  1. Taking this week off. I meant to get some work done around the house but I just can't get motivated. I have gotten a fair bit of writing done on my book project. One thing I've found is that when you get rolling it just flows easy. The hard part is getting rolling. I guess writing is like running a diesel engine.

  2. I actaully tried to fomulate an intelligent response to Lord of Flies latest ax grinding thread but when I saw no one else bothered to I figured what the hell, why should I? Posting to him is like trying to teach a pig to sing, it wastes everyones time and is doomed to failure in any event. Besides we already had a guy around here who posted long, nonsensical rants about how the world would be such a better place if all Americans and Jews of any nationality were dead. Speaking of which does LoF remind anyone of Yushaa? His schitck got old pretty fast too.

  3. Watched the Rays get absolutely stuffed yesterday. Baseball isn't much fun when your team is getting totally shut down. They did show a little life in the 9th and made it interesting, but not interesting enough. At least the took two of three from Texas and gained a game on the Sox.

  4. Finished the first two days of school. I had this idea to greet each student as they came in the door this year in an effort to learn names faster. The first thing I learned is that only about 1 in 10 middle schoolers know how to give a firm handshake.

This is a pretty good idea. Learning to shake someones hand and look them in the eye is an important skill to learn. And if they can do it it goes a long was to establishing a kids self confidence.

  5. A friend of mine is running for Congress back in Florida. I spoke to him for an hour and a half last night. As much as I was glad to hear from him it brought back som pretty bad memories too. But it does make me think of how life would have turned out if I had just done a few things differently.

  6. Huge weekend for the playoff contenders. Rockies/Giants, Red Sox/Yanks Marlins/Braves and Rays/Rangers. Big win for TB last night. Who would have thought an almost no-name free agent pick up like Greg Zaun could make such a positive impact on the club. Another win against the Rangers and another Red Sox loss will make for a good night. The Rays are peaking and jut the right time.

The fish are looking for two in a row over Atlanta tonight, but with Chris Volstad on the mound, prospects are far from certain. Depends on which Chris Volstad shows up. I hope it's the one that dominated the Rockies last week and not the one that gave up six earned runs on ten hits in two innings against the Cubs.

  7. I think I speak for many of us when I cordially invite you to move to North Korea. In fact if I believed you'd do it I'd actually chip in 100 pounds for the giggles alone.

    I'm in for $100

This thread did not merit the effort you guys have invested in the responses you've written. This guys is just trying to get a rise out of you.

  8. Watching Rays-Orioles game and doing some work reviewing FAA tower licenses. Got a glass of Makers Mark and Canada Dry sitting next to me. Reminds me of that old David Allen Coe song....

    *guard dog sings...badly*

"I'm gonna live that miller high life

    Thats what I'm gonna do.

I'll be there with my hand held high when they say this buds for you.

I'm gonna win that pabst blue ribbon,

    at least I'm gonna try,

to drink canada dry before I die!"

  9. After that disasterous road trip out west the Rays finally picked up a win. It was a terrible week for sure but with two more series remaining against the Yankees and Red Sox they still control their own destiny. But their chances of playing in October have fallen considerably.

The Faboulous Fighting Fish of South Florida are just rolling! They play a double header today at home against Colorado who they have just owned this year, plus the Phillies were kind enough to lose last night and will have their hands full with Atlanta today the Marlins could end the day one game back!

  10. Just woke up. I tried to make coffee but there is none. I tried to make breakfast but I'm out of everything, almost. I do have plenty of dog food but I'm not that hungry... yet. I do have beer though. Good stuff too, Samuel Adams Summer Ale. I dank one standing in front of the 'fridge. I took two more out to the porch and sat on my rocking chair and drank them while the dogs ran around and did their business. I brought two more to my desk where I now sit.

Marlins and Rockies play at 1:30 and I've got a nice buzz going. It's gonna be a great day!

  11. There is no bigger dog lover around here than me and I say let him play. He served his time, he's square with the house again. I dare say he won't do it again. Even in his prime he was not half the QB McNabb is so I doubt #5 is feeling any pressure. And if Vick does something spectacular that leads to a win that will go a long way to muting the controversy. At least among Eagles fans.

  12. The Red Sox collapse has been amazing to watch. Unfortunately Tampa is unable to take advantage because the let the Mariners beat the stew out of them last night. How 'bout them Marlins! Three game sweep of the Phillies, now just two game back! Did you know that since their inaugural season the Fish have won the World Series every seven years. The last time was in 2002!

