What, no Jeremy Soule love?

Soule is awesome, but an Aliens wouldn't be his thing. He's better off with games like Icewind Dale and NWN.

Hades was the life of the party. RIP You'll be missed.

But, but his music has SOULE!

Actually, you should check out Soule's music for Natural Selection (a HL aliens vs marines mod). It really puts you in the feeling of being stranded in deep space and actually borrows quite a lot from James Horner's Aliens soundtrack, the only downside is there's not very much of it...I'm guessing he did the music as a favour or there was a very limited budget. Anyway, I feel he could pull off an Alien score very well.

I'm trying to find some sound samples but they aren't hosted on the website anymore.

Personally, I like Mark Morgan to do it. The Fallout games with the ambient music composed by him is simply perfect followed by the music from Planescape Torment.

Seems he made the OST for AVP2 expansion pack as well based from this list:

Actually, in all fairness there are only 2 or 3 songs that directly rip off Aphex Twin, but they happen to be the most memorable ones from the game, imho.

I'm less concerned about music than I am about the ambient sounds. The Alien DVD had an alternate audio track that isolated all the background noise from the movie, and it was really good. In particular, they had a lot of fluctuating "organic" drones that the ship's engine would make, and it set the ominous tone of the movie very well. But in comparison to most games, the Alien soundtrack was pretty sparse, and I wouldn't be surprised if Obs decided to rely on the orchestral score for setting the mood.

After reading all of this topic I have a few things to say in no order and I cant be arsed to quote everyone.

First of all, As for the Engine, Is it final that they will use Unreal3? I hope they use there own engine built from sctatch so it will have some originality. The hold idea of developers useing other peoples engines seems cheap to me.

2009 IS a long, long way off but at least you know that THIS time Obsidian arent being rushed to get the game out as quicky as possible just because its an established licence and Sega know it would make lots of $

Most games are made with engines that aren't made by developers

How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them.

I'd say thats mostly only the case for FPS games.

In some cases it's true (like FEAR for example. It's a good thing Monolith uses it's own tech), but for the most cases it's better to have the advantage of a powerful and versatile tech like Unreal in order to safe time and headaches.

The Alien FPS was given to GearBox instead of Monolith because alot of Alien fans felt that Monoliths version of AvP was dumbed down compared to Rabellions others thought Monoliths was better So I think Sega desided to give it to GearBox so it would be a clean slate. I admit I did think they would give it to Monolith since Sega and Monolith are on good terms.

That's hardly a reason for SEGA to choose Gearbox because the fans think this or that... AvP2 was a throughly better designed game, but lacked the adrenaline pumping pace of AvP1, that's probably why so many (inluding myself) think AvP1 was closer to the Alien feel.... Still, I guess Monolith's currently so busy with their own projects that Sega had to choose Gearbox.

Using an established engine frees up development for other aspects of the game and makes the game closer to release. Still, I like to know why do a Alien game, CRPG or otherwise, in the first place. Isn't the franchise dead? If it wasn't before that lame AvP movie it should be deep sixed afterwards.

Murphy's Law of Computer Gaming: The listed minimum specifications written on the box by the publisher are not the minimum specifications of the game set by the developer.

Spending resources on something non-essential to the creative process (like building a game engine from scratch) is not necessarily the best plan. Why reinvent the wheel? One reason that Half-Life 2 took so long to be released was that Valve were creating Source. And you've heard of Duke Nukem Forever, right?

Ehm, DNF uses licensed engine. Sure; it uses like 3 or so (Quake, Source and Unreal now?) if not more, but still...

As for using existing game engines to use for games; it is very well possible. Ofcourse a new engine allows complete control of everything, whereas the license does block some options... but are these things really worth the additional time and costs?

It all depends on the dev wheter they alter the engine to the good (like Deus Ex) or the bad (say; Invisible War), not the engine itself...

Since when has DNF been a Source game?

And what options are blocked when licensing an engine?

IWD2 is a perfect example of blocked options.

What engine options are blocked?

And furthermore, does such restrictions on the engine code apply to licensing the Unreal 3 Engine?

Doubtful(but I suppose it depends upon the deal made with epic) & unrealscript is really powerful...

Hmmm... could also have been the Doom one... that thing uses so many different ones I lost track atleast...

As for engine-limitations there are several things apparently Aurora/Oddyssus cannot handle, hence they miss in Kotor2; that kind of stuff. Every engine has it's weaknessses (but ofcourse that also applies to new ones)

As for UE3; I think alot is possible with that one. Otherwise there never would be so many licenses on it; even from non-FPS developers...

DNF is based on the Unreal Engine, heavily modified of course. And to back up my statement with hard facts, here's the first ingame screenshot!

I mean, everyone can see that's totally Unreal, right?

Well Rumour control gentlemen

Ok...ok...Why people are talking about Unreal Engine 3 so much? Obsidian dont have the license...im wrong?

Gearbox will work whit UE3 coz they have an agreedment whit Epic...but Obsidian?

Whats the reason for thouse rumours?

PD: sorry for my poor english.

Godness! How can i miss that! O_O

Thx!

EDIT: mmmm can someone show me a link to it? I mean, they talk in the "Senior Character Modeler / Texture Artist" apply, about the Unreal Engine and Unreal Technology...as a plus. But could be and older version... :teehee:

Altough not explicitely stated (anymore)

-Knowledge of next generation art implementation and theories (high resolution modeling, normal maps, shaders, etc).

-Strong working knowledge of the Unreal Engine and Unreal Technology a definite plus.

should tell enough.

OFCOURSE this *can* be for other games (New Jersey?); so it cannot be said with certainty yet...
