  1. So I was trying to get in a little time with Sunless Sea but got called away for other things. I mistakenly thought that the game paused while in port, which I was, but I had no event screen up such as the admiralty and whatnot. Well, by the time I returned, I *did* have an event screen. My crew was starving and getting ready to eat each other. Fun times! something like 12 food down the drain while I was away and crew going cannibalistic. Instead, I went ballistic. Nerd Rage! ARGGHHHHH
  2. Laugh out loud. I still have yet to finish the second expansion, but I plan to return to it soon, assuming I can find my way to the Surface. Assuming I can survive when I do.
  3. Yeah, I hadn't really considered that. I've only forfeited a couple of times, but irritation with forfeiting is greater when it took you fifteen to twenty minutes setting up a scenario. For me, tabletop is a social experience where we play and chat and discuss moves and the like. The app is more of a 'game' in the sense of focusing on what you do. Probably didn't explain that well. Along the lines of what you said, when you see swipe or scry or some other great kit, you do whatever you possibly can to get it because you might not see it again for a long long time in the tabletop. On the app, you can mine them replaying scenarios quickly and you need to do that because you've got to tune your deck to be legendary ready.
  4. I figured I'd get some blowback for that post, and I'm okay with that. However, I'm not sure there aren't people who would gladly have the game developed around the idea of catering to modders. I don't mind modding and, while it's relatively difficult, there have been some mods that people have done for Pillars. Nonetheless, my experience is that when a game is developed to cater to modding, the single player campaign suffers. If, as you say, the goal is to polish up the internal tools that the devs use and granting greater access to the public, fair enough. If the point is to move modding forward on the design philosophy, I'm going argue against it because I disagree with it. They've got a modding forum here for PoE. Seems quiet there, but it's still a place to discuss various mods. I'm glad it's there for people who want it. I hope, as long as it's just a matter of opening up the engine for people to tinker, you guys get what you want. I'm going to be leery of it until I'm sure it's not going to end up dumbing down the single player campaign, but assuming you're right and I'm just confused, which is entirely possible, I'll find that reassurance and be happy. Also, as I understand it, a lot of this depends on whatever Obsidian should choose for the engine. If it's a later version of Unity, aren't they becoming somewhat more open for casual tinkering? See here, I'll just read your response and give it a good thought. Probably the best deal you'll get on the internet.
  5. I could dissect the arguments I've seen above, but I don't want to diminish those arguments. Nonetheless, since the point of these forums is to allow the players to state their desires, let me be crystal in what I want. I want a great single player experience provided by designers unfettered by the constraints of a 'moddable' engine. I don't begrudge people who find mods necessary to make up for deficiencies in the original design. However, my experience, through years of playing (and I experienced Might and Magic 3 at considerably older than 10 years) is that developers following their own vision and staying true to that concept will produce a superior product. Ones that rely on mods will fail before they even begin. Make a great game. If there's room to provide modding opportunity for casual designers, fair enough. Just don't concentrate on the modding aspect at the expense of the core game because your core fans, the people who really bought into the Project Eternity idea in the first place, trusted the developers to come up with a great game they could play and enjoy without fan 'designers' to make up for developer deficiencies.
  6. As regards Fallout, queue the crowds bemoaning the need for graphics, but I can dig it. Frankly, I enjoy games with substandard or dated graphics, but it's not like I wouldn't enjoy them more if they looked better. Some people act like a game with good graphics is only for the 'sellout' crowd, which is just idiotic. For example, even though I think the graphics are actually quite pleasant for Sunless Sea, I was a little put-off for by the fact that it's only in windowed mode. Minor thing and it's a great game. Come to think of it, I wonder if I can change a setting to make it not windows.
  7. For less than seven bucks, Sunless Sea is a remarkable game. Wait, scratch that. Sunless Sea is a remarkable game that cost me less than seven bucks. The only issue I have with the game so far is that I want to upgrade my ship, engines, and weapons and I can't seem to hang on to cash. I should really look into trading stuff, but it's such a pain and it doesn't seem like I get much of a return so far. Maybe after I'm done paying for new officers and I've figured out where all the places are, it will be easier to start putting money into a ship that won't take such excruciating amounts of time to get anywhere. Still, while it's a pain, it's kind of a cool challenge to figure it out. This has potential to a classic. For me to count it as such, I have to finish it. So far, so good.
