Throwing bullets at people sound just silly.

On the contrary. You've not seen Hot Shots: Part Deux, have you?

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

oh, I have!

This is driving me nuts now. Can someone tell me what calibre those bullets are?

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO - KIMBERLY SHRUM grips a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver and aims at a target 25 yards away.

Bang.

A hot shell casing hits the floor, joining hundreds of others littering the concrete at Jackson Arms Indoor Shooting Range in South San Francisco.

...With that automatic extractor action revolvers are famous for. :)

And why would .223 rounds be bumping around Iraq?

US troops aren't the only ones who use the .223. It's probably not as common as Russian calibers there, but I bet it's not that rare. Certainly it'd be easy enough to acquire two factory loaded cartridges to pretend they were fired at your house.

I think that if you looked hard enough, you could find pretty much anything in Iraq. On a gun forum I frequent, an Army man posted some pictures of a WW2 era StG 44 he found in a stockpile, along with a couple of Thompsons and even wierder stuff. When he told us he later drove over it all with a tank, you could almost hear the heads pounding against our keyboards.

Not in Iraq, unfortunately.

!!!!!

The stg44 would certainly have been worth many thousands. Possibly more with the inevitable cachet attached to a weapon that had undoubtedly seen action.

I knew .223 was 5.56. I just thought that the use of shorthand .223 implied different characteristics to the military calibre.
