PinkRose Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Someone else posted about this combo, bt I wasn't experiencing any synergy. She can't use her d10 roll with the Weasel because she doesn't have melee, correct?
Blave Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 As far as I know: If you use a melee weapon or no weapon at all, you use your strength skill. That counts as a melee check for card effects evenif you don't have the melee skill.
269Hawkmoon Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 (edited) Someone else posted about this combo, bt I wasn't experiencing any synergy. She can't use her d10 roll with the Weasel because she doesn't have melee, correct? Correct. Sort of. Lini can use a d4 for Melee. But for Lini, her Melee isn't based on her Strength. Her power to use a d10 only changes her Strength die. But her "unlisted Melee skill" doesn't use her Strength die. So, pretend Lini looks like this: Strength: d4 Melee: d4 If she changes her Strength die to a d10, it doesn't effect her Melee. The Melee skill is only related to the Strength skill if your character card says it is. Now, if you get Lini a Melee weapon, like the Flaming Mace +1, then you can make a nice little combo: Play Flaming Mace +1 and use your Strength skill. The weapon gives the Melee trait to the check. Reveal an animal for the d4. Discard the Giant Weasel for the d8. That works because the Weasel adds to a Melee combat check and by playing a weapon with the Melee trait to determine the skill for the check, you make it a Melee check, even if you aren't using the Melee skill. Nightfind Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I don't know what the Weasel cards says, but for Lini, she can use a D10 instead of her Strength or Dexterity die. If you are doing a Melee check, then your would be using your melee die, which for her is D4 since she does not have the melee skill. Since she does not have the Melee skill, then melee is not using a Strength or Dexterity die to roll - you are rolling a melee skill die which is D4. Lini can't substitute out a Melee die because it is not a Strength or Dexterity die - it is the untrained D4 skill die you get when using an untrained skill because she is doing a melee check. PinkRose Posted May 16, 2016 Author Posted May 16, 2016 So the concensus is that the Weasel is not helpful for Lini unless she has a weapon, correct?
Brainwave Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 If the weasel specifically gives a bonus to melee (I don't know the card) then yes. The Mace for example, has the melee trait on the side of the card so you get melee added to the traits of that check and I believe as Hawkmoon said, that this then allows you to add melee bonuses to that check without having to revert to d4s. If you find this confusing, you're not alone.
Longshot11 Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 So the concensus is that the Weasel is not helpful for Lini unless she has a weapon, correct? It can be helpfull if you encounter a week monster (Goblin Warrior let's say), and you don't think it's worthy to discard a card to morph your Strength die into a d10. Then, your roll would look like this: Melee (d4) + reveal Ally (d4 + X) + discard-but-actually-recharge-Weasel (d6) This can still be a bit risky without upgrades (an avg. of 8.5), but once you get some +1's into Animal Trick, it will save you from being essentially 'damaged' for 1 card by crappy monsters. Kgk4569 Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Nope. You can use it without a weapon, unless that is a bug. I've noticed that any check marked "Combat" seems to be melee.

You CAN use it without weapon (it should assume you're rolling your d4 Melee), but if you can use it with a naked Beast Form-ed d10 Strength - that's a bug. A Melee check is Str, and Beast form is "Roll 1d10 instead of your Str or Dex die", it doesn't change the type of check. If it said "use your wisdom instead of Str" I could understand why it is a bug. EDIT: I verified it DOES NOT work, although by the card text it should... Edited May 19, 2016 by Kgk4569
269Hawkmoon Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) Because Lini doesn't have the Melee skill. Her card doesn't say Melee: Strength + X. So for Lini, her Melee is a d4 and is unrelated to her Strength. Changing her Strength die to a d10 wouldn't change the feat that her Melee is a d4. If she uses the Weasel, she would roll d4 + 1d6.
