Obsidian making Fallout: New Vegas
cronicler replied to CoM_Solaufein's topic in Computer and Console
Aristes: As you pointed out, this issue is really a huge tangled web of problems and booby traps. On the other hand, It has always been fun to interact with weird groups in Fallout (and wasteland) Children of the Cathedral (Bad guys' tools in FO1), BOS (I mean those guys are the warrior monks aren't they?), Followers of the Apocalypse, Hubologists, The ghoul town in FO:Tactics... Heck you can even count that shotgun wedding in this category too Anyway what , am trying to say is; using religion in the game is one of the most natural things. It just carries too much flame potential especially on todays politically correctness and religious sensibilities and all that bull.... -

So based on dissecting the trailer, we know that the "Faith" moves will probably be in the game. We will probably see the Vehicle chase/race sections back too based on the end of the cutscene. (I likes how they hijacked the aerocrane that probably came to their rescue when their car broke down in desert. I wonder if the sneaky and free journalism bits are still in the game. No camera spotted so far in trailers Also since they are probably using the Edge system we should probably say goodbye to pre-set Stick-Fu battle sections too. damn. -
Oh well at least I wasn't totally wrong angrybrujah@schrecknet.vtm it is then

angrybrujah@nosfernet.vp? I forgot what nosferatu used as their home system tag. it was not nosfernet but this was what I could come up with at the time

First Beyond Good And Evil 2 gameplay footage

TBH telling what made BG&E a good game was always a trouble for me. The stealth was good but nothing fancy (like smoke/flash bombs, spider-mans etc) , the combat was stick-fu; immensely enjoyable and somehow standing on the border of too simple, too hard and too much deadly realistic... I, I cant really put this into eloquent worlds; the whole game was just GOOD. Never perfect maybe but never without an unoriginal or funny or breathtaking moment too. And on Jade getting Parkour moves, well if you remember she was a bloody loaded spring jumping around, rolling and platforming on rooftops; It feels to me the game play tech needed to mature a lot to give her skills some justified use instead of the usual new gimmick patched on the game... Then again, as I am understanding now, I am a FAN of Jade and the "Jet-Boots Attack!!" and "Carlson & Peeters!!!". Funny how such a game can make me a become a fan in my subconcious without me realising it. -

Karna and Reputation. TBH, I would not shed a tear if they scrapped Karma altogether and managed to get a Reputation system. Many of the choices you would be facing as a drifter, problem solver / maker wouldn't have clear cut goods or bads. If I concluded this deal in favor of the x city than that place gets better/rich. If i favor y city, they get the benefits. There is no real black or white in this unless you make place a absolute den of evil and b a bastion of light. Yes I agree that a counter to check if I am a nice person or a backstabbing sob is nice but that does not really affect who gives me the jobs. It needs to be done, I am an agent. Money talks even if you hate the guy. Jumping on to the money part. In the old Fallouts bottlecaps were the basic currency sure but no one had them in real quantities, the real deals were among the lines of "Ill give you 3 rifles, 1 shotgun, 2 nuke colas, an iguana-on-a-stick and 3 fruits for 348 10mm bullets and that leather Armor and... 3 caps." It was just a way to count loose change. In FO2 we had even more currency like redding mine chits, NCR dollars, Reno.... condoms... I would like to see this back in the game. Different factions like traders, miners, water merchants all issuing their own chits and bartering for the chit worths and items. Swap barter. A universal cash unit does make the game faster but it does hit the setting too. -

Well It is a very very extrem simplification but it can be acceptable if we were only about about small things like pistols and such. If you are playing A HW guy with PA, It gets stupid as you need to carry 2 or 3 miniguns (1+ spare) on top of the ones you are going to loot. On Armor side you also need 2 sets. well more than 2 sets if you are battling mutants as they don't drop PA. It just becomes wrong. Sure no weight ammo but now I have to carry useless spare ammo and weapons to fix my own after every fight or 2.... -
The pruned post was a joke rant/flame against VW, not Deadly Nightshade. I guess I was too obscure in my language. Sorry If I caused hard feelings. Aristes: Basically I blasted a bit at DN, after that I made a long rant about how VW is a... tease that can't hide up in the dancing platform forever and she was going to get a good spanking when she came down from that dammed platform...

