  1. I'd much prefer Nietzsche on Ice. That said, last three movies watched were Frozen, Brave, and The Siege (1998). Let It Go is stuck in my head... Good thing Idina Menzel has an amazing voice.
  2. Just finished Burial at Sea Part 2. In a word: Jesus. I'm not sure how to feel about the ending, but the entirety of the DLC is just amazingly well done from a narrative and character development standpoint. Biggest freak out: Also, ending:
  3. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/in-response-to-president-putins-address-to-the-russian-parliament Thank you, UK.
  4. It's a good thing they signed an Association Agreement, then, rather than starting the process of joining the European Union. Joining it is a very long term goal for Ukraine, but one it seems willing to carry out... For now. As for the sanctions and energy, the real problem is going to be in the Baltic area, where most countries rely on Russian imports of energy (and which have the most motivation to drift away from it).
  5. The EU is a single market, that's what counts. The total economic size of the EU is number one in the world.
  6. I meant the fact that you have to argue and explain at length why it's all about resources, not eg. the lengthy list of reasons you cite. Thank you. A very complex web of reasons for one of the worst wars America fought.
  7. The fact that you have to argue about it is a pretty strong clue that resources weren't the primary reason. The Cold War was a conflict between democracy/capitalism and communism/planned economics, fought through proxy wars. The plethora of such conflicts, most notably the 19 year long Vietnam war, were motivated primarily by ideology. The containment strategy utilized by the United States was also ideologically motivated, to stop the spread of communism. There are other reasons. For example, violence in Africa is often motivated by ethnicity and religion, rather than control over resources. The same goes for the wars in former Yugoslavia, which were fraught with atrocities. The wars fought by Israel were wars of survival, where its opponents were motivated by the desire to extinguish the fledgling nation. I can keep bringing these examples up. Also, if you're going to make extraordinary claims about Euromaidan being funded and orchestrated by the West, please provide extraordinary evidence to back your claims up.
  8. While noting the economic interests of waging war is important, dismissing other root causes as "manufactured for the general public" is silly. There are plenty of reasons war is fought and economics is just a part of them, not the sole reason. Ideology and religion are just two of the most notable.
  9. It's the face we see that matters. He might be the most pleasant person in the world, offering free blowjobs from his private harem, but if he speaks out and makes crazy claims, that's what goes into the world and influences folks.
  10. I think it's important to remember that Putin is a person who apparently sincerely believes that homosexual people are all paedophiles.
  11. If it's inspired by Infinity Engine, you should be able to use custom portraits in the game. A third party application (or better yet, a commission) would allow you to get what you want.
  12. It makes sense in perspective. Russia's economy is heavily based on exporting resources. Ukraine could compete a fair bit with its reserves in the eastern parts of the country and Crimea, so Russia seeks to tear these parts of the country away and annex them to reduce competition. This is a strategy that will backfire, as Putin just reminded Europe that relying on a hostile foreign power to supply gas and oil is pretty crazy. EU member countries will diversify and reduce their reliance on Russia. Then again, as Sochi shows, Pootyn ain't the most rational planner.
  13. There's also the little issue of Crimea having large deposits of gas and oil. Like eastern Ukraine. Now guess where "ethnic Russians" are campaigning for a return to the motherland... Russia does appear to aim for a restoration of the Soviet Union, so it should come as no surprise. Particularly for Poland, who had plenty of interactions (read: war) with the USSR. This crisis does give the opportunity for my country to show off its proficiency in dealing with the east. <3 Radek Sikorski <3 I can offer no other reply, as you phrased what I wanted to say in an excellent way. I can have no hope of improving on it. You also have to define the term Europa. Whose definition do we use? The Greeks, centered around the Aegean? The Romans', centered around Rome? The concept of a common European heritage is relatively recent and excluding countries basing on their location is fairly arbitrary. Peter the Great specifically modernized the Russian Empire to bring it in line with contemporary European powers, is that enough? Or not? If we go by culture and society, I wouldn't say Russians are non-European. Even if they have a strange government pursuing the Eurasian ideology (which would make sense centuries ago), regular Russians are still predominantly European.
  14. It's more of a case of really, really bad historical experiences. Nazis were horrible people, but their violence was concentrated in a very small timeframe. The Soviets, woah boy, that was an entirely different case. Apart from being just as bad at the Nazis and even worse than them in many aspects, their occupation and corrupt influence lasted decades, killing tens of thousands, displacing hundreds of thousands, and ruining entire societies and economies like the corrupt empire the USSR was. The impact is still felt to this day. I wouldn't say that support for Neo-Nazi and other far right scum is on the rise, though. It's more of a case of them creating the illusion of being the most active party, rather than people subscribing to far right ideologies. It's also the reason we likely won't see far right crap too much, since that would destroy the parties' support overnight. Mostly because it would seem like just the thing Russia would be doing. A shame, really. Russians deserve a better government because they're good people, victims of a criminal system that destroyed society unchecked for decades.
  15. Should males be preemptively sterilized as potential rapists? As much as I hate neo-Nazi scum, you cannot imprison people for thought crime. Pre-emptive persecution and imprisonment is the domain of totalitarian regimes. Take your pick, the 20th century has load of examples to offer. I'd argue the U.S. didn't invade Iraq (solely) for oil, because destroying it destabilized the region and served the opposite purpose, making the supply of oil volatile and jacking up its prices. Retaining access would've been simpler if the U.S. appeased Saddam or attempted to replace him. Putin doesn't give a rat's ass about legitimacy or consequences, though, as long as his short term interests are protected. Evidence is always useful and so far there's no reports of widespread far right violence in Ukraine.
  16. Do you have a credible reference that those Neo-Nazis are on a rampage throughout Ukraine? That they are implementing "self defense" brigades that are targeting ethnic Russians? Preparing to commit genocide or ethnic cleansing? Because so far, Crimea is the problem. And Tatars fear further problems. Furthermore, if Russia really wanted to protect Russians, it would not invade and occupy Ukraine, pressing the berserk button of a nation long oppressed by Russia.
  17. Yeah, but it was transferred properly to the United States. Something the tsardom later regretted a great deal.
  18. So, where's the Fallout 4 announcement?
  19. Indeed. I find it amusing that people are focusing on the far right that might cause damage (currently limited to isolated incidents), but handwave Russian aggression comparable to the totalitarian actions of the Soviet Union and Third Reich, like the Anschluss or the occupation of the Baltic states. I wonder which nation with a significant Russian ethnic population will be next. Latvia? Estonia? Will Putin finish what Stalin started and dump the Tatars somewhere else, so that his "endangered Russians" can be safe? In other news, an interesting point. And a decent summary with sources: http://www.nucleardiner.com/archive/item/ukraine-update-17-march-2014
  20. Feel the hype within you, my young Swede. It is swelling within you.
  21. Putin's justification for the land grab are hilarious. Guess he'd be fine if Poland and Germany tag-teamed Kaliningrad on the basis of it being "historically German." All you have to do is invade (or, in Putinian newspeak has it, "recognize local self defence units"), set up a separatist referendum, and consistently play dumb. Presto, you can make a landgrab unmolested, as long as you're a big enough bully.
  22. The Anschluss ballot? Yes.
  23. Even the Nazis had more subtlety: (Are you for the reunification of Austria with the German Reich under the leadership of Adolf Hitler? Big circle: YES Small circle: no)
  24. Angie's not to blame for the bull**** that is the Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien. This thoroughly retarded government body dates back to 1954 and has been providing well paying job for abject failures in life for the past sixty years. Note: I am aware that shooting Nazis falls under the purview of a different law, but any opportunity is good to hammer the BfjM.
