Question

Posted (edited)

Hello everyone.

I have downloaded and installed the GOG version of the game, but after running it, it shows Obsidian, Paradox and Kickstarter logos and immediately crashes with a message that I should send the folder with the log to the developer. So, how and to whom should I send it?

Edit: I've uploaded the folder with the log

is there any suggest ETA on a hotfix?

I doubt there will be a catch-all hotfix in the next few days. After all, the crashes are just a symptom of probelms with a wide variety of causes. Some of the crashes were related to the UNCL font, others to the Mono compiler, others were OS-dependant and some may be hardware-dependant.

ok then i´ll need to wait, since i tried all fixes which were given here. Thx for the answer.

@Ekital

thank you for your answer.

I do not think that will be the antivirus because I have disabled and it is always the same. even the firewall.

I tried your solution 1 without success. But I found the output_log.txt file and it seems that the problem is with the mono (solution 2).

Can you tell me clearly manipulations because I did not understand.
thank you very much

Hey.
My game keeps crashing when I try and enter Gilded Vale (like a lot of other people).
I've tried doing the first fix that has been suggested, and even as administrator (which is what my account is set as), I keep getting "access denied" in command prompt.
I know that all games have bugs and crashes in the opening weeks, so I'm really hoping that I'll get to play properly soon with a patch.

I'm not the most computer technical person, so most of what people are talking about are beyond my skills.
I am running Windows XP (shutup, I love it), my graphics card is only two years old, and I have 2gig of ram.

I'd actually be pretty disappointed if the only proper fix of the game would be to have a 64bit OS.

I have had the problem with the transition crashes as well, especially for Guilded Vale.

I am running Windows XP SP3 with 4gb RAM

And I managed to fix this issue for me by using this switch: http://www.maxi-pedia.com/3GB+switch+Windows+boot.ini+3+GB

The problem with crashing has disappeared completly since then.

But it requires some effort and knowledge, and please be cautious when modifying parameters that are critical to your OS.

will show up in everyone's output log. It has to do with MT and Cross compatibility for different operating systems. "GetThreadContext failed" is definitely a Unity error try attempting this fix: https://stratics.com/community/threads/if-you-get-constant-getthreadcontext-failed-crashes-this-should-fix-it.300386/

You can find mono.dll inside the Pillars of Eternity\PillarsOfEternity_Data\Mono folder. If you're using Avast, Kaspersky or NOD32 as your anti-virus then it's most likely the AV causing the crash.

===========================

@Meika,

The minimum RAM requirement for Pillars of Eternity is 4GB. 2GB is not enough to run the game properly and it is what causes the gilded vale/other ingame crashes. Unfortunately there is no good fix for this especially for a 32-bit system which is naturally restricted to only using 2GB. At your present moment you have somewhere in the region of ~1-1.5GB of useable memory, which is basically just enough to get the game running but not enough to handle the game under higher stress aka towns etc.

With your current setup there is no way you'll get past the Gilded Vale. I suggest upgrading your RAM and unfortunately switching to 64-bit. You can try adding more memory up to 4GB and using the RAM workaround that obsidian has posted however that is not really recommended.

===========================

More info:

The .Net Framework/Mono fix will only work if you notice the following line in your error.log (Not the output log):

mono.dll caused an Access Violation (0xc0000005)
  in module mono.dll at 0023:101071b5.

I'm a tad bewildered by all I'm seeing in this thread. I posted a bit ago about an issue I'm having in Linux and tacked on an optimisation question but requiring a 64bit OS and 4+ gigs of ram for a game that was possible 15+ years ago is a tad whack. I know PE use some more advanced things for lighting and character rendering but really there is no excuse for such requirements. The backgrounds are grainy when you zoom in and the 3D character painfully low quality. You can't zoom on the larger portrait view on the character sheet and it still looks like something from 1999-2001. Hell my log shows the game is only using direct X 9c from 2004!

On the machine I've been playing on (a laptop) the game cooks the machine more than playing modern FPS games (over 80 cel from 35celish under normal use). I know the old games were bad for this too. Icewind Dale could really churn you CPU but I don't see enough going on to warrant 4+ gigs of ram and nitrogen cooling. If anything they should have been able to improve upon this so we could play on netbooks or x32/x64 tablets etc. I used to play Icewind Dale II on my netbook and PE isn't that much more amazing. Just some better thought out UI and mecahanics.

I guess push come to shove I play more visually "amazing" games built on UNITY that require far far less system resources and while I'd hope a PE build on Unity 5 might help I think there is a bigger problem at play. If you see for example the render distances and complexity in "The Long Dark" (also done in Unity) there is no excuse that a flat png for a world and some tricks to make the png look three dimentional should be so bloated and demanding. I know the older games chewed CPU due to AI render ahead calculation but it was at least user definable back then. Something stinks here...

Furthering the stink is the game runs in Linux with 4gigs of ram, an i3 CPU, 5400 rpm drive and a nVidia 540M. Mean while it won't run on a core i5 with 10gigs of ram, a RAID 0 array and a Radeon R9 270x.

Actually those tricks and the way the models are built are the reason the game is demanding. It's because Unity is simply not well optimized in general.However Im going to refute some of your "points",

First of all there's no reason people shouldn't have 4GB of RAM these days.

Second of all it will run on those specs you named, you're just simply having a technical problem but you're too inept to solve it so you're blaming the game.

Third of all why bring Linux into this? It has no correlation to the discussion.

Also this is a technical support thread not a rant section so take that bs elsewhere.

I'll refute your points. Unity has issue for sure but there are several games far more impressive and demanding using less resources than PE. Despite Unity's flaws PE's demands are excessive.

