Tale Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Fable wasn't a tongue in cheek joke on RPGs, Fable was just a joke. God, how I hate that game. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
@\NightandtheShape/@ Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I just can't take the game seriously... Perhaps that helps my perception to be somewhat more forgiving, but if that's a serious RPG design then it's total insult, it doesn't feel serious, it plays like a parody. "I'm a programmer at a games company... REET GOOD!" - Me
Tale Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 (edited) When I think Parody, I think something funny in the way it makes fun of something else. When I think Fable, I think the only thing funny about it is just how bad the presentation, plot, and themes are. Hurlshort Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I enjoyed Fable, and I agree the parody of a Heroes quest was good. It was reminiscent of Quest for Glory in that aspect, although it definitely fell short in other areas. Still, it was a brief but fun adventure with some interesting attempts at a unique gameplay. I'll pick up the sequel. I'm not quite sure why people hated it so much. Was it because of too high expectations? Or was it because it was too easy and too short? Neither really kept me from enjoying the game.
Tale Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 (edited) I hated it because it was a blatantly annoying hack and slash. If it was a parody, it's one of those one joke comedians that will spin the same joke for hours. The joke may have been funny initially, but after one or two hours of nothing but that one joke, you want the guy to shut up. Edited May 23, 2007 by Tale "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Hurlshort Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 You really think it's a hack and slash? I think I only killed about 50 things in the entire game. I really thought it was combat light compared to most games.
Tale Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 It might not have had the hordes of enemies that Diablo did, but it's near exclusive mechanic was killing bad guys. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Jade Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I just finished Neverwinter Nights 2. My only regret is that I didn't find most of the dialogue to be very engaging. The NPCs liked to talk about themselves sometimes, but I didn't feel like they were 'bonding' with my character (save for Shandra). Also - I can't believe my potential romantic interests were Bishop (jerk) or Casavir (nice guys... finish last). I should've played a male. Anyway, I was happy enough with it to be sad that it ended. I have no clue what to play now. I'm all about story, interesting characters, and the ability to change the outcome through my actions. My friend keeps telling me to play Baldur's Gate. I wonder if I'll be able to get into such an old game, so pixelated and with little voice-acting. I have FFXII, I should get around to playing that, too. I did a bit though, and it seems fairly linear like all FF's. I get to follow along with the story, but I don't determine it. I guess that used to be okay, when I was younger, but not anymore. I know this surely gets uttered frequently, but I wish I had Kotor3 at my disposal now
Tale Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 (edited) Baldur's Gate has quite a bit of voice acting. If you can't get into, give up on any other games. It may not be up to date in graphics, but that doesn't mean it's not beautiful. If you want to just get to the good stuff, skip directly to Baldur's Gate II. Pidesco Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I have no clue what to play now. I'm all about story, interesting characters, and the ability to change the outcome through my actions. Get Planescape: Torment. Now! "My hovercraft is full of eels!" - Hungarian tourist I am Dan Quayle of the Romans. I want to tattoo a map of the Netherlands on my nether lands. Heja Sverige!! Everyone should cuffawkle more. The wrench is your friend.

Sand Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 The top RPGs to get are... Fallout 1 Planescape Torment Fallout 2 Ultima 4 Baldur's Gate 1 Baldur's Gate 2 Ultima 7 Neverwinter Nights 2 Jade Empire Arcanum Honorable mentions are KotOR 1, KotOR 2, Bloodlines, Morrowind (with expansions), Icewind Dale, and Icewind Dale 2. Pidesco Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I wouldn't put BG1 ahead of BG2. "My hovercraft is full of eels!" - Hungarian tourist I am Dan Quayle of the Romans. Sand Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I just like BG1 more than I did BG2. BG1 is the second most played game in my collection. Worn out three sets of discs. Jade Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Interesting list, Sand. I know, it's going to make me sound incredibly superficial, but I can't seem to get into old games after playing more recent ones. I can't seem to get immersed in the pixelated world. And I've really grown attached to hearing a voice rather than having to read, it makes all the difference in realism. So I'm having doubts about Planescape, despite the great things I've heard. But I will get myself a copy of BG2. I'll start there.
mkreku Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Get Deus Ex, Gothic 2 Gold and Oblivion while you're at it. Much less pixelated games. And they're all fully voice acted. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
Sand Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 (edited) I think you would be better off playing BG1 then BG2, since you can use the same character. Also there is this lovely mod called BG TuTu that allows you to play BG1 with the BG2 engine. If you can go through BG games successfully then you really should have any problems with Torment. Same basic engine, but a whole lot more text to read. The game plays more like an interactive novel than a traditional CRPG. If you are looking for games with a lot of voice work using up to date graphics then you really can't go wrong with NWN2 or Jade Empire. NWN2 is a long CRPG based on DnD 3.5e with a good mixture of cinematics and voice work with traditional role playing. Jade Empire is the best action CRPG I have played which is fully voiced and has great cinematics. If PS:T is an interactive novel then Jade Empire is an interactive movie. Deus Ex is a very well done FPS game and very much worth playing. Gothic 2, notso much. Oblivion is great when properly moded but has quite a number of shortcomings. I won't hold it against you that my first post in this thread was saying I just finished NWN 2 I've played about 30 minutes of JE when I was hanging out at a friend's. It looks decent enough, I just haven't been feeling oriental in the slightest lately. I want some pew pew lasers, or some elves and wizards! I know, picky picky. I'm as picky with my games as I am with my dates!
Sand Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 (edited) Well, if you can get past the dated graphics then Fallout is right up your ally. It has lasers and nasty and bloody criticals. If you get into the "oriental" mood then get JE for the PC. You don't need a monster rig to play it but the CG sequences are a little fuzzy. Didn't catch that about NWN2. Silly me. Too bad Grobnar wasn't a romance option. :D GROBNAR THE BARDINATOR! He was one of my favs. Edited May 23, 2007 by Sand Murphy's Law of Computer Gaming: The listed minimum specifications written on the box by the publisher are not the minimum specifications of the game set by the developer. @\NightandtheShape/@ - "Because you're a bizzare strange deranged human?" Jade Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Ha! I had 0 influence with Grobnar. Funniest part was the fight after the trial. He was saying something along the lines of, "If I were inspired, I'd sing a song right now.... Nope." I always took Kelghar (and Shandra) with me to tank, and a wizard for DPS. I've played too much WoW, it's really influenced my tactics. I even made the mistake of thinking making a rogue would give me more DPS than a warrior.
Sand Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I usually don't bother thinking in those terms when making a party. I go for the most interesting combinations. Such as when I went to the Ironfist halls the first time I had Neeshka, Grobnar, and Khelgar. Grobnar had some very interesting lines. Qara and Elanee always have some interesting quips in Logram's lair. If you have both Sand and Qara in your party... especially in the Duskwood, expect some tit for tat exchanges. I am going through the game again with a neutral evil wizardress with a sload of mods. So far it has been interesting with the new AI I put in the game. I didn't download any of the patches, bad me. I'd definitely be interested in new AI. Maybe I should replay - evil male side this time.

From what I read, Gothic 2 requires a monster machine? No, not really. It was made in 2002-2003 so if your rig can carry the load of Oblivion (don't tell me you're a nasty Xbot..?) you'll have no problem getting great performance out of Gothic 2 Gold. It's a very difficult game though so if you had trouble outrunning the werewolf in Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines, then this game is not for you. Actually.. If you have problems outrunning the werewolf in Bloodlines, gaming in general is probably not for you. Or walking. Or breathing. Get a respirator.
