Hades was the life of the party. RIP You'll be missed.

I doubt there was anyone who wasn't unnerved at parts. The ambientwork and effects are at parts superb.

Alma on the other hand, wasn't scary to begin with.

It has made me the man I am today. A man who craves furry hentai.

So let us go and embrace the rustling smells of unseen worlds

Yo.

I got the Director's Edition. With it came a short commentary walkthrough of a portion of the game. The designers explained how they set up encounters so that you'd know about them in advance to plan how to tackle them. Armed with this knowledge, I played the game without getting even a little scared.

Until the very last part.

I got acrophobic jumping from girder to girder under the bridge in Half-Life 2.

My original point was that the perspective is not causative vis-a-vis horror; I made reference to books: have you never read a book that you were almost too scared to turn the page? :)

That bridge in Half-Life 2 scared the crap out of me, too. I get scared of heights in games.

Although not in real life, strangely.

i didn't find FEAR very scary, and I was trying. Although that could be based on my annoyance about not having shot that weird s.o.b. right at the start. I KNEW he was around that corner, and in fact got a shot off that would have caught him square in the eye - I have witnesses! *grumble grumble*

tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.

Ahh, Forbidden Forest by Paul Norman and its stentorian music. It was a creepy game, especially that invisible demogorgon. As for Aliens game, I'd personally like to see some more plot concerning the Giants (or Pilots as they are sometimes called.) My favorite fan theory was always that the Aliens were some sort of doomstay weapon created by them and they got wiped out by their creations.

Ooooh you really tickle my pickle!

I love a good ancient race plotline and ruins are always fun to explore.

I thought that was part of the AvP games though? Is it in the actual Aliens movies?

Well, the derelict and it's pilot was shown in the first movie and briefly revisited in the second. Sure the Giants have been explored a bit in some games and comic books (especially Aliens: Apocalypse - The Destroying Angels,) but still some space archeology would be better than just relying on the more usual "Aliens are on the loose because scientists tried to study them" plot. Not that I think it will be just that anyways.

I'm pretty sure I've gone over the lameness of FEAR. I was less afraid than frustrated by the lack of imagination (or imagineering, if you will)

I also suffered a sort of vertigo/acrophobia funk in the original Half-Life, climbing the cliff face, too.

Scared of heights? AirBuccaneers would have been the mod for curing that. Too bad the people don't play that any more. Too bad, UT usually gets some great mods, but people won't play them. I doubt it will be any different for UT3...

I suffer from neither vertigo nor acrophobia, except in sympathy for Gordon Freeman in those particular games. (I'm just soooo empathic, I should have my own lame character on the Enterprise.)

Also, Deus Ex was built using the UT game as a game design platform.

When was the last Unreal Tournament again?

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

Valid point. They did that very well. It didn't help you had to climb a ladder which dangled precariously close to the cliff edge.

I don't recall ever being afraid of heights in Deus Ex, though... but as I said, it scared me in other ways (bots and transgenics, mostly).

You know, thinking about it... having recently replayed Deus Ex and System Shock 2 as a melee character, and remembering HL with the crowbar, melee isn't as scary as ranged. With melee you face your enemy head-on... you kind of get to creep up on them instead the reverse.
