Spider Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Just thought I'd hsare this, Portal is currently available for free on Steam. http://store.steampowered.com/freeportal/ Since I've heard such good things about it, I figure it's about time to give it a try. Can't argue with the price.
WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 (edited) ... really? Holy crap, this is unexpected. I really shouldn't pass on this. EDIT: Oh, it's not permanent. Thought so. I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Humodour Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 It's permanent. If you buy the game now (i.e. add it to Steam) it will stay there for free permanently. GOG did a similar thing with some Tex Murphy games at one point. You just have to add it before the 24th.
WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Grabbing it right now then. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! That's the little bit of info I couldn't find on Steam. Spreading the word starting..... now. Seriously, nobody should lose this chance. Not at this price. Purkake Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Anyone who still hasn't played Portal should be ashamed(and play it ASAP).
HoonDing Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 I've been stuck in Room #457 for years. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.
WorstUsernameEver Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Anyone who still hasn't played Portal should be ashamed(and play it ASAP). Playing it right now. Don't feel particularly ashamed to be honest.
Malcador Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Never played it, can't say I'm that interested either, curious at all the love for it though. Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
HoonDing Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Only fun thing about Portal is putting two portals directly above each other and stepping through. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

I'm already fighting Glados Very fun though, I'll give you that, and the mechanics are original and clever. Edited May 13, 2010 by Gorth Spoiler tags added ;)
Thorton_AP Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 It is quite short. Honestly I don't think that that detracts from the game though. I think if it goes on much longer, it'd start to get old. I'd probably rather play Portal than most games which I would play for 10-20 hours.

I can see it growing stale if it was longer, considering they exhausted all the ideas for the mechanics they implemented.
Thorton_AP Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Portal was actually pretty influential on me rethinking length as a metric for determining value of a video game. Though it was part of Orange Box for me so the cost was pretty minimal.

Fact: My best friend had never played Portal until a couple of days ago, and didn't know what was so special about it. Then he watched the trailer. Then he got The Orange Box. Then he played Portal. The game was awesome. He was happy. - The End - Edit: Then Portal became free. Thankfully there are a lot of games in the Box and he bought it mostly for TF2.
