  1. Happy Father's Day to @Hurlshot, @Gfted1, @Enoch, TN (where the heck has he been lately?) and all the other dads out there I'm forgetting or just don't know ARE dads.
  2. Did some shooting with my new CVA Optima muzzleloading rifle today. Mainly fine tuning the scope. I bought a Burris XTR 25×50 for it. With 110 gr of powder and a .50 projectile I was seeing muzzle velocity of 1950 fps. But with a .30 in a plastic sabot it was over 2200 fps. The scope is marked for .50 up to 300 meters and .30 up to 480m. At 100m with a bench rest I was shooting 2" groups. A little wider at 300m so obviously there is still work to do.
  3. The International Association of Professional Baseball Players was a minor league circuit that operated in Canada & the USA from 1877 to 1880. Some famous minor league teams played in this league like the Syracuse Stars and Buffalo Bisons, Two teams continued to play in other leagues into modern times. One is the Guelph Maple Leafs. They went on into the Intercounty League, the Ontario Baseball Association semi-pro league, Class D Ontario League (affiliated), then finally the amatuer summer Intercounty Baseball League where they have played in a number of small cities in Canada. They finally folded in 2017 as the Guelph Royals. The other team from the International Association is still operating. Who it is: A) London Tecumsehs B) Columbus Buckeyes C) Pittsburgh Alleghenies D) Lynn Live Oaks
  4. The thing is it's entirely plausible she would have. Or something similar. What in Hillary Clinton's history would give you cause to expect honest conduct from her? We have finally reached the point where there are no "good guys". No virtuous choices. No good. Only evil. Lesser or greater being purely in the eye of the beholder. Or, maybe we've been here a while and just realize it more now. The outcome of the 2020 election is anti-climatic. No matter who wins on January 19 2021 we will swear in a fool who should not even be allowed to preside over a watermelon seed spitting contest, let alone a country. The fact that people are fighting so hard to champion one of those fools is very depressing.
  5. Even getter. I'd like to hear what they'd say once you explained it. I was a teenager in the 80's and I'd likely said you were full of it!
  6. That's all I got
  7. The Far Side... hard to say if it was the greatest ever. Maybe a three way tie between this, Calvin & Hobbes, and Bloom County.
  8. No kidding! @Hurlshot I've never heard of anyone being injured drinking iced tea on the back porch!
  9. Nothing will save us from that but ourselves. There are things we can each do to preserve and protect the money and assets we have. Moving a portion of your investments into assets whose value is not tied to any one currency like physical commodities is a good idea. Income earning investments is a good idea. A reasonable level of self sufficiency is a good idea. Although... some of us do go a bit overboard on that one... But above all.... personal debt. Get out and stay out.
  10. Well.... you were half right at least. But as for your other point you are of course correct. The inability to handle a firearm, to focus of the process of drawing, hand weld, sight picture, sight alignment, half breath, squeeze, goes a long way to turning someone into one of Gromnir's statistics. I believe it was the British army that started the "by the numbers"drill so common in almost all military services today. I'm certain you remember it well in your own service. Learning to do a thing in a succession of movements or "counts" then drilling by repetition until they are literally second nature. The soldier/Marine does them without even thinking. Police as well I'd imagine. Focusing on the process takes concentration away from the fear/anxiety/nervousness of what is going on around you. That is how a man with a reasonable sense of self preservation can stay focused and do his job in the midst of a battle. Focusing on a practised succession of movements. As I said before, carrying a firearm is a big and multi-level responsibility. You have a responsibility to everyone around you to never, ever touch it except in the last extreme of defending life. And then you have a responsibility to use it accurately and unerringly. And that means constant practice. Both at the range and just drawing, ****ing, and dry firing until the actions are second nature. I know of no better way than drill by repetition. If someone is unwilling to do that then I strongly advise they leave their weapon at home.... preferably locked up.
