213374U Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 You seem to have missed where I wrote: [...]Is such life threatening? Nah. But it sure would be bloody annoying, eh? No, I read it just fine. I just see it as one of the obvious possible consequences of posting private information in a public forum. I'm surprised you don't. I repeat the question: how is this, again, a qualitative jump in risk from having your name and phone number appear in the directory? Or posting wedding announcements on the newspaper? I find that doing that sort of things and complaining about one's privacy being at risk are incompatible. But hey, I may just be paranoid, right? Because WoW boards users are like a Biblical scourge, or something. I already admitted where this could be a real risk, and it's with regards to data mining ops by HR depts. But as another poster said, if playing WoW is going to get you fired, maybe it's time to quit. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
Mamoulian War Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 (edited) Nope, but so far 2 people posted their real names on Blizz forums... so 2 out of 2 is 100% success of abusement Now do your math Wow, your logic is... wow. Are you just trolling me or...? Seriously, explain to me in great detail how 1, 2 or n where n ∈ N is equivalent to "any/all", because I can't seem to solve that one on my own. My logic is exactly the same as yours, just on opposite spectrum you are acting, like it is nothing when 2 people get harrased because they posted their real name on gaming forums, and i am doing the exact opposite, making it doom... your rhetoric is same as rhetoric of RIAA, my rhetoric is same as swedish pirate party.. just to make you sound ridiculous, like you realy are The truth is in middle as always... not all people who give up their name will be harrased by idiots and asshats, but the people who will be harrassed, might be suffering from it... from basic stuff like racist or homophobia emails in their account to stealing their identity and cleaning their bank account!!! and in this specific case n ∈ N is equivalent to "any/all", because 2 people revealed their identities, and two people got harrassed... and two people out of two people is in other words all people out of the presented statistical sample Edited July 8, 2010 by Mamoulian War Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. Wait, who was it that used asian elite hax0rs breaking into secure govt databases in minutes as a vehicle to support his arguments? You, sir, are a ****ing joke. The truth is in middle as always... not all people who give up their name will be harrased by idiots and asshats, but the people who will be harrassed, might be suffering from it... from basic stuff like racist or homophobia emails in their account to stealing their identity and cleaning their bank account!!!This is bull****. "The truth is in the middle" is a useless aphorism and trivially easy to disprove... as is the case with sweeping generalisations. If I said "blacks are inferior" and you denied it, does that mean that "some blacks are inferior", because "the truth is in the middle"? As for people being harassed... that will continue to happen (yes it is happening already *SHOCK!!!*), regardless of policies adopted by Blizz on their boards. Stalkers aren't anything new, in case you didn't know. and in this specific case n ∈ N is equivalent to "any/all", because 2 people revealed their identities, and two people got harrassed... and two people out of two people is in other words all people out of the presented statistical sample Sorry to break it to you, but that doesn't even make sense, mate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generalizatio..._the_particular And mr. too elite for us, here is the easiest way how to get most of your private information, without you ever writing anything about you on internet... Just from your real name and location (if it is also requirement to link with realID)... OmniThought wrote:Once I have your name and general location, if you own property, I can pay 5-15 dollars for a subscription to a public service record and find your address and telephone number. If you have family members in your FaceBook friends, I can scan that list for other possible household members to confirm where you live, and also find information about those other household members. I can use that information to scan through various sites through a more confined search engine to find any possible private information that you may have left on the internet, anywhere. If anyone felt like it, they could certainly find your address or phone number. Your SSN would be more difficult, of course, but if you ever made the slightest mistake in inputting it on a website that was not https, even years ago, it could possibly be found. The issue of time frame is an important one, because not everyone remembers everything they've ever typed on the internet. If anyone was really interested, and had connections, they could find even more private information. Note: There are also private record listings that people may have access to because of a job that they do. They could possibly use those records to find you, and if the person isn't an idiot, the chances of them getting caught would be considerably lessened. I've worked with such record listings in my occupations, and they are very, very detailed. Yes, yes. The world is a really dangerous place, and it's full of tech-savvy pro stalkers with "connections"... that rely nonetheless on you leaving your personal data in the open. Seriously, that guy could not find me unless he was an Interpol agent. But yeah, I guess Interpol agents have lots of friends with nothing better to do than prank calls on some nobody on the other side of the world... But I'm ridiculous. \o/ - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Heh, okay. It's interesting, because this links with what I've been saying all along: It's up to each person to protect their own privacy. Oh, but wait. You did claim that ANY real name is at risk of being abused. That includes my own. Here, in case you forgot: edit: and yes, i do think it is "good fight" because he just pointed out how any real name can be easily abused in a few minutes, thus showing the biggest flaw of this idea... Calax Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 If you are still playing WoW or have battle.net account, and you have serious issues about RealID, here is the way how to easily disable your RealID from appearing in any of the Activision - Blizzard games and networks available to other people... http://greedygoblin.blogspot.com/2010/07/w...out-realid.html Big thing about that is that it eliminates the Real-ID functionality within the game, but also denies posting on the new boards (blizzard has said as much). So basically it does nothing except force a choice on you via a different manner. According to a friend, the Starcraft 2 beta now has friend number strings rather than Real-ID so they may be backing off of this in general. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.

Thorton_AP Posted July 8, 2010 Author Posted July 8, 2010 He did not done anything illegal, he just searched through publicly available information, based on the Real Name posted on the gaming forums. Therefore as i said, i never use my real name on any gaming forums... You can wreak havoc without breaking any law, and no one will ever try or force you to stop, therefore i think the RealID requirement for gaming forum posting is one of the most retarded moves in gaming industry, which is even beating the Ubisoft newest DRM by big margin. edit: and yes, i do think it is "good fight" because he just pointed out how any real name can be easily abused in a few minutes, thus showing the biggest flaw of this idea... That his name is available in the gaming manual is irrelevant to this discussion. Awesome, you support people searching other people on the internet and posting it on their blog for their readers (who are upset at the company affiliated with this person) to harass. Speaks volumes about yourself.
Hurlshort Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 You know, out in the real world, I give out my name quite frequently. I don't walk around giving people a fake name, or showing a fake ID when I buy stuff. When people's names become widespread on the internet, I really just think it is going to become a non-issue. Sure, there will always be the chance for abuse, but those same chances exist outside the internet.
Thorton_AP Posted July 8, 2010 Author Posted July 8, 2010 You seem to have missed where I wrote: [...]Is such life threatening? My guess is simply due to the exposure. The number of people that actually take notice of a thread may (I don't know) be higher than the wedding posting or whatever. A popular post on the Blizz forums will probably be read by a lot of different people. Though to LadyCrimson, if people are phoning you to harass you, they've stripped away layers of their anonymity (unless they're long distance calling you from a pay phone or something, but then suddenly the effort required for this type of trolling starts to increase a lot) because they're leaving a more obvious trail to themselves.
