Let me be serious for a moment. I'll be your Dutch uncle with unsolicited advice that you can take or leave. I read the political thread quite a bit. I've been lurking around here for a long time and I read a lot of what people write. Sometimes I get irritated by what people post in the political thread. Sometimes I agree. Sometimes, I get food for thought. For example, Pidesco had a great post about gun culture in the United States recently. I don't agree with his conclusions, but I don't entirely dismiss them either. Thing is, I'm a spectator, and so I don't have a right to complain. You seem invested. You want to fight it out, but you've gotten knocked around and the prevailing views in the politics thread are certainly not akin to yours. So, give yourself time. Pick your battles. Hone your technique. Think about strategies to address some of the tactics used against you. ...And, after all that, realize that you're going to be knocked around a bit. You can't win if you don't play. That isn't an exhortation to play, SM117. I'm a huge coward and so I rarely play myself. I guess, worse than being a coward, I'm jaded, tired, and without much time. So I generally don't play. ...But this is about you, not me. Whatever I am, it's too late and my failings too deep to rectify. You, however, need to be more of the happy warrior.There are no permanent enemies. You could disagree with someone most strenuously today and still find solidarity with them the next. You could fight bitterly against someone this morning and celebrate the release of a new game this evening. One thing about most of these communities is that people generally don't harbor lasting genuine ill-will. At least from what I've seen reading over time. If you want to stay out of the fray for a while, do it. Get perspective and some inner peace. Then, stay away if that's what you want, but don't stay away for the wrong reasons. You never know who's reading and what impact your idea might have. In Germany, we distinguish between ownership and property. Ownership means that you are the legal owner of something, property means you can also use it. Why am I telling you this? There are two articles regarding property in the German constitution. The first one, the one I want to look at right now, is article 14, which states that 1) the state grants property within certain limits and 2) that “[owning] property bears responsibility. It should always be used in a way that also serves the common good.” Because of this rationale, only hunters and sportsmen can own guns in the sense of property around here, and those are strictly regulated. Anyone else, including police, soldiers etc can only own guns in the sense of ownership, not property (at least this is how I remember it). So, if you have a gun, you’ll perhaps give it to the police to store it there. You can sell it, but you can’t use it. Police and soldiers can’t take their weapons home either. So the most dangerous weapon I could buy and use around here would probably be a crossbow. This discussion probably won’t lead anywhere. I’m guessing the cultural barriers are too high. It always seemed to me, that America assumes a very positive idea of human nature.... trusting anyone with guns. Perhaps because, aside from the civil war and the partial ethnic cleansing of the indigenous population, you didn’t have much war in your homeland. Europe of course is marked by centuries of warfare; I guess a rather cynical attitude towards human nature comes with that.

not necessarily. Look at the the south, especially the south east along the coast, of France.... divided between Mélenchon (red) and Le Pen (dark blue). And this is no speciality of this election. Those regions were communist, and literal communist, strongholds in elections for a long time; now the far right is gaining votes there as well. So why shouldn’t a reverse effect be possible in the US; deeply republican territory falling to the left. The question might not be wether sanders is too radical, but wether he is radical enough. Trump appeals to his “forgotten men and women” because he gives them a dignifying identity when their lives lack any form of dignity. This is a longing socialists and communists could, and often do, easily appeal to as well.
