Ok, so I've been training for a while now, mostly martial arts and some pushups etc at home - but to be completly honest I have no idea what I'm doing half of the time. I don't know what works, although it does seem to have had an effect.

So, do you guys have any experience? A set you used to do that worked wonders for you - or maybe you joined crossfit/fitness/aerobics/etc and it was great.. Whatever it is, share you story and let's inspire each other to get into shape

honestly i could use a bit more exercise

i've become rather complacent and haven't gone on a night time adventure wandering through the hills for months now

the extent of my exertions is walking home from work. it's only 20mins or so away from home, but there's a pretty steep hill in the way

i get quite put off by the idea of lifting or push ups or anything because my right shoulder is royally ****ed

dislocated it about a dozen times over the past few years and every morning when i wake up i can barely lift my arm at all

I'm like 35 kilos overweight (but already lost 7 from the worst moment a couple of months ago), so I'm starting a lot further down the valley than you, so to speak. My cousin's husband, a former scholarship sprinter recently got himself back into super shape in his late 40s. He's gonna help me with my workouts after next week.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

In terms of weight training I like the high intensity, basic power exercises: Overhead press for shoulders, bent over rows for back, barbell curls for arms, deadlifts for the torso, squats for legs and that's about it. Low reps but high weights, one day on and one off.

For aerobic exercise I like to rep out on crunches of a morning, then walk/jog the dogs for 5-10 miles before breakfast and after supper. This is all mainly catered for the weekends rugger matches though, it can make you a bit too bulky, most people I know favour a more slender hollywood stature.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

I'm poor so I do poor people exercise. My weight for lifting is an old computer. My exercise bike is a terrifyingly noisy thing from the 1950s or 60s that I'm afraid will splinter into many shards of sharp, penetrating metal. Usually walk a few miles a day. Hopefully will upgrade to running and/or cycling. No experience with trainers or gyms because those

cost money.

Still, it's worked well enough, thus far. Lost 65 pounds (I think that's about 28kg for the more civilized peoples of the world,) since this time last year. Would like to gain muscle mass and end up strong rather than scrawny. Although I was scrawny as a child, so that's still better than being overweight.

Since I got back from Vegas I have been doing Cardio at gym. I do 50 minutes a night 3-5 times a week. I do 20 minute on the bike, 10 minutes rowing and 20 minutes on the treadmill. I am starting to feel much better as I get fitter and  I need less sleep. I want to sometimes ssubstitute road running for gym some nights. I'll go for a run on Sunday morning  :)

Interesting guys.

Cool, so you're gonna do running I suppose? You should keep us posted to motivate yourself - it would be pretty awesome if you lost those 35+ ;)

As a sidenote I'm 181cm and I weigh 76kg now.. Went down from 84 since start december - which is really starting to show. Diet (low carb) and exercise.

I'm poor so I do poor people exercise.

This might be useful then. I can't afford training equipment either so I'm using my own body as the weight or like you I improvise.

If you aren't going to a gym or have equipment at home, look up convict conditioning. Its a body weight program that get progressively more difficult. For example, you'll start out with basic body squats, then work up to one leg pistol squats, or starting from a basic chin-up you'll move on to one arm pull ups.

I remember seeing a basic program out there in the vastness of the internet.

I also prefer the basic compound barbell exercises like Nonek. Squat, deadlift, bench press and overhead press are all great exercises. If you can find an affordable gym I suggest you do them. It'll do wonders for your basic strength.

And of course always do some cardio.
