  1. heh, doesn't that kind of kill the role playing? I'm not against it, but it would seem like those anal guys around wouldn't like this. Yes, some of the "anal" guys around would certainly diss the idea, because they somehow think role-playing is only possible with a blank-slate character. I do not share their views. However, my idea is no more imposing on the protagonist than the idea that he starts out as a Republic soldier in KotOR. Instead, he simply starts off working for the Sith and has an option to turn to the Light Side during the game. Yes, this idea is more theoretical and aimed at future games than it is at KotOR2. i really like the redemption idea. but lets face it. 90% of gamers are incredibly brainless and have no roleplaying skills. they want blank characters, not complex characters with past backgrounds. and this is the major complaint about planescape torment. whats hypocritical about these foolish people is that they say they want to roleplay their character, but in the end the character they play and create is just another stereotyped fantasy build such as the mysterious dual wielding elven ranger etc.
  2. the rpg theyre making is primaly for the console. and i dont think it will have extensive roleplaying options.
  3. Ugh, that was the worst economics explanation I've ever heard. The most basic idea in economics is that the lower demand the LOWER the cost and vice versa. If less people were willing to buy cars, then car dealerships would have to lower their prices in order to sell the same volume. You contradict yourself with your next line because you then correctly say that decreasing costs will result more buyers. However, volume by itself has no bearing on the pricing decision. The decision to raise and lower prices to maximize revenue has to do the price elasticity of the product. If the product is readily substitutable and becomes more price elastic (market is more sensitive to changes in price), then the producer should generally lower the price in order to maximize revenue. If the product becomes less price elastic, then the producer should then raise the price. Now if you gave evidence for why you might feel those markets (car dealerships, RIAA, and game publishers) are all highly price elastic, your arguments might have made sense. Thankfully someone here has a decent understanding of microeconomics! In the game industry, supply is fairly elastic. Once a game has been created, the marginal cost of producing additional units is relatively low. That's why the price of a game may come down relatively quickly if demand for that title is low. If western gaming companies charge high prices in Asia, it's likely that demand there for western games is fairly price inelastic. They probably oberserved that lowering the price did not yield a sufficient increase in volume to come out ahead. If they can sell 10 copies for $50 each or 12 for $25 each, they should obviously price the game at $50. That may be because pirates, who don't have the same production costs to cover, will always be able to offer the product for less, taking most of the volume gains that a price reduction by the company would bring. Faced with asymptotic demand like that, it makes the most sense for the companies to simply charge as much as they can for those who, for whatever reason, wish to have a genuine copy of the game. If the data suggested that they would make more money by reducing the price of games in Asia, believe me, it wouldn't take them long to do it. normally its demand that changes depending on cost, not cost that changes based on demand. regarding asian markets they are HUGELY price sensitive. if you increase the price of a product 10 percent you can get 50 percent less buyers because theres so much competition etc. i cant afford to pay 3000 pesos here for a game, but when i went to india, i found out pc games there were only 1000 rupees(almost the same as the peso at the time). i ended up buying 5 games there while i normally dont buy originals! so decreases in price can cause massive demand increases.
  4. So was this. And this post as well for all intents and purposes. TripleRRR dont forget this one also.
  5. since its confidential i asume that theres more then one then.
  6. why? what was split from the thread? can we have a link to the parts that were removed?
  7. dont forget new reno in fallout 2!!! the guy has proven himself time and again and hes a kick ass designer. id like him to work on somethign which allows him to have a lot of creativity, and not work on dnd where his creativity would be limited a lot.
  8. i dont care about obsidians current project, i want to know about their future plans.
  9. this is sacriledge! dont insult the prohet who brought us the holy planescape torment.
  10. You can have cut scenes within the game's own engine. I thought KOTOR did this actually. im not sure what you mean since i havent played kotor. but if youre talking about scenes like the ones in gta3 where they are in engine and not as movies, then thats what im talking about. with engines that can do that then theres no need for movies anymore. Yes, I beleive that's what KOTOR does. "Cutscenes" using the game's engine. However, many of us don't like cutscenes even if they are in engine because they break the action and the game's feel. so what alternative way of furthering the story can you suggest? btw, cutscenes can also further the mood and involvement of the game if done right. The story is furthered by the actions of the player. No cutscenes needed. what about furthering the story through the actions of others using cutscenes? and whatabout showing the results of the acitons of the player in cutscenes?
  11. i dont give a damn..... im just waiting for obsidians next project. the only rpoblem with this is that this board might be flooded with brainless console gamers.
  12. i want the obsidian guys to interract more too!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. the ideal game is planescape torment. period.
  14. Ok, just to defend myself, the text wasn't white when I posted this, more like grey... have they changed it recently or have I've gone insane.. the current one works nice enough for me to be happy. and thankts for making my thread into a big one, albeit off-topic... it always looked white to me, maybe it was your monitor settings or something.
  15. the worst thing about a kensai was that it was one of the things which made bg2 a s***ty rpg. how the hell did this guy who was in candlekeep forever which is basically a medieval european setting turn into a japanese overnight? it completely crazy and idiotic. anyone who roleplayed a kensai in bg2 was probably out of his/her mind.

  18. regarding luxury items, why should only a select few be allowed to enjoy themselves and have luxury? whats wrong if a poro asian fellow wants to have a bit of luxury himself?????
