  1. Over my dead twitching corpse would that go on here. I can't see any freedom loving Brit allowing this crap to take place but I fear most will think it's someone elses problem so long as it's not happening to them and the rest would demand the cameras be streamed on the web.

  2. This clown is someone's alt. I thought it might be Pop at first but he's not angry enough and not smart enough. He's too smart to be Sand and too motivated to be a few others I could think of. Keep posting flies, everyone on this board has a tell and yours will come out. I'm betting you don't believe a word of your screed, in fact you are probably someone who visits the board occasionally and got drummed out of a few debates with some of the others here. Or as Monte said you are just trying to get a rise out of everyone.

  3. So far Texas, Oklahoma, Alaska, Idaho, North and South Dakota, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Louisiana have all passed resolutions asserting state sovereignty...

That bull**** again? Don't they know that the Civil War effectively ended the main backing of the "States' Rights" movement? :p

Hardly. Ever heard of the 10th Amendment? Personally I'd rather see the US break up than abandon Federalisim. And I am most certainly not alone. But I'd really rather see the government restrain itself to is Constitutionally defined role and never even have this discussion.

  4. Now reading The Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong. A little slow going because it was translated from Chinese (which makes the prose a little clumsy at times) but the story is great. I highly reccomend this one.

  5. The Rays got all over KC last night. That was nice to watch.

Boston made the biggest splash at the trade deadline. Picking up Victor Martinez was huge.

Kelverin, are you happy with what the Padres got for Peavy? Seems a little light for a Cy Young quality pitcher to me.

  6. I've been very busy lately. With work, my side business, plus I've been working on writing a book. I started gathering research material when I was laid up earlier this year. Last month I actually started writing. I thought it would ne easy. It is not. Anyway, the book is about Dog Rescue and the people who do it.

  7. The representation of politics in America is a reflection of the political leanings of America.

Why do you disagree, by the way? It has been vindicated by about every major power in the world ever.

I think Pidesco is right on both points. Notice that Obamas popularity has plummeted (very uncommon for a President at only six months) as he has moved to the left. And you guys are right, he is only a leftist in the American political sense. In the scope of world politics he is slightly right of center. I keep pointing out to all or you that the US is a very different thing politically than any other country in the world. We have some very different ideas about what the role of the federal government should be. I don't think you guys get that we are a union of 50 sovereign states. Since taking office Obama has done a lot to centralize power in Washington even to the point of usurping power from the State governors and legislatures. It is not possible to pursue an agenda of "soft socialism" without asserting central government power in ways the US Constitution specifically prohibits. He has and the majority of the voters are growing restless about it. That is why news stories like this have been popping up:

So far Texas, Oklahoma, Alaska, Idaho, North and South Dakota, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Louisiana have all passed resolutions asserting state sovereignty and demanding the federal government restrain its self to the powers granted under the constitution. Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Missouri, Ohio, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona and Kentucky have all passed similar resolution out of one of the two state legislatures and it is expected it will pass the other shortly. These resolutions have been ,by and large, very popular with the voters in these states. I only bring this up to point out that we are very different from the rest of the world and I know that seems to frustrate many of you (I could not guess why, no one here in the US gives a damn about whether the government of Australia for example is right or left). Yes Obama is a leftist only in the American sense but it seems he is too left for us. If he is smart (and I believe he is) he will do as Clinton did and move back to the center and stay there. Then he will probably have a successful presidency and probably get a second term. If he does not get the message he will end up like Carter and be sent home in 2012. For the sake of my country I devoutly hope it will be the former.

  8. It figures, Mark Buehrle thows a perfect game, not against the Yankees or Red Sox but against the Rays. I don't know which I hate more, the fact that he did it against my team or the fact that in the 8th I was actually pulling for him to do it.

  9. I tried that (home brewing) a few times. I never could get the carbonation right. It was always either too much (beer flavored soda) or too little (flatter than spit).

I just got home from a seminar in Nashville with the FAA. I ran into someone I knew from Cingular who now works for Uncle Sam. We ended up hitting a few strip clubs and were both bleary eyed during the seminar the next day. I the hotel that night left with two fifties in my pocket, the next day I had a handful of singles left.

  10. Now reading The Deerslayer by James Ferimore Cooper. I'm not a big fan of classics per se but I've always wanted to read this one. Also reading Lee by Douglas Southall Freeman, a biography of General Robert E Lee.

  11. I'm pretty excited that Aaron Sorkin was hired to save the Moneyball movie.

I didn't know about that. Thats great news because it would make an interesting movie. Although Brad Pitt as Billy Beane is a stretch.

  12. Curious that you led the thread title with "Obama" given that he's not mentioned at all in the linked article, and that government studies are pretty slow moving animals, which means that this one was probably commissioned well before his inauguration. It's a recommendation from an internal Pentagon/VA health group, not an official statement of administration policy.