  13. Monte has already spelled out what I think is the most logical scenario that would have led to an axis victory. I think he misses on two big points. The US would have either remained techically neutral (while covertly supporting Great Britian) or would have entered the war on the allied side eventually if Pearl Harbor had not happened. They would not have aided Germany either secretly or openly. The isolationist and anti-eurpopean sentiment in the US was nowhere near as strong as it was during WWI (if not for the Zimmermen incident the US would not have entered that war at all). Plus in 1906 Germany was just another economic power fighting over colonial trade. Hitler was the embodiment of evil and enough evidence what he was doing to jews, balkans, etc would have gotten out that even the nay sayers would have voted for war.

Here is a different way of looking at it. I think Hitlers mistake was not attacking the Russians it was antagonizing the allies and invading France/Holland/Belgium/etc. Had he invaded Russia immediately after Poland without aggression against France, England, or the low countries does anyone thing the allies would have stopped him. As I understand it the only reason for invading the USSR was to gain control of the oil fields around the Black Sea and northern Persia. Had he done that and bided time to consolidate the conquest and rebuild the army Germany would have been able to counter the Aliies biggest advantage, economic superiority.

I do think most of you are dead on in the anlysis that the Axis war was a doomed enterprise from the get go because the ultimate goals of Mussolini, Hitler, and Tojo were different and as an alliance the Axis was not capable of acting in any real cooperative fashion. The Allied powers were and did.

  14. I broke one of my toes yesterday (it was the piggy that got gypped on the roast beef). I dropped a godd***ed miserable fu****g 2X6 on it. I think some of you might have heard me cursing when it happened. So that brought all of the household projects to a screeching halt. So today i spent the whole day drinking Sam Adams Summer Ale and watching the directors cut of Fellowship and Two Towers. After eight hours of that I was pretty LOTR'ed out. Now I'm going to microwave some fish sticks, play OOTP Baseball and maybe get some writing done. Maybe. More likely I finish my last two beers, break out the Knob Creek and bring this evening to a short but happy conclusion.

One a side note I find it incredible that the dogs never stepped on my feet until now.

On another side note this (plus a little veterinary episode last week) has left me with some fascinating observations on Health Care. But I completely agree that this is not the forum for it.

  15. he's mad, however, because the tooth fairy only gave him four bucks for his four teeth. he wanted a thousand dollars. yes, a thousand. i informed the little **** that the tooth fairy doesn't have a thousand dollars and he replied that the tooth fairy has a magic wand. the tooth fairy doesn't have the magic job, i thought to myself. six... it'll only get worse. :)

    taks

Four buck is pretty good. When I was a kid I only got a quarter!

Great rant on the self destruction going on in Pittsburgh. The Marlins have had three big fire sales over the years, two resulted in the utter dismantling of championship teams. Eight years later they are a much stronger and deeper franchise that plays consistently good baseball has hve for several seasons. Sometimes rebuilding is not a bad thing. It saves money and may produce a winner later on. However, if it is only done to save money with no real eye for the future the result is the Pittsburgh Pirates.

  17. Democracy without democratic institutions is pointless. By tearing down the institutions of democracy, primary of which is a free press, Chavez is destroying the democratic process without which democracy itself is dead. The people voted for Chavez and he is popular among them from all accounts. However, the people aren't just voting away their personal freedom by supporting Chavez. They're voting away their neighbors' freedom as well as the liberty of future generations. People should have a right to choose their leader, but that leader should not have the right to take away their choice, which is what Chavez is currently doing in Venezuela. One group of people should never be allowed to vote away the rights of their descendants.

One man, one vote, one time does not equal democracy.

*Guard Dog stands up and applauds!*

Very well said! In fact I can think of a few other nations here in the western hemisphere the same could be said about.

  18. Based on Krezzie's link the situation appears to be mostly an attempt to deal with youth crime more than anything. Mostly by trying to keep kids in school and out of trouble.

As I understand it, Britain has had a problem with youth crime for quite a few years now and they appear to be getting somewhat desperate to try and fix the problem.

So you think such invasive government action is justified?

I don't think it will work. SO it's probably a waste of time and money.

Seconded. The more cameras you put up, the more difficult they are to monitor.

My wife teaches at a school with CCTV up around campus. It's in a rough part of town, they have a lot of gang problems. I consider them a blessing, my wife has been assaulted twice over the last 4 years and had some pretty nasty stuff written about her in graffiti. Thankfully the assaults were only a shove, but having the camera's around give me some comfort that hopefully it will never escalate past that.

That reminds me of a joke about teachers deserving combat pay. It's not so funny when you hear about it from somone who has actually experienced it. If I were her I'd keep a can of mace on the key chain, a stun gun in the purse and a Louisville Slugger under the desk. And a .38 in the car.
