I found this article on Valve's flat structure interesting. I admit that when I first read the New Hire Handbook, it sounded pretty awesome (and likely still is on some level), but I am curious what issues arise because of it. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-07-08-valves-flat-structure-leads-to-cliques-say-ex-employee This quote stood out for me:

Never assume this! Haha. i find it's very common that people to go "this is so obvious" and if everyone does that, no one notices. There's also often a host of extra information that goes in behind the scenes on beta bug reports through telemetry and whatnot, that even duplicate bugs are still useful. I know not everyone even *wants* to file bugs, but if you are wanting to file bugs don't convince yourself that a bug is not worth the effort because it's an obvious bug to you!

The Science of Why We Don't Believe in Science

I wouldn't say anime is "wildly accepted." But at the same time, a lot of stuff I like (like gaming) still isn't something I'd consider wildly accepted either. -
How publisher of you! The thing I disliked about Fargo is that he basically showed that he's more CEO than game dev himself, and came across as quite willing to say anything to get more of my money. Coupled with the excessive "us vs. them" mentality, all the while in many ways acting just like "them" does leave a bad taste in my mouth. It actually helps work against the idea of me supporting him further in the future.

Ho hooo! IIRC EA effectively did the same for console versions of games like Left 4 Dead.

I remember hearing that they got hit with surprises with a lot of source assets simply not existing anymore.

My Half-Life 2 was still a smaller box (though not just a DVD case) I think. I remember there was the gigantor boxes like BG2 had, and then they had the slightly smaller boxes.

Holy crazy! I imagine it wasn't a super easy decision for him to leave that much money on the table either. Good luck to him.

My first playthrough waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1999 ended in Nashkel mines for just this reason.

I wouldn't consider 77 a crap score personally. Maybe for the AAA titles (which seem to be on their own scales IMO), but scores in the 70s I find are often "If you're a fan of the genre, there's probably something here for you to enjoy." Which is what I would consider Endless Space. It's not my favourite 4x Space game, but it does some things really well and will definitely satisfy space empire building itches.

Why not?

Until you have an AI society of machines that are building their own AI drones, the human component is never completely removed.

British male hero and Russian female hero chiming in all the time helped make the game for me. The story is so absurd, but listening to Russian gal go "Great plan Shaundi" when the plan of go in through the front door is chaos and explosions. Shaundi gets all defensive and Russian gal is all "No no, I mean it. I like where this is going!"

Speaking of cosplayers, even Edmonton has an Animeathon! -
The 3D GTA games never really did appeal to me that much, compared to the old school top down 2D games. SR3's ridiculous over the top gameplay left me in stitches however. To be fair, however, I have only dabbled with GTA games since. I probably wouldn't have played SR3 without the co-op mode though, and the same will probably be true for SR4.

Playing far too much Crusader Kings 2....

I wouldn't count on it unfortunately.

The Science of Why We Don't Believe in Science

I'm not big on anime, but will definitely vouch for it being a lot more common in and around my life now than it was when I was growing up. Could be a Western Canadian thing? -
IIRC there ended up being feedback regarding players "gimping" themselves because a lot of potential companions used to be killable, but in doing that you lost a potential crew skill and the like.

The Science of Why We Don't Believe in Science

Weird. This is the entire abstract for me. The title of the article is "The avian benefits of wind energy: A 2009 update" Granted, it's a 2009 update, but I don't see any references to the 2006 data. Your posting history precedes you. Pointing out that windmills have a "devastating effect on the environment" because a bird got killed by one, with follow ups about how countless birds get killed and a statement that can be inferred as dismissive because oil spills are accidents and not a part of normal operation, are things that lead me to that conclusion. So I'd challenge that it wasn't so much me surmising it, but making a hypothesis with some level of support. Sarcasm is tough to detect on the internet, but your post didn't seem sarcastic, given your historic position on energy. If I was wrong, however, my mistake. For sure. Unless a car is being powered by a "clean energy source," all the warm fuzzy feelings of driving one should be mitigated because if it's being powered by a coal power plant, then ironically it can potentially be responsible for more pollution as coal (if I'm not mistaken) burns dirtier than oil. It's certainly complex, because there's a lot of opportunity costs involved. It'd shift the pollution generation from a city to presumably somewhere rural, which may be better? I don't know. I remember some of the paradox with solar power panels being stored/shipped in environmentally poor Styrofoam containers and whatnot. It's also why I'm less inclined to care as much about recycling plastic, as opposed to something like aluminum. Although unless we decide to scale back a LOT, that we have some sort of ecological impact is pretty much inevitable. From hitting animals with our cars, to windmills and tar sands killing birds, evaluation needs to be done to on what is considered acceptable, while not completely ignoring economic implications as well. -
Is that after Recchi was traded? Recchi was still a 100 point man on those teams, so I can't imagine he wasn't on top 2 before Mullen.

KOTOR2 Crafting system
alanschu replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
KOTOR 2's crafting system was probably the best crafting system I have seen in a game. -
It was Stanford. I didn't want to make it toooooooooo easy to search for

Stevens was with Lemieux. It was probably Recchi then Mullen after Mark was traded in '91-'92 season though.