No actually he was not directly involved in this but in two of the articles over the weekend including the CNN one which I can no longer find, the study was completed last year then apparently shelved until Sebelius started pushing it. She is his HHS secretary. He is the CIC of the military. He does smoke. He is responsible for actions taken on his behalf by his cabinet affecting institutions he has direct control over.

  13. Excerpt:

U.S. soldiers are trained to handle deadly weapons and smoke out enemies but they may soon find that they aren't allowed to handle cigarettes and light up a smoke.

Pentagon health experts are pressing Defense Secretary Robert Gates to ban the use of tobacco by troops and ends its sale on military property, according to USA Today.

Jack Smith, head of the Pentagon's office of clinical and program policy, told the newspaper that he will advise Gates to adopt proposals by a federal study that cites rising tobacco use and higher costs for the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs as reasons for the ban.

The study by the Institute of Medicine calls for a phased-in ban over a period of perhaps up to 20 years.

"We'll certainly be taking that recommendation forward," Smith told the newspaper.

The VA and the Pentagon requested the study, which found that troops worn out by repeated deployments often rely on cigarettes as a "stress reliever." The study also found that tobacco use in the military rose after the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began.

Tobacco use costs the Pentagon $846 million a year in medical care and lost productivity, according to the study, which was released last month and used older data. The Department of Veterans Affairs spends up to $6 billion in treatments for tobacco-related illnesses, the study found.

The study recommends requiring new officers and enlisted personnel to be tobacco-free, eliminating tobacco use on military installations, ships and aircraft, expanding treatment programs and eliminating the sale of tobacco on military property.

"Any tobacco use while in uniform should be prohibited," the study said.

I'm curious what everyone thinks here. I have my own opinion on this of course but before I elaborate I'd like to hear from you guys first. I think this story is very telling about more than just banning smoking in the military. I do find it a little ironic that Obama wants to take tobacco away from other people but has no inclination of giving it up himself.

  14. Obama to join Fox broadcast booth for All-Star Game

God, can we please have at least one thing this misereable, worthless, son of a b**** does not try to seize control of and subvert for himself. One of the appeals of sports is to take your mind off of your other worries, like the miserable state of the country for example. Seeing him spout his screed and the commentator kiss his a** will certainly ruin that.

  15. I saw my Nephew play last night over in Greenville. That is a nice little town. Anyway, he got in on a PH in the 7th and struck out in 4 pitches. But it was great to see him in there. I got a cool pic of it that I sent to his parents.

  16. I don't think mkreku meant that as a serious rebuttal, though..

Ah you're right. Sorry Mkreku, I've just been in a rotten mood lately. I guess it's because my birthday is coming up.

  17. Interestingly, pro football players are some of the best conditioned athletes overall, barring gymnasts. I guess that must be just for show.

    fat_fb_player.jpg

Umm... that is not pro football Mkreku. That looks like HIGH SCHOOL football. You know, unpaid teenagers. I realize you an not from the US or have ever even set foot in it (which is amazing considering how much you criticize with so little understanding) but I thought even you could tell the difference.

  18. If I were in charge of Baseball the DH would be the very first thing I'd get rid of. The Rays-Blue Jays game ran over four doggone hours tonight. This crap just does not happen in the NL (as often). At least the Rays won.

  19. God knows how we never get tired of hearing people on this board complain about and insult America.

Anywho. SI.com is reporting that the Pirates are about to trade Freddy Sanchez and Adam LaRoache to the Giants for prospects. Sanchez would be an immediate help to SF but I'm not sure LaRoache is much of an upgrade over Ishikawa. The funny thing is, SF could make a serious run with their pitching and these two might provide just enough offense to matter.

  20. I find baseball boring as hell. Except when I watch it with my dad. Then it's cool just to shoot the breeze with the ol' guy!

I think that is one of the appeals of the game. It does have a slower pace but that allows for conversation. It also lends itself to comparing eras. For example if a 28 year old Mickey Mantle were placed on the Yankees today he would still be a great player, where in Hockey for example if a 28 year old Gordie Howe were placed on the Red Wings today he'd barely make the third line. Jim Thorpe was one of the best football players in history (for his era). He would have no shot of making an NFL team today. Baseball is so much more connected to it's history than any other sport.

It takes a real fan to watch a game alone. Heck I am a fan and more often than not I catch the games on my XM radio while working on other things. But like you said, watching a game with another fan, that is fun.

  21. Just watched the Marlins beat the Pirates to take that series 2-1. Did you know that the Marlins have won the world series every six years since their inception. The last time was in 2003. I'd hate to see that streak end. Go Fish!

  22. I thought even Americans found baseball boring.

Heck put a handful of Americans in a room and you'd have a hard time getting them all to agree that rain is wet. But I like baseball.
