obyknven
In second half of XIX century British Empire begin "Big Game" - fight for power in Central Asia and Middle East region. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Game For win in this Cold war of XIX century Brits decide reshape Muslim society and transform whole Islam into tool of colonial politics. They take control over Muslim religious school's and replace teachers who belongs by Traditional branches of Islam by members of marginal extremists sects. It's cause extreme changes in Religion, they just create Islamic version of Protestantism. Main difference of Protestantism from other religions must be explained. In ancient times pagan priest's often has been castrated, they must belongs for God,instead of world of humans, it''s some sort of fight against human nature, all these practices of an Asceticism is just attempt to stop being humans. In later times in Christianity castration of priests has been replaced by symbolic castration - Celibacy, but whole society stay oriented to human nature ( just google eroticism in Medieval times if you want known more ). But when Puritanism appeared all these non-natural limitations of ascetic priests life has been shared to whole society. Obviously this is cause non-stop wars, rebellions... and give to British Empire Hegemony in the World. In last half of XIX century in Central Asia similar things are begin with "help" of Europeans. Everyone begin wear Burqa's here, while in times before this only aristocrats wear this dress. Oppression, limitations to society from side Religion and religious hate extremely increased. But though Europeans make so significant efforts for this, they yet can't successfully ended this "project". Central Asia is only periphery of Islamic civilization, and center as Ottoman Empire is and other periphery - North Africa stay mostly untouched by such European influence. North Africa before WW1. \

obyknven
Obviously main hindrance to European colonialism in Middle East region is Ottoman Empire in this time. This is make this country a next victim of British Empire. Yet in first half of XIX century Ottoman empire has been heavily infested by British agents. In second half of century their actions become more violent and barefaced, in this time Ottomans begin understand of true nature of society changes in Middle East region. Continue here "Memoirs of Mr. Hempher, The British Spy to the Middle East" - text about ties between British intelligence services and violent movements of religious extremists - has been published in In 1868 year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memoirs_of_Mr._Hempher,_The_British_Spy_to_the_Middle_East http://www.sufi.it/islam/wahlast.htm Though this text considered as fake propaganda, time of his publication and content with accusations of British Empire in manipulation of Wahhabist puppets looks symptomatic. We has small amount of facts about this British activity only by one reason - British spy actions in this region in mid of XIX century... yet top secreted. This Project of militant "Islam" is not ended yet, it's easy to notice in history of second half of XX century and in last events. All well known facts about British role in rise of these extremists movements you can read here. http://www.social-sciences-and-humanities.com/PDF/house_of_saud.pdf just to say in first half of XX century Brits with help of extremists destroy Ottoman Empire and take control over center of Islam culture. After this changing of Muslim culture becomes explosive. During small period of direct European colonial control original Muslim cultures almost completely has been destroyed and has been replaced by extremist versions of "Islamic" puritanism. Yet in pre-WW1 times Islam is a peaceful meditative hippie-style religious practices. After European colonial "selection" middle Eastern societies has been transformed into this. ... obyknven
Such cultural change can be easily noticed in evolution of Muslim women swimsuits.Old-school Muslim women... erm... swimsuit. They swim naked. <(19th century Illustration) removed by Gorth - Naked indeed > Women swimsuits of Puritan Europe and America at same time Continue In begin of 20 century women take more freedom in dress because of liberal and leftist movements, but moral crusaders keep purity of society. all wrong dressed girls has been arrested Only after 50s women take freedom in beach fashion. Only after revolutionary Spring of 68 they take possibility be a naked as Muslim girls of previous century. But let's return to Muslim swimsuits. Present time. Yep, fashion of their colonial masters, fashion of puritan British Empire detected. This fashion stay unchanged because of help same colonial masters who prevent leftist revolutions in Middle Eastern region. It's how Europe can be looks like without all these left movements (but Leftist movements mostly defeated in First world now and it is how European fashion become looks like in future ). obyknven
Let's continue. For better understanding of pre-colonial culture of Muslim societies you can google "Erotic art of Ottoman Empire", "Erotic art of Islamic Persia", "Erotic art of Mughal Empire" and compare this with "Erotic art of Japan" . Difference between these countries is not too big in XVIII-XIX centuries, but example of Japan is very notable because of this country successfully defend yourself and save own culture, meanwhile cultures of Middle East and Hindustan regions has been totally destroyed by European colonization. Though Europeans occupy Japan after WW2 and cause some sort of Puritanisation Europeanisation here (just google how japanese pearl divers looks like after WW2 and now), but this influence is much much softer than events in Muslim world.Japanese culture well known, and this is excellent example how non-European cultures can looks like in case if Europeans don't destroy them. I just post some useful japanese books here. http://www.hlj.com/product/MDG22954 http://www.hlj.com/product/MDG22956http://www.amazon.co.jp/日本の軍装―幕末から日露戦争-中西-立太/dp/4499229197http://www.amazon.co.jp/日本の軍装-1930~1945-中西-立太/dp/4499205875 Edited November 20, 2014 by obyknven
