You know it is a bit (sadly) funny and ironic. Untill I read that article, All that I knew about the game were giving me the signals for a massively hyped pile of sub-standart materials again (like some other games). I really hope someone at DA:O gets the hint and has some words with their marketing department. Untill now the game has been portrayed much too shallower and brainless than it seems to be. Maria: I know, for most people intresting stuff is whats on the boobs and gore department but what is under the hood (and it turns out to be a monster V12 with external intake fans and dry shot nitro instead of a dinky jap. hybrid) is intresting for the folks who stomp around in here too. Anyway, don't feel bad, at least we found out before the game was releases. And we got to read an article written by someone who knows what he is talking about too. No loss. Edit: Too much motorsports sorry

[rant] Moriarty and Simms were suspiciously like the Kilian vs Gizmo in FO and CotA were a shameless rip from FoT's ghoul settlement that worships a Bomb. A lot of things that were cool enough were taken from the other games (including FO:POS and the design documents for FOT2, FO3 (Jefferson) and FO:POS2) I would really like to give some credits to B for a few unique things they did create (Well they did rip some from "Urban Vampire Love Novel"s but whatever) but most of the time the whole thing was about here is some cool stuff, here is some totaly unrelated quests (except the cool stuff is the q giver), have fun [/rant] Now after little episode, can we get back to talking about FO:NY instead of Obl, i mean FO3's shortcomings? For the most part I would love to see our "unluckiest human on the wasteland" try to get his/her stuff in order. A beginning like: Depending on her background she was a Guard or a Traveller or an Indentured Worker or outright Slave in a caravan that was attacked and wiped out completely. Our Heroine manages to evade the carnage by falling down a mine ventilation shaft. Inside the place she finds a little military forward listening station with a few salvagable things, the most important thing being the Pip-boy Then you move on to NV (as you need to eat and earn cash) and start doing small stuff for wherever you can find work. After a while you get enough rep to start doing jobs for some factions (like caravan guard guilds, trader guilds etc). Maybe start planting your earned cash into acquiring some "locations" like shops or bars or whatever. Or become a known gun for hire / scavenger / gunman. Bit by bit you get access to bigger things and more complex things (like working for a faction then turning your coat and selling them to a higher paying customer). And in the background some little job that you did at the beginning begins a landslide that shakes up the power structure, escalating into a faction war. And before you know it, you are fighting for your life again, doing your stuff (sabotage, slaughter, create a damn powerblock by uniting weak faction and a well equipped army of your own (thenks to your silver tounge and contracts) ), destroying all who are a threat to your being. Of course the game does not have to follow the above formula, but I would really like to feel that all my actions and the world is connected somehow and despite whatever happens in the main story I am growing (my cash, my posessions, my contacts that supply me more stuff, my shops, my trophies.... whatever)

I am not informed beyond generic tidbits but it seems this will be an "Supernatural & Urban" setting. I hope it will be somewhat akin to "World of Darkness" instead of Twilight / Buffy'esque settings. I don't have much info on the factions beyond what I read about them in the test (a pharagraph or two worth of text for each faction)

I thought that was the sandart for most of XP/Level sysem using games nowadays? (Except some games like Diablo 2 but those games have exponantially increasing xp requirements so that after a few levels it forces you to move on instead of harvesting 20xp per mob to amass 65milion xp to the next level )

On a semi related note; you guys (and gals) are aware of the little fact that those "Urban Supernatural Romance" novels (and their more pornographic cousins) are considered fantasy too, i hope. The question of determining what is (High, Low, whatever) fantasy always makes me chuckle.

DnD 2nd ed actually had something like that (the normal humanoids gave 15 to 25 XP. Your actual XP income was for hunting really big monsters or questing (which usually pointed you to hunt really big bad guys or monsters ) As for Computer RPGs, System Shock had a similar system. The enemies were actually there to slow you down and inconveniece you. You got your XP (Aka Modules) for reaching pre-determined points (and hidden containers that contained them as a reward to exploring). I think SS2 is still the best game that managed to balance the scaricity (sp?) of resources (ammo, boosters, breakable weapons) with rewards to exploring.

My wish was on having a primary play area of Vegas about the size of FO3 map but with lesser number of much better constructed communities and more open world enterable building rubbles (Instead of dungeons every 5th building and the 4 others being un-enterable even in open world) On top of that, a "Fallout style world map" that gives you the illusion of much wider emptyness while you fast travel on the map to reach distant communities and locations. A Car used in FO2 style (for the world map only) would be a nice thing but a lot of people would cry "Why didn't you design the city without rubble so we can use our buggy / highwayman in it?" so thats just a far fetched wish (not to mention the crazy collision detection would stop you from moving whenever you hit a pebble ) Edit: I know you can get around collision detection by coding the car as a hovering entity and making it graphically seem like it is on the ground but then it would create some bad texture collisions everytime you hit an incline...

If only the damn game (Bioshock) had some meat (is an inventory that much of a slowdown for the fast games of our generation? Why not some semblance of character development through both stats and some dialogue from you? Why do we have to be either a mute or a manly mannish man with macho curses every other step?) on its bones... If only....

