I was just about to buy some new antivirus protection for my PC when I discovered that my bank (who I will not name because frankly they are wankers) are giving away free Kaspersky antivirus if you use online banking with them. I was wondering if any other companies are giving away free antivirus and what they get out of it.

You can run Kaspersky for free on-line, takes a while though.

You can scan yes, but it will not offer live-protection if you use the on-line version. :sorcerer:

How come this doesn't belong in Skeeter's?

Anyway a lot of companies give away anti virus for free. Mostly it's ISP:s, but I can see how others would do it as well. What they get out of it? It's a marketing tool. Simple as that.

If the OPs question is if there are free antivirus programs as a viable alternative to buying them, then yes, there are. AVG Free comes to mind for instance.

The cable company I use, Comcast, provides free lifetime McAfee's AV just for being a member. Its nice and you can install it on as many PC's as you like. Just log into the site from the PC you want it on and d/l away!

The University I work for gives away free symantec anti-virus to anyone who connects to their network (students, faculty, staff, alumni, etc.). I think they're just trying to keep infected computers off the network.

Anybody here catch that? All I understood was 'very'.
