It's been getting several aftershocks ever since the earthquake that hit Christchurch last September, but they reckon this one feels like a whole new earthquake rather than just an aftershock.

I shrugged it off as just an aftershock (yeah, that's pretty bad in itself) but yes, there seem to be dozens dead.

65 dead last I heard. Yeah it was 6.3, but worse than the 7.1 one in September because it was closer to the city and more shallow.

I'm surprised how much damage it caused. Hopefully everyone on the forums is ok, we haven't heard from Shryke yet.

I imagine the effect of an earthquake on lingerie models is simply fascinating, rather than dangerous. So he should be in a safe environment.

Shryke's in Wellington, same as me, and there's another NZer here (who was it?) but also not in Christchurch. So all fine unless they went travelling.

I'm originally from Christchurch and lived there until I was twenty. I haven't heard of anyone I know who is missing, at least.

Looking at updates about Mrs Vos, it's funny the effect a name and a photo can have. Apparently they got her and others in her building out, so that's good.

yeah like Tigs said i'm in Wellington, so i'm fine - just haven't had the internet hooked up at my new flat until today

 

my flatmate's brother is down there at the army base where they've set up a temporary morgue

We've been shipping down food to a nearby marae housing ~30 people, it seems like they're taking a couple of weeks just to assess damage, get people/bodies out, etc.

been having a few quakes here in Wellington over the past week or so, but nothing to the extent of the Christchurch one

 

last i heard the death toll was up around 160 people, 7 of whom i knew

Tempted to make a joke about the underwear model community being apparently hit exceptionally hard, but won't in the name of good taste.

Sadly, I spoke too soon about not knowing anyone. One of the dead (well, technically missing still) was my best friend in primary/ intermediate school and one of my sister's school friends was killed on one of the buses that got hit. The place I used to live is also evacuated and apparently two people died on a walking track almost directly behind it.

I just realised we've gota business associate down in NZ who I've not spoken to in a while. I can't work out if it's a bit lame to email now and check he's OK.