  11. Maybe. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlbpa-proposes-70-game-2020-mlb-season-with-full-prorated-pay/
  12. It is a requirement of a CC Permit in a number of states. Not saying it's a good idea. A CC is not a right, it is a privilege (whether or not it should be is a different conversation) much like a drivers license. And like a drivers license having it obliges you to certain rules. It is no sin to want some agency over your own life and security. There is a popular saying among gun owners "When seconds count the police are only minutes away". I have carried a firearm off and on since I got out of the service. Not everywhere, obviously. And I make it my business to know the carry laws in every state I might drive through. A few years back I worked in Illinois for a week. I left the weapon at home. Whatever you might think of me I do have a very firm set of rules for personal conduct that I rigidly adhere to. And I am always cognizant of the responsibility of having a firearm on my person. I'm 6'4" and weight 220 lbs. I carry myself with confidence. I seriously doubt anyone will start trouble with me. I live and spend most of my time in a rural part of a state with relatively low crime. The chances of me ever needing a firearm for defense are infinitesimally small. But, they are not zero. Like I said, it's a fire extinguisher. You will never need it until there is a fire.
  13. OK, I'm just throwing this out there. June 19th 1865 is supposed to be the day when slavery ended. But it's really not. What it really was is the day the last Confederate State Government collapsed. They want to make this a national holiday but that it like calling Cinco de Mayo Mexican Independence day. It isn't. On June 20th 1865 slavery was still legal (if not widely practiced) in Delaware, Maryland, and Missouri. Slavery actually ended on December 6 1865 when the 13th Amendment was ratified. Shouldn't that be the date we make a holiday?
  14. Pre-ordered for Kindle:
  15. If one is not sufficient what use would a dozen be? The idea is to neutralize a threat long enough to get away. Not stand in a prolonged gun fight. Besides, I have a serious dislike for semi-auto action. There is a maxim among mechanical engineers. Given your education and background I expect you've heard it: "The reliability of a working machine is in direct proportion to the simplicity of it's design". In this design there is no chance of a misfire.
  16. This is my carry weapon: https://www.bondarms.com/bond-arms-handguns/ranger-ii/ Mine is the .45LC/410 version. But I bought the fully rifled barrel upgrade. When at work or other places where carrying is inappropriate I have a lockbox mounted to the floor behind the driver's seat of my truck. Otherwise, front left pocket. It fits perfectly
  17. In any interaction with the police I hand them my CC card, tell them what I'm carrying and where it is. It's not a problem. We are required to do so in some states, not in others. in mine it is a requirement. The likelihood of me being injured of killed BECAUSE I am carrying a firearm is slightly above zero. A firearm is very much like a fire extinguisher. A specific tool for a specific purpose. And it would only ever be used for that purpose. The only way anyone would even know I even have it would be to physically assault me in some fashion where I cannot get away. Under those circumstances alone would I use a carry firearm. Generally speaking if I think I'm going to need a firearm somewhere I'm not going to go. That's why you won't catch me anywhere near Memphis. Ever again if I can help it. But I'm not going to throw away the fire extinguisher just because it's unlikely I'll ever have a fire. Now, that is just my carry weapon rules. When it comes to defending my home, if I've caught someone on my property, having crossed numerous fences to be there I am far more likely to assume hostile intent and respond appropriately.
  18. So... am I the only one carrying a pistol pretty much everywhere these days? I don't much care about any of the rest of this s--t but Guard Dog's life matters.
  19. Re-read it an compare it to the events surrounding the schism and collapse of the Western Roman Empire and you'll almost be convinced he was thinking of that rather than the end of the world. Of course it was calamitous enough you might think it WAS the end of the world from a certain point of view.
  20. What MLB player holds the record for most teams played for? A) Edwin Jackson B) Mike Morgan C) Octavio Dotel D) Matt Stairs
  21. No, that WAS funny!
  22. Which MLB team has fielded the most Cy Young winning seasons? 1) Dodgers 2) Braves 3) Red Sox 4) Yankees
  23. Great analogy. I am so stealing that!