Nope. Atm, there is only arms and legs and heads flying around. If you do too much overkill they split in 2 and fly around... (Except energy weapons. They disintegrate on mortal crits) -

Probably replaced the pc -human model with the in game teddy bear model. He might have gone for the whole 9 yards and embedded the bear into/onto the Vault Jump Suit too. -

CD project is an unknown and unimportant small fish for the hysteria makers, if you think about it from the view of ratings. Who cares a bunch of barbarians in the east do? Western company doing some realistic world related stuff=ratings. Sure I am probably being too cynical but thats how I feel. (Btw I got your point before. I am just saying them using Religion near a game with a picture/memory of such blood and gore is not a good idea. Hell they would probably use footage from FO3 like the one in the clip i posted to show gore. You know, Games make teens and children evil and all that typical crap. ) -

Not to be negative but I don't think current... morality? game standards? mind set? can cope with "any" hint of religious troubles / troubles about religions. Sure Obsidian folks can make a nice quest chain involving such factions but then before you can say hi, some "I am right, you are sinner, evil, devil, public enemy" person will start campaigning about the game. Just remember how the 2 seconds of bare ass in ME caused a hysteria. Not to mention neuter gender alien becoming a homo by the geniuses of media... Edit: I sometimes think that if old games like JA2, Fallout, XCOM were released in these times they would all get "AO" or "Not even suitable for AO" and be shunned by the media and the loud ones... -

Im still unsure why it was removed in the first place with Gamble... I mean seriously, what better way to increase game time by 30 minutes to 5 hours with minimal effort? 5 or 10 nps that are hooked to this game or that game. Some basic game or games like dice / dice poker / chess / checkers / card game and voila you have extra content... Oh my, oh oh... We seriously need in the game!Pst. Check the link above! -
Are you sure? It is a bit less aggressive than the crap I see hosted over here but... :

Mr Iguanabob: I think at least on this regard we can trust Obsidian without a doubt. I'm not sure on the natural path but I don't have many doubts on figter/diplomat/thief/good/evil sides of the game. Interplay lost the DnD license due to an accaunting error. The Geniuses at the finance department forgot to pay the royalities. Promethean: He meant that he wanted good quality encounters and locations, in less quantity, taking place at ranges bigger than every 5th step, not another copy pasta fest Good quality little encounter: The weird quest of sexy underwear that begins in the middle of no where. Bad quality encounter: Body part decorated, why the hell do you infest this building too? Raider building number 74. Also why bigger maps? To give the feeling of wastes. Edit: and to leave space for the modders -

Well the old Doctor skill was pretty much useless outside healing crippled limbs tbh. The current merger is not so bad but the stimpak heals broken limbs part just destroys it. I wish stimpaks did not affect these and you had to take a perk/trait to be able to heal crippled limbs in the game (Something like: working as your fathers assistant gives you a choice between 3 perks: Ability to heal broken limbs, ability to treat poisoning and ability to heal 2x damage with Medicine). Then again people would have hated it if you had to go to doctor every time you broke a leg. Mkreku: Ugh that was really a bad call on game design. you are correct to remind that one too. -

I had mentioned this earlier but it got buried in the debris I guess. Adding a basic resource system to the repair/craft section would be the simplest solution I guess. You tear down unwanted equipment to get spare parts; mechanichal, electronic and optical. (Also leather scraps and armor scraps and ceramic plates) Each one required for more advanced guns and items. The weapon condition and your collective skill (something like repair + gun skill /2 for weapons and repair + science/2 for armors) decides how many parts you need to keep your armor working. Small damage to Power Armor? a few bolts, maybe some padding or plates replaced and so on. This way we can have s decent repair sytem without having to carry 5 miniguns and 3 PAs.. -

Be polite lass, its not polite to stare. Actually the crafted weapons were a nice concept. I'm not sure why they went so overboard to kill it but I also fount the choo-choo and the dart gun nice if illogical (never ending Venom ) Some ability to modify your weapons, (Scopes, rails, home made red laser pointers, pre-war stuff like Beta or C mags...) some ability to craft your weapons (destroy that useless corpse of rifle to get its beautiful kevlar frame (-weight +accuracy). mount your baby on that frame to get a real rifle). It can be good. Virimor: The whole wasteland was compressed so that you would not be too far from your destination. Unfortunately this coupled with 1 map=1 game approach made the game very weird experience in some moments. You had to use the fast travel to skip these... -