  8. Rat bastard Sunless Sea. Other than that, this is a great game. Well... maybe because of that. Truly polished, also.
  9. If deck five comes out in weeks which is to say more than one week and less than one month I'll eat my hat. I'll be pleasantly surprised, but the devs haven't exactly been quick to release the last couple of ADs. It will be nice if they do, though, since expeditious work without attendant bugs might just mean they're getting a good hang of programming the card workings, which means we may just see more Adventure Paths. That would be worth making a meal of my hat. What the hell, we'll call it more than one week and less than two months. If we count weeks thusly, they might just pull it off!
  10. Yeah, instead of purchasing the overlord package, I bought a copy to gift to a friend. I like how you can purchase something as a gift and leave it in your inventory until you want to send it to someone. I have someone in mind, but I'm not sure who'll get it so it can sit there while I figure it out. I want to send it before the game releases, though. Mine is ready to download on day one. I'm pretty confident I'll like it. Unlike others who've been badly burned by the preorder experience, I have rarely been let down by something I was really looking to play. In the realm of stupid choices, preordering is pretty far down for me.
  11. I keep seeing D:OS mentioned and advertised on steam. Maybe I should just try it and then I'll know what you're all talking about. I've heard a lot more good about it than bad at this point. However, as regards WL3, I wonder if it's being designed with MP in the forefront or if it's being designed as a single player game with MP features worked in. Games will say they're both, but my experience is that someone always gets the prime cut when the dogs of single and multi player are fighting over the scraps.
  12. I had the same problem. It was during Scalia's remarks and it dumped me out five or six times until I shrugged and went on to other things. I couldn't stop what I was doing anyway and so I was listening while doing other stuff. What I heard was pretty good. Had some great exchanges. Scalia was his usual self. I was greatly entertained by the whole idea that someone must be aggrieved for there to be an ethical dilemma. Probably not doing justice to his argument, but I'm also considerably less intelligent than anyone at that table... or this forum for that matter. lol There were some funny lines in all that, though. However, the reason I'm posting is to point out that the videos demonstrate rhetorical approach. While the most important thing might ostensibly be finding the truth, the better or more persuasive argument will still win, even if it's wrong. That's not an indictment of what is a truly classical art, just a reminder that it is not perfect. Merely as perfect as we can find. Still better than an emperor defining ethics for society. Also the idea of 'pertinent' is something that also came into question as the Romans transitioned from the Republic into Empire. I would say that bringing up mental health issues is a little random, but the point is that the rhetorical lessons eventually became increasingly convoluted and confusing on one hand and entirely irrelevant in a society that relies less on rhetoric in court and more on 'justice' doled out by authoritarian figures.
  13. I agree that the bury a card for a boon wildcard isn't so bad. Bury the card that was +2 on the check to acquire or ditch the top of the blessing deck is just evil. With that said, I don't think any of the wildcards are too tough at this point. Sure, in some scenarios they really suck, but since no character need die in any scenario unless you're extremely careless (like literally playing drunk careless) or completely new to the game, you just give it the ol' college try and call out "Once more into the breach dear friends!"
  14. I've been interested in Dungeon of the Endless. I think I'm sold, but I'll have to wait until I've mined Sunless Sea till the last ore deposit It a grea one for sure.
  15. I played a bit of Sunless Sea for a while. The stories are quirky and from time to time lengthy, but I've actually read all of them thoroughly when I encounter them. Great game writing. However, probably owing to its quirky nature, some of the story and quests are simply too hard for me to follow. I think I'm supposed to get colors for folks at this colony of mummies or something. Still quite fun and I'll continue playing. I took on some sort of sea monster who took something like six or seven shots to kill. I've had to repair my ship twice in a really short period of time and so I'm constantly poor. I'm thinking of just running away from the bad guys unless I'm forced to fight. I don't know what advantage there is to fighting. I've gotten food from bats and some weird thing we killed, along with a bit of terror. I dissected some crab looking thing. I got silk off a pirate ship. Nothing that seems all that important that I should risk damage.
  16. Great spitballing, but a couple of those I would simply forfeit and restart. One mental damage whenever you recharge a card is simply insane (sorry for the pun) and I don't even think it would be fun. a penalty when you fail, however, would be reasonable. Personally, I think legendary is a decent challenge for great reward. I don't want a competition to see who can make the game increasingly grueling, otherwise we end up with wild-cards like: Every time a character casts a spell or uses a weapon he or she discards her hand and deck, the app and operating system are erased from the tablet which also bursts into spontaneous fire, after which a hand holding a revolver pops out of the molten slag and shoots the player. I think wildcards that are roughly the same difficulty are good. For me, if they put in crazy wildcards just so a tiny fraction of players can brag about beating them just doesn't make sense. ...But I'm just one player and I seriously doubt anyone cares what I think. I'm just kind of determined to say it anyway.
