PC Gamer October 2009 Article
Nepenthe replied to gnrfan228's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
The last time I heard that sentence, there was a 'your honor' mixed in with the rest! -
Sounds to me like Borderlands was at least meant to target you. I like RPGs, but for some reason I've never been able to muster much enthusiasm for Dragon Age: Origins. But then again, I got both Jade Empire and Mass Effect as 'classics' packages over a year after release and they both knocked my socks off. (And I have no idea how Jade Empire managed to do it, I was just going through my old games a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't think of any reasons for playing it...). I guess I got my preorder just because it's from a 'trusted developer' - in the same way I would have AP preordered if preorders were locally available at the moment. I do look every day, though Just shows that a game like AP touches the gaming interests of a lot of people with varying tastes.

Wow, that yacht looks pretty sweet. I hope Obs will manage to avoid the major tearing that was present in the last walkthrough, though!

Weapon combat doesnt look good.

This is just hysterical. Do you do this for a living? If not, you should try some of those amateur nights at comedy clubs, if your live delivery is anything like this, you could make a lot of money! Honestly, I've never seen that many inane complaints in a single post, and 'doesn't look like fun' is a real piece de resistance. -
*sob* After looking at the credited voice actor on IMDB: *double sob*

My point was that BM shows that it's possible to design an infiltration-focused gameplay where not killing anyone is not only possible, but can actually be more rewarding than going in guns blazing. No vent ducts whatsoever. And no magic either, aside from insta-changing clothes and enemies not being suspicious that some bald dude with a barcode in the back of his skull, that they've never seen before, is now the latest member of their security outfit. I have no idea how real world ops are conducted, but I'm inclined to believe that producing corpses is very messy and risky, and therefore, to be avoided whenever possible. I'm fairly sure that even Blood Money requires you to knock out one of those guards every now and then to get access to his uniform. There isn't one conveniently lying around in EVERY mission. Not really disagreeing with you, mind, just bringing out some different viewpoints (occupational hazard)
-
Have you played Blood Money? Yes. It's already been a couple of weeks, so I can't remember much. All jokes aside, I did think it was somewhat forgettable, even if it was better than the third one. Good points about not necessarily needing air ducts, but I think that if you repeatedly hit high-security targets, you occasionally need to take out a guy or two rather than magically find a way to circumvent all of them
-
Nah, I think that it should be balance between the two. Otherwise the amount of ventilation ducts and stuff becomes just ridiculous. Sometimes the use of (non-lethal) force should be necessary.

Too similiar to Mass Effect?
Nepenthe replied to kreese12's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Not really. Deus Ex was shooter first, "lite" RPG second, while Bloodlines was RPG first, shooter second. Thanks for a meaningless and inaccurate post Morgoth. I rely on you for these things. I think the fact that Deus Ex has fairly little choice via dialogue, and most decisions made are more 'practically' in game (who to kill/keep alive etc. doesn't get decided through a kill/save dialogue but by not shooting them) throws some people off the fact how much you can actually direct your character in Deus Ex. That said, JC Denton's weapon really isn't choice, and that's what has me rubbing my grubby paws together with AP. Can't comment on Bloodlines, it doesn't officially run on my computer (laptop) and I've never bothered to get it so I could just play around with 3danalyze. -
Will bodies of dead foes be salvageable?
Nepenthe replied to ARCHxANGELx23's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Oh dear. I hope it will have the therapeutic value of the WP grenades in deus ex. Setting a whole squad of MJ12 goons on fire with a single shot... *sigh* Yeah, I should probably seek professional help, too. -
I'm still hoping for "half monk, half hitman". Yes, I'm overly infatuated with that one.

New Kotaku preview just went up

It sounds like they are slowly starting the hype machine now - all the previews are saying that AP has been slipping under the radar, but it sure is getting some visibility in all the outlets now. There's still ~2 months left, good time to get the advertising machine going now that they've started. Coming first is also good in this complete drought of games we're undergoing now. I gave up on GTA IV and have already set up four dates this week. I mean, if I don't watch out, this could spell the end of my geeky singleness and kill my ability to play ~50h CRPGs and watch tv series season BD boxes nonstop.

I was always under the impression that Deus Ex sold quite well later on...

Is israel included in the game?
Nepenthe replied to Roei's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
The political situation in Israel is complicated enough to make Iraq's seem like first grade math. That said, if there were once good guys in that conflict, I'd say they've all been killed by now, and not necessarily by the other side. -
Digital Spy preview / interview with Nathan Davis
Nepenthe replied to Pop's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I'm sorry, but what? You end the game then either click on New Game or Exit Game, and it's presumptious if they give you a reason to choose the former? No. He's basically saying that developers should put all the content in from the get-go, because it is presumptious of them to expect players to enjoy the game so much that they would want to play through it all again. His opinion is fair enough. I for one completely disagree and think that it's presumptious to claim such a thing. Building games from the start to be played just once (McGames) is definitely not a good idea. Giving people options for multiple playthroughs is smart, especially since nobody is holding a gun to anybody's head and forcing them to play. Edit: Also YAY for info on what Freelancer etc. means. Thanks, sounds very exciting and am looking forward to the game even more! -
Alpha Protocol preview at Eurogamer

I believe that all the tea in England is imported. -
I already bought GTA IV because of the drought we're undergoing. Hasn't changed the fact that Vice City is the only GTA I've enjoyed even moderately. Give me hubs over open world traffic jams every day of the week and twice on Sundays, thanks.

Alpha Protocol preview at Eurogamer
Nepenthe replied to mkreku's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Having read more than a few British hifi mags, I'd say that in some cases, at least the publisher is getting paid for it, even if the writer isn't. -
Having dealt with more than a few MBAs before returning to academia, I am fairly sure that a surgical removal of common sense is part of most curricula. LMAO, I'm inclined to agree. Classic case of book knowledge vs real world knowledge. In my case it's more of a critique of management as a science. I've got a minor in "management and leadership studies", but in my case it is taught by the department of Political Science and (political science people generally being what most Americans would probably describe as raving commies) maintains a rather critical view of different trends and fads in management, instead of feeding students an overdose of the 'current cool thing' to bring home to their companies (or worse, in the case of consultants, to other peoples companies). I'm hardly the right person to say anything bad about 'book knowledge' :D