I was in a discussion about Fallout style maps on... Nexus? not sure... We were debating how you could make Fallout style maps in F3 engine. The idea was to make a mix of open cities mod and reasonable computer requirements. Anyway Imagine the Town occupying a somewhat circular area of 1r at the center of the map. Outside the town you have another r of empty space that is somewhat worked over, ie, some hidden goodies, some satellite houses etc. When you enter this area a map icon appears which indicates you can transfer to the world map. Lastly outside this area you have another r or 2 worth of empty space. this space acts like the transition grid in previous Fallouts (ie you get dropped to the World Map automatically). This space can be actually be made smaller but if you want to give the feeling of being in a god forsaken place in the middle of nowhere you need to give the Player illusion of wast empty spaces and walling in every side with hills or ruins just defeats it tbh. 1 or 2 is ok but overuse kills it. I don't think vehicles or mounts will be an option IF we get a main map similar to FO3. The mounts in Oblivion were feasible as the whole place was depicted as empty country side. I don't think 4 or more wheeled vehicles would fit in the ruins. Then again if we get a map with lots of satellite locations and a world map? Why not a mobile home or some nice choppers? -

The first RiL blueprints are in your Dad's safe (thou that requires 100 lock picking?) or Moira's shop I think and you can gather the ingredients up to and in megaton. However as you commented it becomes useless after your first random dungeon and due to botched degradation rates... Also I did not say I liked it. I just remarked that B. tied all the factors to a single skill to keep it simple. Yes KISS principle is important but they did go overboard a bit in places. Stealth and Steal merge is a 50-50 issue. It is easy to assume a guy who is adept at moving quietly would be good ad liberating things too, both skills have very narrow focus and they both are about the same subject. First Aid and Doctor Merge is also similar. Doctor skill allowed you to cure crippled limbs but beyond that both skills served the same purposes. I guess if B. had included some perks like "Advanced Medical Knowledge" or "Doctor's Training"similar things to limit your ability to cure or create anything with basic medicine it would have been better but in essence this was not a bad call either. Traps and Throwing... Well this one is a buster to be honest. To ease the game play and to keep it smooth and simple is one thing but this one really tries the limits. I guess this merger is also the reason we don't have any throwing knifes etc in the vanilla game too. Piloting and Animal Handling. I know the first on is from Tactics and the second one is from an even worse source; PnP. It could have been nice if the game engine was up to using Mounts and Vehicles but as it stands now, I am just writing these here to irritate and bait you. Sorry! Edit Number N: I really forgot that B. took the outdoorsman and gambling totally out of the game. No wold map (and no functions tied to it. Sure a lot could have been tied to it but B. probebly did not think of them highly so they did not put them into the game.) probably meant the end of Outdoors man but I was really disappointed in the lack of any games of chance in a game that had the ability to have mini-games... The Skill List: Small Guns Big Guns Energy Weapons Unarmed Melee Weapons +Throwing +Traps Merged Into Explosives *First Aid *Doctor Merged Into Medical -Sneak -Steal Merged Into Stealth Lockpick Science Repair Speech (Piloting) Barter Gambling Outdoorsman *There are also some other skills that are used in PnP such as Primitive Weapons, Animal Handling and some craft focused skills like farming etc. These are not really relevant to here. Just mentioned them for a full list **Piloting Affected how tight control you had and how fast you could move with vehicles in FoT. Since the engine is not really up to any large area movements this one is also moot and mentioned only for the sake of completeness. Edit N+1: Rambling mode on, If you check the skill description of Small Guns you might notice the sentences about taking care of it etc. I just wish we could use combined skills to determine how well we can do something in the 3rd game or tieing different functions to different skills but alas.... -

On a side note I still cant believe that Man, Jack Malcolm Thorpe Fleming Churchill is real. I mean I even checked the net for the Oslo 1939 and... He is real?? Ok this is too weird. I have just checked a lot of different articles and books and he is real it seems... You might say I am suprised as hell. -

Well the crafting currently in the game does not really make sense tbh. It just seems to be there for a couple novelity items and to provide guys who choose big guns as tag a weapon in the beginning... I haven't seen any thing decent done with it. Still its presence in the codes at least gives me the hope that some decent things can be done with it. I mean how hard is it to stuff some pressured canisters in a bag and then use a grenade as a fuse? Also there already is a throwing skill hidden in the game, B. choose to add it's effects under the explosives / traps tree. I can understand why they did it; Skill affects damage, Throwing affects grenade damage is silly. so it becomes explosives the gets the damage modifiers. Throwing skill and non explosive thrown objects were scrapped. Also the game didn't really focus on tactical combat so anything other than basic mines to craft booby traps were also scrapped. Sure I can see how this and merging stealth/pickpocket/lockpick into 1 skill makes the game easier and faster but... I really don't agree to this much loss of details...
