Tomorrow's (June 5) election day in Peru, so if you live in Peru, go out there and vote! It's your right and it's the future of your country at stake. The main candidates are Keiko Fujimori (Force 2011) and Ollanta Humala (Peruvian Nationalist Party). Here's some info on the candidates and what they support/oppose.

Keiko Fujimori

Fujimori supports making Peru a safer place to live and improving the quality of law enforcement within the country. She also supports boosting tourism, building roads, ports, and airports within the country. Additionally, she supports creating more jobs and increasing the quality of the education system.

Ollanta Humala

Humala supports starting over entirely and creating a new government, which he plans to call the "Second Republic of Peru". He seeks to end corruption and improving the level of education. He supports busting monopolies and the creation of a socialist health care system.

Without knowing anything about the country, parties, or political system, I would say that at this stage of the country's development I'd support the more capitalist party to promote basic economic growth (although at some stage universal health care needs to be set up like it has been in every developed country except America).

So probably Keiko.

You do realize that socialist health care is bad, don't you? I could sit here and prove you wrong all day, but it's midnight, I worked all day, and I don't want to derail this topic.

There are quite a few countries with socialist health care systems that do quite well, so maybe you could lay off the condescension a bit. Rather than just taking a broad brush and painting an entire idea bad, why don't you try and explain why a socialist health care system will not work in Peru? For example, I can explain why a socialist health care system would not do well in the US. As Krezack already mentioned, I doubt many of us know enough about Peru to make a very educated political decision.

I voted 'other', since the first two names sounded a bit foreign.

Also, lol'd at the socialist healthcare thing. Am expecting a tirade of ill-informed lunacy with eager eyes and restless fingers.

Force 2011 sounds like some DARPA project.

I think its funny that the only people who hate socialised health care are people in countries that don't have it. In my opinion health care should be provided by the people who want you to stay alive and pay more taxes rather than the people who want to have to pay out as little as possible so their profits are higher.

This whole thread seems odd given that the OP has a grand total of 0 non-WOT posts, and it has to do with a political system and situation so far removed from the consciousness of most on the boards that a couple of people (me included) probably thought "Wait, Peru is a democractic state?"

Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition!

Its moot. Humala won. Surprisingly it was like front page news on the Globe and Mail website.

Slow news day.

Also mostly concur with your comments re: socialised health care. Both systems have (big) problems, so in this case I'll err on the side that has better coverage.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

Yeah, I doubt it's a real persona. Seems more than likely an alt or troll account like LoF, obykven, Freedom Fighter.
