Because it's apparently criminal to not go to New York if you can, I'll be going up for roughly 2 or 3 days next weekend. As a provincial I have literally zero clue as to what to see and where to go. I invite you all to exercise some cursory influence on my life through advice on this matter.

I generally enjoy museums, shops of oddities, live music, etc., and am not quite as fussed about photogenic tourist spots or big shopping malls. I'm fine with walking around but mobility to more 'remote' areas is probably not for the best. I also tend to get lost quite easily, but that's OK.

So far I have the blindingly obvious like Central Park and the Met. As you can see, that's not the best of lists.

DO IT! Best burgers I've ever had. Also you might want to hit up china town for the more odd shops and such.

ANd don't worry about transit... the subways go EVERYWHERE.

Connie Island, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Plaza and the Empire State. Now your list got a bit longer, also buy mace. Lot of crazy people in New York specially the subway.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

I haven't been in a long time, but of the typical corny-touristy things to do in NYC, the Circle Line cruise is worthwhile. You get a more historical appreciation of the city than you do with most of the main attractions. (Liberty and Ellis Islands less so, unless you have a family connection to Ellis. IMO, there's nothing all that special about the Statue of Liberty that you can't appreciate from afar.)

Times Square is great if you love billboards. Otherwise, it can be skipped.

I recommend picking a favorite movie or two that are set there and going to check out those locations. Otherwise, the Met, MoMA, Natural History, the Guggenheim, etc., can easily fill a couple days.

No, it just reminded me of my Aunt.

I agree you can miss Times Square. For me the parks were the coolest bits. And I don't so much mean central, but all the little ones.

But if you can afford it you definitively should catch a Broadway show.

Thanks all. I'm thinking ESB, Statue of Liberty and Times Square are not high priority - higher on my list is MOMA, Guggenheim, Central Park, etc. But I'm working out exactly how long I'll be there, so perhaps I'll have time for a more diverse diet.

I've revealed sufficient information about myself on these boards that it should be pretty easy to find out who I am through google. But yes, I'll definitely take some photos (despite being the most un-photogenic person in modern history).
