Morgoth Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 So, my understanding is that the 60GB model has 100% BC through hardware, is that right? Now I also learned that the 80GB model also has BC through software, and an actual BC list can be found here. Click It says for example that Final Fantasy 12 can be played on the 80GB model as well. What about the 40GB model? I currently have a 40GB model, but I wanna trade it in and buy a 60 or 80GB model instead in order to play a bunch of PS2 games. However, 60GB models are rare and pretty expensive. 80GB models it seems often have BC issues due to the fact that it only emulates through software. For those of you who have 60GB models: Any disadvantages compared to the 40/80 models? Any negative experiences? I know they suck more power, but that's about it I hope, because I'm seriously willing to fork out some extra money to finally get access to the vast PS2 games library. Rain makes everything better.
Meshugger Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 (edited) I only own (correction, it's the girlfriend's) the 60GB model, never tried any of the other models. It is quiet, has never frozen or crashed during gameplay and the backwards compability has a feature that the Xbox360 doesn't have: upscaling. Playing God of War on 1080p is a fine treat. I haven't tried Final Fantasy XII, but FFX looks a bit funny, since it doesn't natively support the widescreen format (it becomes letterboxed). Llyranor Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 There is only one 80gig model that has BC - the MGS4 bundle one. Since Sony doesn't manufacture 60gigs anymore, you're in a bit of a bind if it ever dies on you. If they can repair it, great. If they need to replace it, haha. PS2s are dirt cheap. (Approved by Fio, so feel free to use it)
Mamoulian War Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Sony never released 60GB BC compatible PS3 in europe, and some 80GB released in Europe are without BC aswell afaik... So watch out if you wanna trade in... The easiest way to play ps2 games is to buy PS2, even new are cheap as hell, but you dont get the upscaling Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. Morgoth Posted March 26, 2009 Author Posted March 26, 2009 I'm confused. Are you guys saying that the euro 60GB has no BC, and only a bunch of 80GB has BC? The Euro Version not included? And I don't have a TV otherwise I'd have bought a PS2 immediately. Rain makes everything better.
Mamoulian War Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 (edited) Only japanese and NA 20GB and 60GB models were hardware BC, the older EU 80GB versions are software BC but the newest 80GB EU models and all other aswell are not BC anymore iirc... worldwide 40GB were never BC compatible... EDIT: There are some converters with which u can connect Component cable to DVI in monitor. You will need few more cables to connect the Audio output to your stereo aswell There are some Component to HDMI reductions/converters aswell if your LCD does have HDMI in... You just have to make a little bit of research on it, because not all of them can convert analog to digital signal... EDIT2: Another option is to use the PS2 Scart cable, buy Scart Coupler and scart to vga reduction... that should work, but you'll get lower resolution and lower image quality... and some LCDs are unable to handle that low resolutions... I for example can't play PS1 games on my LCD through Component cable due to low resolution on them... Edited March 26, 2009 by Mamoulian War Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. Morgoth Posted March 26, 2009 Author Posted March 26, 2009 I can't see how that's supposed to work. You need to convert the signal somehow with an electronic device. Rain makes everything better.

Llyranor Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Well, I wouldn't mind PS2-BC on my PS3, but I don't really miss it either. (Approved by Fio, so feel free to use it)
Hurlshort Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 God of War is probably the only games I might be interested in, since I never played them. But I'm not dying for it, and then next one is on the PS3.
ramza Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I am really considering buying a ps2 as well. They are pretty cheap and there has been a newer model released in 2008 with some hardware improvements. I don't really know if I should buy it though. I don't have that much free time to play video games anymore and I wouldn't know where to begin with. There's so many games out there! The other thing that troubles me are the exclusives. I have been thinking about buying a gamecube instead of a ps2 because there are some cool games that are only available for the gamecube like the zelda games, resident evil zero and metal gear solid twin snakes, just to name a few... Meshugger Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Well, i am from Europe, have a 60GB PS3 (PAL), and it has BC. It must be magical or something. That 'something' is that the 60GB models in the PAL region were equipped with the graphics rasterizer of the PS2, but not the original PS2 CPU, which the Cell emulates instead. Every single PS2 game that i have works with the PS3, with excellent upscaling.
