Pre-orders and new trailer now live!
Gairnulf replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Yes, I should have said "I am getting this news "instead" of the news I would like to get". @Shevek, if the stash becomes one-way accessible when not in the Stronghold, I'll be somewhat satisfied. -
So, both him and archangel are trolling. ... yes, Gairnulf. I'm desperately trying to find a person on here able to hold two thoughts in their head at the same time -- and I'm completely failing at it. Which is really the whole plan all along. To troll people on the forum with reasonable arguments, to prove that pilfering suggestions off here is about as clever as panning for gold in a toilet. That's how insidious I really am. Well done. You've completely figured me out here. Look. In this world, it is possible to buy PoE in the store when the game comes out. I will do that and then review the game when i want. Makes sense? I wanted a refund, and I got the refund processed - because I was not comfortable with sponsoring Obsidian to make a community-designed game. I paid to the kickstarter to have Obsidian make the game, not for random weirdness to be inserted by fan request, and not for entire designs to be thrown out because some obtuse jackass on the internet doesn't intuitively spot the reason for having "interrupts". I also wanted a refund and to have the beta-codes revoked and the kickstarter privilege removed - because as it was I don't want to be on the credits, or even be known to have been part of the beta or even sponsoring the project. Which is going to go down in the short history of games-development as one of the most incredible community-developed failures we've ever seen. Does that fill a small part of the void in your minds, so we can avoid being distracted - and go back to discussing the designs again? Let's find out! I don't have time for people with issues. Welcome to my ignore list.

Sorry for my lacking of sense of humor, but I tend to become progressively less forgiving if I keep asking about good game mechanics and design decisions, such as weight limitation in inventory, and instead am being presented with "bonus" piglets. Such behavior reminds me of other companies, such that I don't like to be reminded about. -
Obligatory.

What You See Is What You Get Loot System
Gairnulf replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
But there is no such limit, thats why I'm pointing it out. As long as everything automaticly goes to the stash, even with the limited trader cash, it still stands that hoarders can just go through all traders in town and come out with thousands of coppers and "free" rare items on top. I know what you mean. I wanted to point out how wrong it is to have infinite inventory. -
What You See Is What You Get Loot System

Lol, I didn't know that :D I thought it stupid enough that I can even see it, as if every merchant will show me exactly how much cash he has. Exactly! Sorry. Arrows, bolts, bullets, etc, are endless in PoE. I was one of those people who wanted them to be finite, btw. Now infinite ammo is just horrible. What is this, Dragon Age?! -

Th estrategy you describe would not be possible if there were limits to the inventory size. Even the way it is now, merchants have a fixed amount of cash, so you can't sell all the loot you vacuum off enemies. -
What You See Is What You Get Loot System
Gairnulf replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
The question of what and how much loot is dropped is connected to the item/weight limitations of the inventory. Since that system is in a messed up state, and we have a LIMITLESS inventory, it is only normal that the devs are trying to limit the loot that it's possible to vacuum from enemies in the first place, to prevent the natural practice of exploiting a badly concieved function such as a limitless inventory. -
What You See Is What You Get Loot System
Gairnulf replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
The concept that enemies should only drop useful loot leads to the conclusion that any loot dropped is useful, which eliminates good uncertainty from the game. If I know any loot is usefult, I'll just vacuum all loot I come across without looking at it. I want to be curious when checking out loot - wil I find something useful, interesting, expensive, or not. -
My advice is stay away from DAI. I've been playing it for 30 hours now and the good laughs I got (unintended by the game) are not worth the money, whatever your currency.

100% agree. -
Sorry for being a lazy mf, but does anyone have a quote from a developer saying they are satisfied with the AI and they don't plan to improve it until release? Because I can't seem to understand this whole argument spanning a few threads where one guy says "the AI sucks", the other giy says "no, it's just fine", as if it has reached some finalized state. To the best of my knowledge, the combat AI is not up for review yet. Or am I mistaken?

I can say I know this from experience. I had set out to rebalance Europa Universalis IV for better historicity in the late 15th - mid-16th century period, and this was in september-october 2013, while they were still releasing patches of their own, adding features, adjusting AI, fixing, rebalancing things... I gave it up and spent more time researching (learned a lot of stuff for the period though) while waiting for an upcoming expansion dlc to be released. They released it but I had lost interest by that time, which was good, because they released another expansion recently and I would have gone mad If I had to scrap my work again. So yeah, rebalancing stuff while features are still being added is like writing with a stick in water. I understand this as "this is not the beginning of the end, but it may be the end of the beginning". (I'm prety sure it was Churchill, not Gandalf who had said it.

I wish they would just release it. Who wants to exit PoE anyway
-
Nope, but I start Steam every now and then

Just for the heck of it, let's compose an AI's behavior in pseudocode. 1. AI turns hostile (Observation) 2. Evaluates enemies (Orientation) 2.1 Calculates distance from self to every enemy 2.2 Enemies are ordered in an ascending list by order of their damage 3. Decides which enemy to attack, and preforms the action (Decision and Action) 3.1 If the AI has ranged weapons (incl. spells that damage a single target): 3.1.1 If there are no melee-equipped enemies within a given distance of the AI, the AI attacks the most dangerous enemy with its ranged weapons 3.1.2 If there are melee equipped enemies too close to the AI, the AI checks if it has any melee weapons of its own 3.1.2.1 The AI has no melee weapons, and runs away from the nearby melee enemy. 3.1.2.2 The AI has melee weapons but decides he has no chance against the closing enemy and runs away (this decision can be based on stuff like hitpoints difference between AI and enemy, weapon properties, armor, etc.) 3.1.2.3 The AI has melee weapons and switches over to them and starts fighting in melee with the closing enemy 3.2 If the AI has no ranged weapons and nobody is attacking him 3.2.1 Attacks the enemy who is attacking his nearest buddy 3.2.1 Attacks closest enemy You can get this as much more complicated as you want, for example the AI may want to evaluate if any of his friends who are being attacked have lots of health left and not come to their help, choosing to attack some other enemy instead. Within such a scheme, a kiting enemy can be described for the AI as an enemy who breaks engagement, and the AI can decide to do something different than chase that enemy. I mean kiting is not unavoidable.

I use my girlfriend as a test subject. She hadn't played RPGs or been exposed to computer games in general before a year or so, but she likes reading fantasy. She immediately dissected the DA setting and said it borrows from at least three different fantasy authors by the time I had explained her the premise of DAO. Upon playing the Beta (the v333 beta, mind you) she declared PoE has good writing and sucks you in, but by the time it took her to finish the prologue she thought DA:I was dull, although she likes roaming the Hinterlands for now. BTW, I like the tone of PoE's writing myself, I think it sounds more mature and down to Earth than BG's for example. (I don't aim to get the first post in every new page, it's just a coincidence )
