more sense from the senseless. hades, i'm afraid i need to recategorize you. yay NWN2, btw. taks

that should read "plus any vector v that is an element of N(U)" not "plus any vector v that is an element of U." taks

i believe there are probably too many identifiable biases to truly trust the numbers, but to what extent it is impossible to tell (remember, the 95% interval was over 400k anyway). as hades stated, the TRUE number is probably more than the reported body count. that's simply because the body count does not add indirect deaths, which this study is purporting to cover. as for an actual number, i cannot say as there simply isn't enough information. got an 84% on the in-class portion (avg was 72% with 94% the high) and finished the take-home portion only to discover that the hardest question on that was actually proved elsewhere in our book, in a section we aren't covering (i did not peek because i did not know). as a result, the question was sort of "rephrased" into a two-parter that was similar, but different enough to require more work (part a of the rephrased question is actually sort of shown in the first anyway). this is now due on tuesday. as an example of "what kind of linear algebra" this class is, the original third question on the takehome is: Given two linear transformations U, T: V --> V, where V is a vector space, N(T) and N(U) are both finite dimensional (V is not necessarily finite dimensional!), and T is onto, prove that dim(N(UT)) = dim(N(T)) + dim(N(U)). some background... a linear transformation from one vector space to another is simply a linear combination of vectors in the one space to create a vector in the new space. N(T) is the null-space of T, N(U) is the null-space of U. A null-space for a linear transformation is the collection of all vectors, v, elements of V, such that T(v) = 0. the dimension of N(T) is referred to as the nullity of T. the null-space of the combined transform, then, would be first v such that T(v) is an element of N(U), plus any vector v that is an element of U (note that UT(v) is accomplished by first transforming with T to a new vector, then with U). onto means that for any vector v in V, there is a corresponding element w (in V in this case) such that T(w) = v. i.e. every element in the space you are transforming to, is a linear combination of elements you are transforming from. if T were also one-to-one, that would mean that the transformation is unique, i.e. there is only one transformation from the starting space that will result in a vector in the ending space. mathematically if T(w2) = v and T(w1) = v, then w1 = w2 if a transformation is one-to-one. one-to-one and onto together imply that dim(N(T)) = 0, btw. that V is not necessarily finite dimensional makes this difficult. taks

exactly what darque said. when those that are in power are paying the bills, hades, it does not matter whether they are **** or not. it's their company, and they have a right to set the rules. remember, people don't have a right to work for someone. taks

there's a good idea. vote democrat (or republican for that matter) simply because you're "mad at the other side." why not vote for the best guy, regardless of affiliation? i must say it is disappointing that the "best guy" was actually the lesser of two evils in both of the last two elections. in the end, it doesn't matter what party a candidate represents. people that strive to lead the country (at just about any elected level), are the types normal folks normally would not care to associate with. it takes a certain personality to do these things, one i'm not particularly comfortable with. taks -
it's probably named after some redneck town, however. taks

yes, there is. IDE drives will be lucky to hit 30 or 40 MB/s, whereas SATA can reliably hit 75 MB/s or so. you are correct that _most_ people won't notice a difference, but games like these spend a lot of time loading and unloading large textures. SATA drives also tend to have larger buffers and lower latencies. in general, this is probably true. taks

we need one of those cool  emoticons. missy had one at her site... taks

hmm... not one "drool" yet. sooooo... drooool. taks

i finished the game last night. pretty cool. the ending wasn't as hard as i had hoped, but i was playing on normal and the bad guy DID in fact, kill me once. i respawned and i think he got stuck or something and his protections were down. so, the main baddy wasn't weak, i just had an accidental "cheat" of sorts. i'm replaying now with a fighter type, and a true neutral alignment hoping to pick up some of the other quests. i'm also hoping i'll get different henchies as i'm no fan of the goody-goody paladin types (any, not just the one in this game). but, i picked neutral good last time and that's probably why my options for a tank were limited to him. dunno. oh, and there was one main quest i did not do, and it was directly related to the main plot, but not required. i need to resolve that as well to see what i come up with... taks PS: probably 15-20 hours, more if i did the stuff i missed.

exaaaaactly. well said. w.r.t. the first point, btw... the woman on the airline is probably just hopping on the "persecution" bandwagon that seems to be so popular today. everybody wants to make a federal (er, global) case out of minutae because in the world of "politically correct," they can. taks

what would be scary if your other side was, well, a she, and you were missing your "better half." taks

yes, i did. no matter how you slice it, ANY form of suppression is oppression. telling someone they cannot wear a cross because it may offend someone else is NOT freedom. in the end, you still said that you think ALL religious displays should be suppressed except in "certain cases" so to speak. telling someone they cannot wear a cross in a work environment because that is not the public image they want displayed, however, is another story. a company, being a private entity and all, has a right to project the image they desire. taks

you're waiting for... you? is this one of those split personality things where your "other side" is on vacation and you're waiting for him to get home? taks

there are also issues with the way your game is partitioned vs. the OS. i.e. i've had problems in the past related to having winders on a separate drive than my game installs. taks
-
yeah, and do you have SATA? i was having massive issues with even NWN not too long ago and it was the result of my HD hitting the bricks. moving to SATA cleared that up. of course, i'm back to stuttering with WCoC, which also showed up with daggerford, which is leading me to concluding the 1.68 update did _something_ to mess with performance. taks
-
then game, game, game like the wind! personally, i'm waiting on... 1. finalizing my dissertation topic. this is probably harder than the research itself. 2. NWN2 3. reports that Gothic 3 is actually playable without that $10k pooter that tomshardware just gave away 4. 6 p.m. so i can go home. taks

oh, by "this is the definition of oppression" i mean astro's statement. if BA wants to limit jewelry, all jewelry, there's no oppression there. if a school thinks a muslim woman should teach without a veil, then i think she should comply as well. her duty is to the children she's teaching. taks
-
so much for the concept of freedom, eh? you're "free" to believe as you wish, but you must, for the sake of everyone else, not do it openly. sorry man, but that's the antithesis of "freedom of religion." this is the definition of oppression. taks

your a joke hildegard. the "because of the oil" myth has widely been debunked. the $300B did not go to bush or his friends. moron. since when have you ever voted republican anyway, hades? taks -
it's better than doing a statistical extrapolation. at the very least, a body count represents the absolute minimum, whereas a statistical count provides a range, that has uncertainty. and it's also highly likely there aren't nearly as many of those. hehe. this is silly. again, exactly how do you know they draw "somewhat closer?" you have no basis for that number, either. taks

i'm sure you can have both... i was speaking more in general terms that typical mage types are not exactly the folks you want as mouthpieces. sort of like having a nerd band-leader. it just doesn't make sense... strictly an opinion only, of course. generally speaking, my mages have average to below-average cha, average str and con with above average dex (12 to 14). sometimes i trade wisdom for dex, however, depending on my mood (wise old sage vs. nimble genius i suppose). i have a similar proble, gromnir. someone got all mad at me once because i fail to use caps at the beginning of each line AND, in the same post, criticized me for signing every post. apparently, w.r.t. the latter, the fact that my name is attached to each post anyway is sufficient (in said codexian's mind) and that anything extra, was in poor form. ah, well, such is life. taks

that's exactly what i mean by sample bias, di. taks
