Journalism and sexism in the games industry
Blarghagh replied to LadyCrimson's topic in Way Off-Topic
It wasn't an article because who on earth writes an article about "oh by the way, that person we hate, we found out she's transgendered"? It was imgurs on the hashtag (including the same picture pre-op and same links to that website). The entire of GamerGate read it and collectively shrugged. You can probably go back a few threads and find it if you wish, it was posted here. Either way, it doesn't matter. -

Oh for god's sake, that came out back in August and nobody cared then either. Milo is a terrible journalist. -

So, there's this story about a feminist who aborted a child after finding out it was a boy circulating on the internet. It's completely unsourced (the only source is a "share to read" page that's gone down since), illogical (since they don't do abortions by the time a child's sex is identifiable) and unverifiable. Social media is eating it up like hot cakes. I find it interesting that the willingness to believe such an obvious lie is so high - that people have such a low opinion on feminism they will readily accept it without a second thought. -

No, the guy is really named that. It's not a reference. -

It's not as bad as it sounds. What's the mainstream public going to do? Shun gamers more than they did before? -

Okay, I didn't see the episode, but I was told the SVU episode had gamers in Luchador masks actually kidnapping the Sarkeesian expy for the police to save as a disempowered damsel in distress? Is that right? Because that is hilarious. -
I'm years ahead of you there. I do that and more. Hell, I took a piss in their litterbox once. Stopped a lot of problems.

My cats will come over and push me with their head when they want attention. Mine don't push so much as just give full-on headbuts. Like a ram.

I like the part where she calls out gaming media about being a bunch of white men pretending they're allies to women. That sounds very much like something a #GamerGater would say. -

Dota 2 is an eSports game. Do they also complain that they can't play basketball if they're short? -

Regarding the conversation earlier on Super Hero "inclusivity", I saw this on DeviantArt. -

I don't think western media is a propoganda machine, I just think it's far too easy to cut out little bits of fact and skew public perception. This thing with Williams isn't so much self-regulation as it is pulling back someone who went too far. Esentially a sacrificial lamb on the altar of public trust. You should automatically distrust the media - there are too many ways for them to change the narrative, from editing to word choice to what images you put under a section to what time of day you air a video segment. I'm not saying that all the media is evil and trying to manipulate you, I'm saying that the simple fact of who they pick to read the news about it can already completely sway public perception of an issue. Sometimes they do it without even realizing. Video editor has a bad day and inadvertently has a slightly aggressive beat to his edit rhythm and you've got a different kind of segment. Journalist just got laid and writes about a serious issue with slightly less damning tone. Some parts of the media may be trying to actively manipulate people, I don't know, but even if it was 100% certain that this didn't happen you still should keep a healthy level of distrust simply because media producers are people, not machines, and people are fickle. This is exactly why journalistic guidelines are so important, because it's so easy to mess up. -
I didn't say it would be an action film, I'd say the trailer made it look like one. And to be honest, neither of those trailers are very representative of their films either.
-
Oh right, already forgot about that.

Well, whatever it is, it's not horror. Half the shots are someone being dragged, jumped or thrown. That seems like an action movie thing to me. The only thing missing is explosions.

Ocarina of Time was better and even that was just okay. I swear Legend of Zelda is the most overrated thing in games history. Except maybe Final Fantasy. -

Huh, I did check Kotaku myself, even turned my adblock off. Nothing. Did they seriously run out of advertisers? Of course, the moment I checked there was also an article about how Marvel has to kill off Peter Parker in the movies and make Spider-man a black guy now that they have limited rights to the character back. It's like a parody now. It's been that way for a while. Apparently the new Netflix Zelda should feature Link and Zelda as a lesbian couple. Honestly, all that fan art I've been seeing of female Link is a lot more interesting than the games have been since, well... The Adventure of Link on the NES, so hey, power to them. -

That Poltergeist trailer is absolutely terrible. It's like an action movie trailer. It made me think of R.I.P.D. more than anything scary.

Oven roasted potatoes with rosemary, beetroot and beef olive. Yum!

The ironic thing is that it shows a complete and utter lack of empathy on his part because he cannot empathise or identify with people who deal with emotions differently from how he does. He just projects his own emotions as the "correct" way and if others don't feel that way they're doing it wrong. If there's anything I learned from dealing with my own depression at the same time as my girlfriend's depression it's that people have no control over what they're feeling and shaming people for their emotions or lack thereof is extremely ridiculous. -
Was that the Topher Grace movie? I couldn't figure out what the point of that film was, though some of the scenes were amusing scenes none of it really fit together.

I saw the following: Big Hero 6 - Essentially How To Train Your Dragon as a superhero film. That is about as glowing a recommendation as I can give it. Beautifully designed and had quite a lot of heart. Not perfect, but hugely entertaining and I recommend it, especially for people who have kids because it's fit for kids but never kiddy. Oculus - Loved this horror movie. It wasn't actually that scary and had pretty much zero boo moments, but it was extremely tense and it had me guessing throughout the entire film. A lot of playing around with the nature of reality and perception. Ending was a tad disappointing but only because what came before was so interesting. The Fault in our Stars - Thought it would be dreck like all teen romance drama, but it was surprisingly earnest and heartfelt and though it got a little manipulative to pull tears from the audience right at the end, most of it was great. Also, instead of bawling like a baby I finally mastered the one manly tear thing they do in the movies.

If it turns out God is real I'll grovel like a pathetic worm. I don't know what I'll do, probably be gobsmacked beyond belief and mutter incessently about not making sense.- 488 replies
