These discussions always leave me with conflicted emotions.

On the one hand, it illustrates a lot of the problems faced both as a matter of national policy and as a matter of empathy for others in tough situations.  Which is depressing.

On the other hand, I look at these numbers and am reminded that I'm pretty freaking rich.  Yay me!

I think that's part of it, also the fact that there is such an income disparity means that for the most part you won't see somebody finding something akin to McDonalds and making it worth a gajillion dollars. Because they don't have the inital money to even try to start up and then if they start to become big they get run over by their competitors corporations.

Although to be fair I'm considering starting a business in denver after school to fill a need between Boulder and the Denver international.

I always love reading stuff like this:

It never ceases to amaze me how enterprising some people can be.

Edit:  It also never ceases to amaze me how freaking difficult it can be as well.  Some of the financing requirements are a major hurdle.

And as soon as I find your address I'm putting an U somewhere on your name (just kidding...or am I? :fdevil: )

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

If you really want to cash in, become a petroleum geologist.   The average starting salary is  ~85,000$

Interesting. Petroleum Geologists in Australia can earn up to $240K - $300K. But they're senior positions.

There's some real wage disparities between the U.S. and other countries.

edit: found a starting position. Range between $90K - 160K

Yes Australia has the highest pay in the world for those positions.

Petrophysicists in the U.S. earn an average base pay of $137,548, as of September 2010, according to the Society of Petroleum Engineers.. Globally, petrophysicists earn an average of $134,774 per year. Those in Australia and New Zealand earn the highest wages in the world in this field, with an average salary of $210,501, followed by the Middle East at $166,797.  (Average base pay is different that average starting salary - base pay is before benefits, vacation, bonuses etc are factored in).

You wouldn't be the only one doing that. A lot of Swedes work in Norway as well... Which really is kind of bizarre. We get the Poles here to do our construction work, and then travel to Norway to do theirs. It's funny how the global economy works.
