I'd argue that this thread is as good place as any to post those, even if not everyone will like the more improbable designs (then again, some historical examples fall under that category as well!). So, if you ask me, feel free to post anything you like This topic has evolved quite a bit from its earlier iterations anyway - now it's simply a place to post any designs we find interesting (in the hope that some of them will find their way into PoE!).

You'll find that many people will disagree with you whether the example you've posted is visually interesting. Not necessarily because it's impractical, mind you. Some people simply prefer more elegant, understated designs. Then we're in full agreement - I also prefer fantasy armour that looks good It's just that we have different defintions of "good". There's really no quarrel here (and you're not starting a war); 'tis simply a matter of taste.

I think we'll see flails in the game - I remember that they've been featured in one of the earlier updates. As Jarmo mentioned - they're particularly vicious weapons - and quite easily fashioned from regular farming implements. Hussites used those to great effect against the well-armoured crusaders :

I agree, I'd rather see the technology as an antithesis to magic (as was the case in Arcanum). Considering that the Arcane Veil is supposedly easily pierced by firearms, it seems that PE might utilize a similar approach. That said, I wouldn't mind magical bullets - e.g. blessed bullets dealing more damage to the undead.

I don't care how many cookbooks Tim Cain has to sell to fund Arcanum 2 - make it happen! -
Seriously? What the hell?

Let me reiterate a very important point : we absolutely need a large selection of combat music - the lack of variety is usually the biggest reason behind people muting game soundtracks and using their own. Ideally, each larger area would have its own combat theme - as was the case in Mask of the Betrayer. Also, Justin, you mentioned before that you were toying with an idea that the soundtrack would have live instruments (classical guitar, cello etc.) in it. Is that still the case? If so, which instruments are under your consideration? And since I've mentioned combat themes...here's my all-time favourite:

It's not exclusive to gaming. I think Japanese devs share a certain mentality with anime companies and others producing art - that history makes for good base design. If you look at Ghibli films, a lot of Miyazaki's designs are straight out of European history. Armour and architecture especially. Of course, they add a layer of Japanese weirdness, but look at Nausicaa, Earthsea etc. Or the recent Berserk movies - while the main hero designs are quite outrageously fantasyish and demonic, the background guys (and Griffith for the most part) are all in historical looking European armour. I could go on. The point is - even when doing over the top fantasy stuff, the Japanese seem to draw more from actual historical designs than European or American designers. You know, it's like they actually looked at real armour, instead of rehasing their childhood DnD memories mixed with american football gear. At this point, I'm beginning to suspect that most of them are either too lazy to do proper research or perhaps believe that "we can do better" and discount historical designs altogether. And we're left with "DnD memories mixed with american football gear" most of the time, sadly. How many recent titles had designs that you'd recognize without knowing the context that they appear in? I'd say only Witcher games qualify.

Why do I get a feeling that Adam will post soon that the update will be postponed and we should fold our tents and put out the campfire.
