The Russian government does care. They don't like negative publicity as they are trying to position Russia as a viable destination for many international events. They have also stated that there will be no discrimination against any gay athletes.

But until those countries try to host an international sports event this social  issue won't be discussed and highlighted. That's the main reason Russia is in the spotlight, they have only recently passed these new laws that discriminate against gay people and they are hosting the Winter Olympics next year

 

But trust me the 2022 FIFA world cup is in Qatar and there will be massive debates around certain laws they have implemented

Well, I'm usually above declaring an entire nation of millions to be a ****hole or the people being vile, human garbage or some other of litany of bad names, as it's boring and lazy to do. Not sure you know much of my temperament, much as Bruce above here, anyway.

I'm not sure why criticizing these policies is 'bashing' Russia.  We criticize US policies, politicians, and other things on a very regular basis here, and often times I even agree with the criticisms.  That doesn't mean I don't love my country and enjoy living in the US.  

 

I am sure there are many wonderful things about Russia and I hope to visit there someday.  But raising awareness about human rights violations is important, pressuring Russia to be more tolerant is admirable.

 

Also in regards to other countries where things are way worse, it's really a matter priorities.  African countries that end up with children getting abducted and forced into crazy military groups need to address more pressing concerns before they move on to other civil rights.

Yes, but you're ranking problems as they are in a society and I'd imagine a society with widespread corruption is a bigger issue (as it fosters abuses, etc) than a law nebulously banning gay propaganda.
