Hi all! :)

I opted making a poll on this, but the questions are obviously many more.

My thoughts:

- Healing potions should be rare

- Ability potions should be rare

- Scrolls should be very rare and be treated like pages out of rare grimoires

-Rogues should be able to use some of them, if some fitting skill is high enough

I'm just tired of all the potion gulping in CRPG, these things should be more impressive than a swig of some local ale.

My choices:

Potions and scrolls very rare. Of course "health" potions should be more available, but the other type of potions should be rare.

As for "rogues" being able to use scrolls (similar to in D&D 3E), I don't think we have to limit it to rogues, especially if it is a skills. If Wizards can wear armor, everybody with the right skills should have access to magic too.

No potions and no scrolls preferably.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

I want health potions to be rare enough to make you "feel" the pain when one of your characters get hit.

I want scrolls to be very rare which would allow for the few you do find to be very powerful.

I short, I don't want these items to be something that is so casual and ordinary that you'd use them in "common" fights.

I like potions and scrolls since they give a player more options than just resting to allow the party to keep going.

I interpret rare to mean once or twice per game, but perhaps you mean to balance that scarcity with variety? Healing balms and salves will likely need to be commonplace for balancing purposes.

I'd assume rare means that, if you're going through a level of a dungeon, you find maybe 1-5 healing potions of varying strengths at absolute most, and the off non-healing potion. Very rare like I want with scrolls would mean 1 to 2 per dungeon floor, and only because there's so many different spells that finding scrolls that are genuinely useful of those 1 or 2 is unlikely in itself.

The exception to this is what enemies carry - if you can kill them before they use all of them, you've earned them for yourself. (and that means I expect enemies to actually carry and use these items)

Potions - They should be commonplace. Not everyone has a priest around to heal everything that ails them, especially not on a battlefield. That's for the standard potions though, so if we're looking at something like Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, they should be much rarer.

Scrolls - They should be rare. Magic isn't for everyone, so it should stand to reason that there's a very limited market for them among merchants. And mages generally hold on to their scrolls, so you shouldn't just be able to fish one out of a random barrel in the backroom of a tavern.

Rogues & Magic - Rogues shouldn't be able to use mage-only items. They have their own strengths and weaknesses, so they shouldn't be able to do away with their weak points by using some of the most powerful items mages can find. That'd be reducing mages to a utility-level class. Instead, rogues should be able to work with a mages to gain benefits from their spells, and vice versa. This would go a long way towards having balanced classes.

I just don't want them to be endless. Or the resources to make them (herbs for brewing potions shouldn't respawn, for example).

I voted for very rare/rare.

I think ingredients should respawn in due time - if the game keeps track of how many days have passed, make it actually take a full year for the ingredients to respawn ya know ;D

Seasons would be cool as well.

I'd go with some simple weather conditions over seasons, as we'll probably see some places with and without snow as it is.
