Hurlshort Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 Oh yeah, it was very steep. My knees will probably murder me tonight in my sleep.
Kor Qel Droma Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 The way back down was easier, although Skylar was wiped out at that point and did her best to sleep on my shoulders. Is your daughter partially or completely cutting off your air supply in that pic? Jaguars4ever is still alive. No word of a lie.
taks Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 i'm guessing on your day 6 i was less than 100 miles from you, but deep enough into the wilderness that there was not hope of hooking up for a beer. we started up squaw creek trail monday, july 6, and returned down weminuche creek trail thursday, july 9. cut it a day short because we determined (after the second day) the full trip would have taken more days than we had food or fuel. one of the guys on the trip was suffering altitude sickness, too (we topped out at 12,800 feet). sorry you couldn't find any of the beer. hope the ska stuff was good, however. taks comrade taks... just because.
Hurlshort Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 Thanks taks, I'm still really enjoying the Ska beer. I also went to Red Rock Brewery and had a sampler of the 7 beers they had on tap, it was a lot of fun and they were all very good. I guess it just isn't the season for Porters though. The next big trip I take, I plan on getting to Denver, because I really enjoyed Colorado and would like to see more of it.
Hurlshort Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 Day 13 - Today was our last day in Salt Lake City, and we decided to take a tour of a candy factory called Sweets. It was crazy, there were sugared up kids all over the place. The tour was fun though, and we got to try some jelly beans before the candy coating is added. There were a lot of samples, and we loaded up on an assortment of candy for the trip home. I've never seen Skylar so wired though, she was actually running circles. We grabbed lunch at Arby's and I saw a pretty large guy bring this soda in...100 ounces would take me a week to finish. So tomorrow we cross the desert to reach Virginia City, should be a long drive, but we are getting close to the end of the road.
Walsingham Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 OMG. 100 ounces? I thought those things were a myth. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
Hurlshort Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 Day 14 - We had a very long drive through Nevada, and google maps also sent me down a closed road at one point, but we arrived in Virginia City. It is a very interesting place, the whole town is a historic landmark. It's a pretty amazing Old West town, and tomorrow I'm excited to explore it all. Our RV park is interesting, there is an odd mix of permanent residents and vacationers. They put us right next to the historic cemetery, this is literally the view out my back window.
taks Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 The next big trip I take, I plan on getting to Denver, because I really enjoyed Colorado and would like to see more of it. colorado springs is nicer with more to do than denver and it's not very city-ish, either. rocky mountain national park, outside of boulder, is quite a sight to behold as well. taks comrade taks... just because.
Aristes Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Hey, bro, what are the chances? I'm driving through Nevada at the same time you are. I would seriously buy you a beer if we'd been close, but you were not even remotely close to me. Something else that sucks is that you were able to hit the Shakespeare festival in Cedar City. It's one of the best I've seen. The funny thing is, we're seeing two plays and neither are Shakespeare. We're watching The Secret Garden, mostly cause the wife want to go, and Private Lives by Noel Coward. We toyed with Henry V, but I own the movie and I've seen the stage production so we figured the Noel Coward play would have to do. We'll think of you guys while we're there tomorrow. I forgot the time change, so I had to switch the backstage tour til Friday. Anyhow, you've had some great pics. It looks like it was a blast. If only taks would have broken out a damned camera, we would have some pics of his excursion, but nooooooo. He's too good for us! If you ever get a chance to hit Virginia City or Carson, go for sure. I haven't been up to Northern Nevada for years now, which is truly sad. I envy your trip. Last time I was even close to halfway up the state was when I went to Rhyolite a few years ago, and that's not very far north of Las Vegas. If you get the chance, Death Valley in when the wildflowers bloom is awesome.
Hurlshort Posted July 17, 2009 Author Posted July 17, 2009 The Shakespeare stuff sounds good, maybe when Skylar is older. Day 15 - We started the day off with a train trip from Virginia City to Gold City (which is not a city by any means.) It was a short ride, but my daughter was extremely excited to ride on a choo choo train. Then we went to an old school house that was in remarkably good shape. It was built in 1876 and was designed for over 1,000 students. It graduated its last class in 1936, which is when all the mines in Virginia City had started drying up and the town started to become another Ghost town. It was saved in large part due to the show "Bonanza" which was based on Virginia City (although shot in LA) and it raised tourism enough to restore the city. It's a fantastic place, we got to tour an old mine that was actually at the back of a saloon and an Opera house that was very impressive. Tomorrow we were planning on heading home, but we decided to stop off at a relative near Reno for the night. So one more day.
Hurlshort Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 I'll wrap up the trip, but no more pictures. Day 16 - We drove through Reno to get to my uncle's house. Reno has really grown over the last 5 years or so, it's really a major city and has all the big chain stores. Reno 911 is going to have to find another town to lampoon if they keep growing like this. One thing that fascinated me when driving through Nevada is the brothels. I mean, I didn't stop in any obviously, but its the only state in the US that allows prostitution. I was surprised that there weren't more billboards though, I mean the casino signs are everywhere, but I imagine there are rules as to how blatant you can advertise for sex. Day 17 - We went out in the desert highlands in the morning, very beautiful. My Uncle's house is out pretty far in the desert, and I think next time we visit I'll try and learn to ride a dirt bike so I can explore the area more. We drove home from Reno and got there at about 8:30. The RV is a bit of a mess and we are out of clothes, so we are happy to be home. It was a great trip :D