  17. It's always a struggle because I want to support this developer, but I won't use anything in the overlord edition. ...And I refuse to pay for product I won't use. I mean, the guide is tempting, but I'll probably not use it other than to flip through it for fun and interesting tidbits. The ringtones appeal to me, but it would be a hollow excuse since it's not like you can't do that with an extra five minutes without them being prepackaged. I think, since I'm confident the game will be great (although I've avoided reading anything except the main background information), I'll instead preorder one copy for myself and one copy for a friend. I have a few buddies who enjoy RPGs. It's time for one in particular to look for life outside of Azeroth. I have one question for the old regulars here, though, how much does it really matter to the developer if a bunch of us preorder the game or not? Does it even help them? Gotta support developers who put out the goodies you enjoy, but doesn't it really matter? Tell us newbies what difference all this makes.
  18. for some reason, there is a ton of games on steam that are free to play. They're all short little adventure games like Disturbed. I've been getting them because I can often only play in short little bits and I find them entertaining for what they are. I also bought Sunless Sea. Just like the idea of the game. Morbid with some Greater Old Ones flavor of weirdness to the story. Haven't played yet, though. When I get the chance today I will.
  19. I would complain about people not wanting to play multiplayer, and I have in the past, but the fact is I'm the guy who doesn't want to do multiplayer. I've been in a few gaming guilds for FPSes and WoW and whatnot. It's not that I'm anti-social. I'm quite social in real life. I just don't want to arrange my schedule around online gaming. Now, I used to have lan parties where gaming friends would come to the house and we'd all drink beer, eat snacks, and game. I would do that more if scheduling weren't a pain, but meeting people online and dealing with headsets and mics just isn't going to work for me nowadays. So I'm glad online gamers have something to root for in WL3, but it's just not a draw for me and it's always a worry because you never know what weird things multiplayer can do to the single player game. I've never played D:OS, single or multiplayer, so I have no reference.
  20. I think running into the codex (or anything that requires an intel check) is worse with Meri. Not just because she's extremely stupid, but because I've always thought it some smarts to be a really good rogue. Just shows you how dumb I am. Doesn't bother me, though. They had to balance the game and I like the spread of the other stats.
  21. I don't know. The sucker in me looked over the pledge tiers. Most of it I can't really use. I doubt I step foot in the forum and if I do I don't want a badge. I won't have as much time as I want to play the game, and I'll use that time to play the game rather than read novellas. I guess I could check under couch cushions and pick up the car to see if any coins fall out when I shake it. Maybe scrounge up enough money to design an item, but I don't trust myself to do as good of a job as the game designs. I count on them to have the talent I lack. If I wanted to craft a crappy game, I'd've done it years ago. I already own wasteland 2. hmmm. Still, I wouldn't mind buying the game in advance. I'm reasonably assured I'll enjoy it.
  22. Heh I had a little time to play so I figured I'd play a little more of Disturbed and came to the end. The game is weird in that there are puzzles, but the player doesn't actually manipulate anything. It's really about traveling to various location in the right order and occasionally making the choice to take a particular act at a particular time. There are some locations that will absolutely kill the PC just for walking into them at the wrong time and I seem to recall one that killed the PC for walking to it at all. However, if you're truly braindead and don't want to engage in any substantial thinking, the game's really not so bad. Personally, I can attest to the fact that it's actually kind of entertaining to play it as a sort of drinking game. Take a swig of beer every time you end up getting killed in sort of random non-sensical way. By the time you go to bed, you'll have a pleasantly fuzzy feeling in your head.
  23. Yeah, this was in the wee hours of the morning when I saw it and I didn't understand the Fig idea so I thought I'd revisit it this morning figuring it was my foggy mind that was the issue. Looking at it now, I still don't really get it. Maybe it really is a sinister money laundering scheme. Probably the Russian mafia. Before anyone gets pissed, I was just joking. The biggest thing for me, though, is the multiplayer like Nonek said. I loved Wasteland 2 and I don't see how in any way multiplayer would make that experience better. On the other hand, I loved Wasteland 2, so I'm still going to keep this one on my radar. Since, I'm definitely tiny potatoes, being poor and all, I think I'll hold off on backing. They're apparently already funded.
  24. Yeah, the one ethics said. I love it when you bury a card if you acquire a boon, all boon checks are +whatever difficulty, and discard the top of your blessing deck. I'm almost certain I've seen that one in legendary on story mode, but I can't be certain. It's either that or all checks are +2, bury the boon, and discard top blessing. Something like that. It's all beatable. I normally don't care about beating everything on legendary, but since it takes a while between ADs, I end up taking multiple parties through all the legendary scenarios anyway.
