Why not a good RTS ala Warhammer 40000 dawn of war?

Featured Replies

Hi there, I,ve just been thinking on that beacuse I still can,t imagine how an alien rpg game could be, and it looks like a very risky project; also, you all may have realized that after playing the only alien rts game which actually exits (avp extinction), then this came to my mind. We all know that avp extinction was not a very good game (the only good thing of the game was the "Beastiary" option and specially the praetorian part, where the developers probably invented its coolest description when defining him as the only "purebreed alien" and the rest of all were Hybrids.), so that an arcade rts game like dawn of war would be superb from my point of view at least.

What do you think people?, of course there would be 2 races only, marines and aliens, not predators of course.

Most Obsidian fans are looking for one thing only from Obsidian: RPGs. I'm even more narrow in the sense I'm most interested in games using the D&D rules or based on a franchise I really like, like Aliens.

Bioware lost me as a customer because of an extreme switch from their great D&D RPGs to 'action rpg' junk.

It's not a bad idea, but I think most console gamres don't do RTS. Am I right, fellahs?

Well, I used a console game as an example because it is the only alien based rts out there and it was released for consoles only..., you know that I,m refering to a potential pc game of course.

I don't see how one can think Alien RPG can't work but Alien RTS can

How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them.

I,m not prompting Obsidian to make a rts insteadof a rpg haha, I,m only suggesting about it.

umm, that was thinly veiled question why you think RTS would be more sensible/fitting than RPG to Aliens setting

Because when I play good rts games like dawn of war and think about how good would be an alien rts like it, with some sort of tech trees for marines and aliens alike an making the battlefield a savage encounter between them. It could be as in extinction, if you play as alien then you gotta contruct a hive and bla bla bla, if you play as marine then you gotta improve your weapons and so. All this better than in extinction of course, where there weren,t tech trees (or tiers) and the a.i. was lame.

This is easy dude, think on your favourite rts game and then translate it into marines and aliens.

I,m not implying that this is gonna be a bad game when I say "this is gona be a risky project"..., I just can,t figure it out only unless it,s based on the first film.

A DoW-like RTS wouldn't fit the setting much. Base-building, resource-gathering xenomorphs? No thanks.

No, I like the idea of an Aliens RPG much more than an Aliens RTS.

Is Obsidian well known for making great RTS's? Is there not a crapload of fantasy/sci fi RTS's already?

I wanted to remind you that both the "Zerg" and the "Tyranids" alike are some sort of copies of the alien, so claiming that aliens vs marines would be like terrans vs zergs... I,m just another one who got so dissapointed with avp extinction and wanted a new and properly done alien rts game, ok, if no ala warhammer, then ala starcraft if you prefer that then..., that was the reason for this post.

WH40K:DoW came at a very appropriate time. It was about 6 years since SC was out? There weren't any other big name Sci-Fi RTS games so it made a name for itself easily, what with being a VERY good game and all. The Tyranids may be a WH40K race, but they were not included in any of the DoW games. Probably because having Space Marines, Eldar and Tyranids would kinda make it look like SC, which Relic and THQ would have liked to distance themselves from.

DoWII is confirmed to have Space Marines, Orcs and Eldar. Some people speculate that it will also have Tyranids, but so far they have confirmed that the original game will have just 3 races, so forgetting the Tyranids is a safe bet for now, I think.

I didn't forget them, it's just that they weren't included in any of the DoW games and that's why I didn't refer to them.

I just think that the timing to make an Aliens RTS is off, not that it's a bad idea.

There aren,t three races, if you see that E3 teaser you realize that a fourth race is coming..., and this army is tyranids for sure (look at the spore clouds in the end of the teaser). Well, the time for an alien rts is not off, any other company could take care of it while obsidian makes his own rpg. What I wanted to say is that marines vs aliens (in a rts game) should never be considered as a copy of terrans vs zergs or space marines vs tyranids, because these two last ones are both inspired in the fight for survival of the marines against the aliens at hadley,s hope.

You and I probably won't, but the rest of the world will compare it, hence I laid it down, therefore it IS a bad idea, not by any means because you thought of it, heaven forbid should I ever make such a comment. Starcraft 2 coming out and Dawn of War 2 coming out, will a 3rd big franchise Sci-Fi RTS be a good idea?

Looked at the teaser again, I heard a lot of people saying the same thing, I see nothing. Maybe I'm just blind to it or I see what I want?

I still think the RPG will kick ass, the RTS can wait a few years :(

It's not that I think Obsidian couldn't do a cool RTS. In just the same way as I'm suer I could play bongos. But it would take time to shift.

If Aliens is going to ever enter the strategy category of games, I believe a turn based strategy would be more appropriate with the gameplay more akin along the lines of Jagged Alliance 2 than X-COM.

I believe a more humourous rebuttal

Well, this thread was done in order to see if I was the only dude in the world who played avp extinction, and just after the dissapointment thought..., "Damn them, this could,ve been a superb game if properly and deeply developed for the pc", and looking at all your answer people..., I think I,m just alone xD.

According to WH40K fluff, when a Tyranid Hive Fleet starts their invasion, they herald their coming with the release of biological spores into the planet atmosphere in order to hospitalize the environment for their forces. Unfortunately for everyone else, the clouds tend to veer on the "incredibly lethal" side of things. On the other hand, the mucus-looking thing spreading over the sky you see at the end of the trailer could also be a Warp Storm, which might "just" indicate a Chaos invasion or something similar. Then again, when was the last time a Black Crusade's sound cue was creepy strings? Strings which, at least in popular culture, tend to be used with creepy crawlies like spiders and such. And what else are Tyranids?

So, the spore clouds and the insect sound cue...what else is there? Well, it would be all kinds of odd for the devs to pass on the opportunity to add Tyranids when you've been saying for the last few years that the first DoW engine would not do them justice. Squad sizes, engine limitations and overall game balance, not to mention the base building and tech tree aspects of DoW 1 which would be pretty ridiculous to implement for a horde that basically arrives as a massive organ and eats it's way through a planet, all are reasons why Relic left them out of the previous game. Another good reason was the implementation of Necrons in Winter Assault and Dark Crusade, it would have been ridiculous to insert yet another "biggest evil yet" after the goddamn undead robots with both the agenda and the means to against freaking Chaos Gods.

Trust me on this, the 'Nids are here. They are incredibly popular, Relic wants them in and there's no reason they wouldn't be featured.
