I got my driver's license today!
Good deal. Now you need a car, got one in mind?

Just one more thought on this and I'll let it go. The Democrats have a super-majority in congress. They own it. The Republicans are absolutely irrelevant. They cannot filibuster or outright defeat anything. They could no more stop the Dems from passing this than they can stop the sun from rising tomorrow. There are three bills in the House and one in the Senate that do everything Obama wants including a government run public option. If this was such a god damned good thing then why have they not passed one yet? Heck they will not even allow a vote on it yet. Why? Becase they cannot even get all of the Democrats to go along with it. You don't need a singe Repub vote but when 1/3 of your own god damned party knows it stinks maybe you need to take another look at it before ramming it down everyones throats.

@GD:
Just because Obama wants something to be more extreme than you do doesn't mean you have to go that far. Take the system as far as you want and then exert the checks and balances. You're setting up your own straw man*!
Not only does he want it he outlined exactly how to get it and is following his plan to the letter. For this example only, suppose he gets what he wants, a public plan to "compete" with private companies. This public plan is ostensibly not-for-profit and has no fiduciary responsibilities since if it runs short on cash the government simply gives it an infusion of cash by raising taxes, or worse simply printing the money as Obama has been wont to do this past year. Private companies cannot simply invent funds so they are already operating against an unfair advantage. Included in his plan is a law FORCING everyone to have insurance. There are a myriad of federal laws regulating insurance companies and what they can sell to whom and where. For example, if I wanted to buy my own plan there are over 1600 individual plans out there, I am only allowed to by 2-3 of them. So if the ones available are cost prohibitive I am forced onto the "public" plan. And you had better believe the big government hacks are savvy enough to ensure most people will be forced into that option by all means fair or foul. So once again, anyone can be placed on the public plan but the government who owns the public plan gets final say who the insurance companies can and cannot sell to. Once again, a very unfair advantage. Finally, because it has no fiduciary responsibility the public plan can undercut the private companies which will entice employers to drop private coverage and the coup is complete. Private companies go under, the government takes over and now by God they own you. Health care is the ultimate back stage pass into everyones lives. Want to outlaw smoking, drinking, scuba diving? They now have "vested financial interest" in your health and they will extrapolate that into the power to dictate how you live your life. I am not saying Obama wants to or will do all of these things but somewhere down the road someone will and all the groundwork needed will have been laid. No thank you. Not in my country.
A very wise man once told me that the most intelligent way to look at government is to examine all of the factions and imagine what would happen if each of them got everything they wanted. Once you've done that you support the one that scares you the least. Obama and his ilk scare the hell out of me.
Big Daddy Don Garlits told me that when I worked for him on his 1994 congressional campaign.

you're close enough... think st. louis.
taks
Actually I am a little bit of a Cards fan because the Redbirds, ther AAA affiliate are right here in town and I've been to almost a dozen games this year. But old loyalties die hard.

You might never sleep again.
clearly something ole taks ain't gonna try. i already don't sleep... something like this would be negative sleep.
taks
Well, at our age that drink might cause heart failure. Either way the claim holds true. Once you pass 40 who has time to waste sleeping. I'll sleep when I'm dead. Just ask the local coyotes.

The "slippery slope" idea is not stupid but I honestly can't see America sitting there and accepting a completely socialist government. If anything too extreme happened most people would be up in arms (although many already are). I just think that giving it a chance before screaming "He's turning us into Socialists!" is a good idea.
Awsomeness, please do me a favor and watch this video with an open mind. Remember, a law that seems innocouos or even benevolent today can be used to strangle you somewhere down the road.

afternoon/evening picnics are win
in fact i never actually made it home - did an all nighter and came straight to work
dosing myself up on caffeine, so hopefully wont crash part way through the day
There is dirnk called a Truckers ****tail you can try. Take a large cup (as big as you can get) put in a 5-hr energy shot (use 3 vitamin B caps 1 no-doz and a little apple juice if they don't sell those down there), 1 can of Red Bull and fill the rest of the cup with Mountain Dew soda. You might never sleep again.