"These days" many people don't give 2 sh17s about computers in general. Not all gamers are equal in their quest for "heavy iron" or quad digit frame rate supremicy. Just because you deem everyone should have something doesn't make it so and it's got nothing to do with the reality PE should not require such things even if it is common.

Obviously the game should run on my machines spec, but it doesn't. I.e. it's a bug and you point it out as a technical issue is a reduntant pointless statement. As for me being inept, doubtful. I've been an OEM for 15+ years and was probably building machine since before you were born. That being the least of my technical resume.

As for bringing Linux into it makes a lot of sense as the problem seems to only affect the Windows builds. It also illusrtates that is a lesser machine running Linux can load/run the game better there is more bloat or issues with the various libraries or systems being called on Windows builds under certain circumstances.

If I wanted to rant you'd know it. It's a question being posed about the numerous launch bugs. From saves not being cross platform compatabile (which affects Steam sync) to lockups, crashes, stat glitches and more.

I love people like you, you assume everything about the person because you feel superior to others. A 4GB stick costs 30 dollars, so please stop sticking words into my mouth. I never said people need to build amazing rigs, I was stating that 4GB has been a minimum for a few years now.

Now take this stupid ****ing discussion elsewhere if you aren't having a problem with crashing because this is what this thread is for.

Perhaps if you read you'd realize I do indeed have the crash...but only on Windows.

An OEM should be able to read stack outputs and discover what Windows libraries he needs to get it working just saying.

Given there is no stack to debug...no. In fact that has been part of the discussion. Output shows many errors and undefined things but this is the core of the problem, the game does not think it's crashing. Over the last bit I've found the the game to be inconsistent switching between no crash but no display/window, crashes, and hangs. None of dated dump the stacks as the developers outlined. I have also had the experience that if you leave the game hung long enough it will some times finally load the menu and become playable. There is no excessive CPU or RAM use and as I pointed out before the game loads consistently and quickly on a slower Linux machine but the more powerful Windows machine hangs as if it's struggling to pull resources into memory.

Being an OEM qualifies years of experience but being an OEM doesn't give you magical powers over compiled code. Unless I was to decompile or reverse engineer the game there is little to be done. Like wise with conversations talking about it being vc redist issues etc it's all closed source. Unless something is blatantly missing or corrupt there isn't much you can do short of wasting time for a job that's not yours. It's not my job to debug the game, it's Obsidians. My days of that BS are over, I'm here because I want to play a game. As part of my crashing issues I've noted many others one of which is the excessive system requirements and how it makes my laptop want to burst into flames for a game modest hardware from ten years ago should run fine. Many are quick to blame UNITY but while it's short comings are known and numerous I've also stated I've got plenty of experience with other games running on UNTY that are far more amazing visually and should require heavy iron but do not.

What Im saying is this, if you're not attempting to solve the issue then there's no point in ranting about it. If you can figure out whats wrong with it then you can post the solution or hey if you're looking for a solution how about attempting all the solutions first and providing some relevant data about your specific crash . A game isn't going to be patched if people don't give detailed information to the developers. Every system is different especially on Windows where so many libraries are externalized and non-standardized.

Also, a large problem with PoE is that it unfortunately inherits all the issues with Unity. Hence why so many of these crashes are caused by the same issue (.NET or Fonts).These problems are apparent and easy to fix for yourself if you actually attempt it instead of just crying over it.

I'm making legitimate complaints about various issues with the game. You're the one crying the issues I present. You would try to seem to be policing for the better but the reality you use terms like "crying about it" is just a subtle effort to troll. Much like your claims about people buying more ram etc. If devs could just say "buy a better machine" to offset issues we'd all need rooms full of machines parrelle computing to offset coding laziness. You contradict your own admission of what the right way to contribute to this thread is when you argue people should just go buy more RAM. That's not fixing the game, it's not even helping.

That said help is appreciate but the forums are a mix of help when it's found but other wise it's a place to voice concerns and report issues. Just because I state the game is a lumbering Gigantic Minuature Piglet and needs serious optimisation despite UNITY (other devs can do it so can Obsidian) doesn't mean you should get all cranky. You're not a mod and no one needs your policing. Now the thead has been skewed by pointlessness when the point is to get devs looking at the various reported issues and the various circumstances under which they happen so they can correct them next build.

===========================

@Meika,

I feel sad that I'll probably never get to play Pillars, because even when I do upgrade my OS, and add more ram, I wont be going to a 64bit system.

I probably wouldn't have funded it if I knew three years ago what I know today. Oh well. Life lessons learnt.

I'm experiencing crashes to desktop while trying to enter the main building in Caed Nua (the one of stone).

This seems to happen every single time.

None of the fixes either seemed relevant or worked.

I'm using the GOG version and I've tried re-installing twice now.
Couldn't find neither the setup for .NET or vcredist.
Can someone please take a look at my crashlog for me and tell me what the problem might be.
I'm sorry if I missed anything in the log that should have made it obvious.

Thanks in advance!

@Ekital

Hi
I followed the instructions in the link you gave me but I am having some difficulties.
Indeed, I have to replace the mono.dll file that is in the following path:
C: \ Users \ <yourusername> \ AppData \ LocalLow \ ObsidianEntertainment \ pillars of eternity \ WindowsPlayer \ WindowsPlayer_Data \ Mono.

But I do not have that. I have:
C: \ Users \ <yourusername> \ AppData \ LocalLow \ Obsidian Entertainment \ Pillars of Eternity \ CurrentGame.

And CurrentGame is empty.

Can you help me?

thank you very much.

Never mind, I seem to have solved my own issue. It was simply a matter of MSI Afterburner and RivaTunerStatisticsServer messing around. Had to exit each application in order to enter. Old graphic cards are iffy...

I'm crashing as soon as character creation is finished. The memory/available OS memory bothers me, could the problem be that my usaable memory is under 4 GB?
