.

Fallout 2 was the worst. Weird how the developers of Fallout 2 took a fringe element of Fallout 1 and made it so dominant. Not so weird that Bethsoft would do the same. Originality has never been Bethie's strong suit.

hmmm. Is it really possible to up the camp factor from a game that had a softdrink that "made you pee glow" and a gun that fired teddy bears? Apparently so.

Is there a functional difference from using the iron sights in NV vs aiming (but with no iron sights) in FO3. Or is it simply a cosmetic change?
-
XCOM has no canon. It has autocannons though.

^That one is much more accurate. Nice pic btw, G1.

Yeah, totally. This chart is much more knowledgeable about Europe than most Americans are about their own country.

It's a solid developer tackling a classic IP, I'm not sure why it shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt. I'll save my skepticism for Jagged Alliance 3. All games sound great when first announced. Very few great games are ever released. Where does all the greatness go? Perhaps the same place as all my vanished socks.

I see the hype machine is all ready sucking people headfirst into its gaping maw.

Nice fault sillogism here. Still, I mostly agree with you about dull and boring games (I used to like action games before regen health) so I don't want to start a discussion. lol. Yeah, that really didn't come out right, did it. Well, I could say quick-time events (IIrc qte's are in, I believe), Geralt's face v2.0, and the change to the flashbacks. But that's not enough to say, omg the game is going to hell, quite yet. Still, I'm neeeervous.

I certainly agree that LIKING a game comes down to taste, but saying it's a GOOD game? That's not so cut and dried. Example: (WHich I've used before on this forum) I love Godzilla vs The Smog Monster. Love. I've rented it many times and watch it whenever it comes on. I would prefer to watch it over many other movies, such as The Godfather or 2001 or The Seven Samurai. But, since I love it can I say it's the Greatest Movie Ever? Or even a good movie? No, of course not. What I can say is I like a crappy movie. For whatever reason. Oblivion is a crappy game. People may like it, which is cool, but it's still a crappy game. It tries harder at some things that other games of its sort do, I agree, and that probably desrves some credit. But the fps/rpg gameplay is very poorly done. edit: What were you angry about mkreku? I can't see anything in the last few posts that would inspire anger.

How exactly? How what? How is The WItcher becoming more mainstream? Or how have video games become dull and predictable? Or how are video games dull and predicatble? I'll answer all three. FRo convenience. 1) Don't know yet. And I hope it isn't. There's a smell in the air though. 2) Money 3) I used to buy 20-30 games a year. I've bought one game in the last 2. If they weren't dull and predictable, I'd stioll be buying them.

Oblivion had a rack of 95's. Back, front and all over. Greatest crpg ever. And so forth. hmm. Oh, right. Also Bioshock.
-
Like most games, The Witcher is apparently moving more mainstream and inevitably becoming less interesting. It's weird how if I were first coming to video games now, I wouldn't even be remotely interested because they are for the most part so dull and predictable.

I don't disagree that FO has had its share of silly stuff from the beginning. And that's fine. Most fantasy world-building takes lots of liberites with what might be plausible within the context that it postulates. But an author can only push so far before the fabric of illusion can't stand the strain and begins to tear. If you have Colonial Marines fighting aliens, within that context a lot of liberties can be taken and the plausibility maintained. But if you have some guy in a cape suddenly swoop down from the sky and start punching out the aliens with firsts of steel, then you've blown your context all to hell and no one is going to even try to buy into the illusion. Unless you've got a damn good explanation that makes it plausible within the context. I give video games considerably more leeway in this sort of things than I give movies or books, but even still there's a certain limit to how ridiulous something can get before I'm not interested anymore.
-
So your take is that Fallout all ready has a boatload of ridiculous stuff so who cares if they add more? My take is that Fallout all ready has enough ridiculous stuff, let's not make it any worse.
-
I'm buying it. Regardless. Interesting that Obs is making the only 2 games that I plan to buy in the near future. This and AP. Which I guess is a credit to them.
-
Yeah, well I look a lot better with my makeup on.

Fallout 3 had a lot of "unnamed quests" though. Granted most of them were "collect sugar bombs" or "collect junk pieces" or "collect laser rifles" or "collect blood packs" or "collect teddy bears" or "collect power armor" or "collect nuka colas" (well, that one was a named quest) or "collect..." Am I the only one in awe of Bethesda's brilliance here? This is like the rpg at its finest. Plus a lot of **** blows up.