Just looking over the schedule, even if the Fish keep winning, I don't see how they can make up the five games they trail the Rocks. Major bummer. The Bucs are not looking good this year, Panthers either. I'm trying to adopt the Predators but just can't make myself do it so far. I actually used to go to Panthers games, I can't break the attachment and pull for a team I've never seen just because they are the "local" team. Gonna be a blue winter for me. Go Gators!

Why does it have the EU flag on it?
Hmmmm. Isn't the EU supposed to be a union of sovereign states loosley organized under a weak central government? Isn't that by definition.... a confederacy?
-
Just because you're free to offend people doesn't mean that you should. If they wish to do honour to the men who fought in a specific tone, surely a statue would be a subtler way to do it?
Hopefully as grist to the mill: how would people feel if the 'sons of loyalty' decided to fly a whopping 160 ft Union Jack in Boston?
They would probably pull in wondering where the new British Pub was!

No kidding Gfted. A plurality of Americans have stood up an said "NO!" to a government run health plan. And the best part is most folks recognized Obamacare was step towards full government control of health care, and that is just a step to nationalization of property, which is just another step to socialisim. Not in my country, no way.
Just because I walk to my door doesn't mean I'm on the road to Damascus, mate. Seriously, you talk as if national healthcare means you have to learn the internationale and wear a boiler suit. It clearly doesn't.
Suppose you liked Damascus. Suppose you always wanted to not just go to Damascus you wanted to take everyone else with you. Suppose you always told eveyone Damascus was where it was at and if we just took a few steps we'd be on our way there. Then suppose you kidnapped me and threw me in the car should I not be worried we were going to Damascus? Obama has surrounded himself with socialists and in the case of Van Jones an outright self proclaimed communist. He has always been a vocal supporter of single payer health care which is de facto socialisim at least as far as health care goes. He has also publicly stated that the transition to single payer will involve a public option to compete with private and then begin moving everyone over to it until there is no private option. He has flat out said these things and you know it. I am a big believer in the domino theory and I don't want him or any of his despicable ilk knocking that first domino that leads to socialsism. That does not mean the federal government does not have some role to play in healthcare but by God they will NOT be allowed to run it. We will not have it. If they vote it in, we'll vote them out. What one congress does another can undo.
You should watch that video I linked a few posts back.

So, since the very idea of govermental single-payer is out of the window, how about the Swiss model?
1) Healthcare insurance companies exists, there's no public option.
2) The swiss can freely choose which insurance company that they like.
3) Healthcare insurance companies are by law, forbidden to deny to pay for their client's treatment (certain exceptions may exists for plastic surgury)
4) Every swiss over the age of 18 have to, by law, have a healthcare insurance.
5) Monthly payments are regulated by law, not to exceed a certain procent of the client's income.
Practically universal healthcare for every citizen. Sounds bad or good?
I love 1-3, no thanks on 4, 5 needs a little work but is good in principle.

Okay, I admit I know jack about CSA flags, but the article does mention the "Stars and Bars" flag. And according to Wiki, the Stars and Bars is the flag you posted - not St. Andrew's Cross or whatever.
Thats the problem, too many people don't know what X flag really is and would not recognize the real one if it fell on them. Heck i nearly got into a fight once because I told a guy (redneck type) that the flag in his truck window was not the real thing.

I think the Pirates are now where the Rays were in 2004.

The i's are dotted, t's are crossed and a 139-foot flagpole is ready to fly the Stars and Bars over one of the busiest highway interchanges in Florida.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans in Tampa plan soon to raise what they claim is the world's largest Confederate flag on a private triangle of land tucked near where Interstates 75 and 4 meet. The flag measures 50 feet by 30 feet.
John Adams, commander of the organization's Florida division, has spearheaded the flag project, which includes plans for an accompanying memorial park. And he wants to make sure that the only objections the group faces are based on opinion, not the law.
"You're going to hear some complaints about it for sure," Adams said. "But it's a free country as far as I know."
To some, particularly across many Southern states, the rebel flag represents a rich heritage that includes fighting and dying for the Confederate cause during the Civil War. To others, the flag represents dark memories attached to slavery and racial inequality.
One of those people is Curtis Stokes, president of the NAACP in Hillsborough County, who hopes that a groundswell of opposition to raising the flag might convince the Sons of Confederate Veterans to reconsider.
That's an unlikely scenario, according to Adams. Nearly a decade ago, the 220 members in the state's Sons of Confederate Veterans group launched a project called "Flags Across Florida" in response to a decision by state officials to remove the Confederate flag from a place of prominence near the state capitol in Tallahassee.