I don't think those games will be possible due to the obscure nature of D&D IP's computer rights. The IP has gone over to so many different developers and publishers that it seems to be a mess to find out whom you need to and whom you can skip paying to get the old games

Still Mech -Commander 2 Finished the original Carver 5 campaign then moved on to battle Starfox's Rebirth of White Company. Now I'm planning to tackle Wolfman X's Campaign(s) starting with Pictures of Rebellion. You can grab the campaigns as stand alone packs here

Crossbows do have their uses. The little fact that you can have it armed and ready to go makes it ideal to prowl with it and take a free potshot at the opening of the combat. after that, you switch to your meele weapon. It is also really easy to train and use compared to bows. Even your average shortbow requires 2 hands and some decent strenght. (Also if you want to cheese, until you get your second attack per round, Crossbows offer the best bang for your only attack. Or any similar situation, where you have only 1 chance like sneak-attacking low to mid level thief scouting ahead and so on) That said, I also agree that anything bigger than a longsword (or maybe bastard/falchion sword) begins to strech the limits of plusibility. (Yes I hate blademasters with schytes)

Starcraft 2, Starcraft 2, Starcraft 2 Nice campaign, good multi (as seen so far from battlereports and exhibition matches) but who cares about those. That editor is going to be so useful that it is quite saddening to predict that it will wipe all of it's competitors off the map like WoW did. (I really hate you relic.)

Sannom: Yes, I also loved the Runaway. The first game was a truly nice package but WTH was the second game? It was just plain wrong in so many ways (story wise) Remember ?
-
Virimor: Yes, I have to agree that while there has been more than a few good adventures like Ceville, Secret Files and so on, there hasn't been a game that you can call classic since TLJ. I'm still not completely sure what makes it that striking but it was.

Sigh. Please check your statement. Do you really believe Gears of War X will be remembered after Gear's of War X+1 is released? There are a bunch of games that are "flagships" of this generation of consoles. Do you really believe MGS4 was "better" experience than its predecesors or the manly man greyish browns are the classics?
-
Virumor: Have those games been released as English language releases yet?
-
Not really purk. Oblivion was a very popular game. Can you call it a classic?
-
Yes and No Boo, As it stands now, Blizz MMO team are building "on" the foundations of WoW. Sure their engine and IP will change but we will surely be seeing most of the concepts from WoW in future games. I guess that defines a Classic in MMO Genre. UO was a classic, Everquest wasn't classic as it only gave 3rd dimension and collecting to the player but after EQ only Wow managed to become one. (Aion? no idea but it seems to much like a wow clone atm. Sure a better designed, prettier and more tidy but still a clone. Disclaimer: Haven't experienced it first hand yet) Edit: I think we can add Old SWG and Eve to the list and thats it.

/Shrug. Being a Classic does not mean being perfect. (at least for me) A Classic game is one of those rare games that despite all of its flaws, drawbacks and idiot choices; manages to become something much more than it's parts. For example, as a game Portal has a lot of weak points, short, linear, more than a few of design flaws in the puzzles and so on. So what? The game still delivers a massive puch within it's 6 or 8 hours and that is it. You are left bleeding on the ground, craving for more... I felt the same thing with BG&E and Riddick. Sure forced boss battles in both games sucked but so what? I still wanted more and I had this sad feeling seeing the game end..
-
Portal is the only title I can call a classic without second thoughts. In my definition classics are those games that despite their flaws and missing parts ( portal is too damn short dammit! I need 20 more hours of it ) they manage to give you something much much bigger than the sum of all its parts. (If it is eligible add BG&E to the list) Edit: Riddick. You have to play it to understand Edit 2: WoW. Say what you want to say and despise it if you want to. It is the blood and ichor bleeding edge in MMO gaming. Sure it takes them 2 years to tie their shoes after it unlaces but except for "public quest" and "open battleground" aspects from WaR, it is the pinnacle and it is still evolving to include better gimmicks and suprisingly, it is inserting more and more story into the "game". There are however quite a few games that are "just not classic" for my tastes. -Company of Heroes and Dawn of War 2 are the prime runners in this category. I loved the game but only if they had some editors... -Half Life 2 and episodes. Top tier games but somehow they always felt a bit not enough -German Games. I hate you f********* Deepsilver. There are a lot of nice and different (Read: not much dumbed down) games coming from german developers but it takes ages to see them in English. (Yes, my German sucks. I can't catch half the spoken content without concentrating hard and it is very iritating ) TBC...

Favorite RTS and why do you like it
cronicler replied to tubgoatstugboats's topic in Computer and Console
For all your Mech Commander needs, you can use this site. To begin with download the Mech Warrior 2 full game Then download the Wolfman X's Addon and install it on top of your MC2 install After that I suggest trying the original "Carver V" Campaign to get started. There are also other Campaigns that you can download but they all need WolfmanX's mod Have fun! (Ps: Haven't started on MC 1 Gold yet so no info on that, other than the fact that it is still being played online )