I'm curious what everyone here thinks. I expect the non-US types here will find the whole controversy a little silly (and they would be right) but I've never met an American who did not have an opinion on this issue. Does anyone actually find the "Confederate Flag" offensive?
Personally, they bought the land and built the pole, they can fly whatever flag they please but I'm curious about one thing, if you want to fly the Confederate flag, why are they not doing it? Thats right, the St. Andrews Cross flag was never the flag of the CSA. This was:
If you want to honor history, be historical. I have a feeling these guys are just trying to get a rise out of everyone. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Congress may ram it down our throats anyway, we need to keep the pressure on. I read somewhere that there are over 1600 seperate individual health plans being sold in this country but federal law prohibits insurance companies from selling to just anyone any where. If they want to reform healthcare, how about starting there?

The coolest thing about those golden orb spiders is their web, bloody strong and everything sticks to it. So you take a Black Cat fire cracker with a long fuse, light it and toss in in their web, right about the time the spider gets there to see what it caught...POW!
Two nights no Coyotes. I still hear them near by but they are leaving my stuff alone. I guess that validates the saying that there are no problems that cannot be solved by proper use of firepower.
-
Last night they started up again. I slid my shotgun out the window and fired twice into the air. Dead silence after that. We'll find out tonight if that persuaded them to go elsewhere.

Cuba
Cuba is not totalitarian huh. Obviously you have never actually met someone from Cuba. Even if you did you would probably dismiss them as a liar once what they told you did not conform to your narrow little ill informed world view.

Isn't it amazing the communist regimes are only created at gunpoint, and the first thing they ALL do is kill everyone who opposed them and try to kill everyone who leaves. You know that Berlin Wall was built to keep people in, not out.

Bucs trade McCown to Jags. Looks like we are stuck with left foot Leftwich. For better or worse. Let's hope for better. This is gonna be a loooong season.

They should have kept Garcia. Morons.
Agreed. I'm pretty sure Garcia will be starting for the Raiders by week 5.
They're not giving up on Russel aready are they?
Well, if they go 1-3, it will be a little hard to justify not going with a proven NFL QB like Garcia.
And they will go 1-3, it's the Raiders after all.
Well, you might be half right. They cut Garcia.

Thats it. They Rays are done. Stick a fork in them and turn out the lights at Tropicana, it's over. No, they are not mathematicly eliminated. Far from it. But over the past three nights we have taken full measure of their heart and found it wanting. The Tigers are cruising, they have nothing to play hard for, and they barely broke a sweat beating the Rays twice already. The Rays again watched a mediocre starter give way to a horrible bullpen and once again a late game lead evaporated into a heartbreaking loss. At least for fans it was heartbreaking. The Twins, White Sox, and Rangers all are fighting to get in, and playing well. Playing with heart. The Red Sox are playing well. They are playing like a team that knows how to win. The Rays.... they're done. The fire from last year is gone. The Rays of sun are hidden and the Devil has come back to Tampa. They might just as well break out the old green uniforms for the rest of the season.
Now the Fish, that is a whole different story. There is a hungry team that is fighing to win games. Just four games behind the Giants & Rockies and nine of their next twelve are against the Mets and the Nationals. I'm liking this!

You wouldn't happen to be a reader of Saul Alinski would you Junai?
It doesn't matter. Also reminding him the the Vincennes was protecting US flagged oil tankers that had been attacked several times by Iranian gun boats (as had the Vincennes) and buzzed by Iranian F-14s. It also would not help to point out to Junai that Iran Air 655 had switched off it's IFF (deliberate or not, ordered too or not we'll never know) so there was no way the cruiser could identify it was a civilian aircraft. Junai has this whole thing set in his mind US=bad, everything else=good.
Huge Confederate Flag to Fly Over Tampa
