Im more interested in this project than I was. Playing STALKER (though not a crpg itself) has made me remember how fun firearm based crpgs can be. Not that there's anything wrong with whacking someone with flaming claymore, but diversity is good for the soul!

also I want a smartgun.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Hades was the life of the party. RIP You'll be missed.

I'm hoping for a less combat focused RPG. I'd rather feel like a regular 'joe' trying to escape xeno horrors than a space marine fragging aliens.

Why not give the player the choice of both?

Because chances are the game is going to demand one of two options, either A. You run from the xenos or B. You destroy the xenos. It'll most likely lean towards B, and the game will force you to go down this road. Your continued existence will depend upon the xenos being destroyed. It could be as simple as Frank Horrigan camping out in the escape pod chamber, or some other such contrivance. There might be many novel ways to get this done, but inevitably the PC is going to have to become a badass combatant.

I could be wrong, there could be alternate modes of play. I'm trying to imagine some way to integrate a "thief" or other non-combat-oriented PC into a game whose primary villains are super-stealthy, hive-minded animals, and make the game just as involving as it would be for a combat-oriented PC.

I'm not really interested in a non-combat based crpg. I wouldn't mind a crpg that tends toward a survival horror feel, where the combat is more focused on trying to escape and survive, vs a lot of big combat scenarios onvolving rocket launchers and tanks.

However, if you were to remove the combat completely or minimize it to the point where it's just an add-on (hello, PS:T!), then I would be looking elsewhere.

also:

a) no scaling, plz. Or at least make it work.

b) skillz that actually are meaningful

c) a leveling system that actually works without being modded.

(yes, I am looking at you Oblivion! %$#$% )

I hope the devs are taking a look at how STALKER has implemented some of its world and systems. I hope the devs are NOT looking how Oblivion has done it.

Did I mention atmosphere? No? Probably the single most important thing to the alien experience! Alone, hunted, darkness, water, slime, acid residue, rain, drips, uneaten food on plates, SCAWY! <3

Also, did I mention smartguns and body armor?

Sounds, don't forget that audio plays an important role. I know System Shock 2 does.

Hear yourself breathing in a suffocating breathe, your heart racing when the motion scanner accelerates its beeping noise. When you fire your weapons continuously, you begin to make some random shoutings or strings of curses at the alien you're blasting and ones filled with fear when you keep missing your shots or when its too close to you.

Good ambient sound is really really REALLY important. I totally agree. You can't have really effective atmosphere without ambient sound.

Obviously, the more of the five senses that can be utilized the stronger the atmosphere, but at the moment with computer games we really only have 2, sight and sound, which makes them each a huge part of the equation.

I'm hoping for a survival horror RPG myself. No party, certainly.

I'm ambivalent about combat. I understand it's necessary to maintain a certain amount of tension, but I want to feel as though any encounter with an alien might be my last. It's hard to see the aliens as nightmarish biomechanical killers when you kill thirty of them on the first level.

meh. I'm not interested in running, skulking, hiding, and solving puzzles for the whole game, some of the game, sure, absolutely. But I want to blow the crap out of some aliens and bounty hunters and whatever else is lurking about me. Its a consturctive release of tension, you see. :)

Non-combat games have a place (Thief, for example), but its a small place that doesn't have a lot of room for too many titles.

It's a much more believable narrative device (i.e. assists in the suspension of disbelief) to have the weaker/outnumbered protagonist sneak around and enact punitive damage on the enemies via carefully planned ambushes. Hence Tom Clancy is more "realistic" than Doom.

"realistic", as a concept, when applied to computer games, always makes my tum-tum hurt.

I understand your tummy's reluctance, but if the game is too far from normalcy our puny brains will not be able to leap into the virtual world ...

I somewhat disagree. the more alien or "unreal" an experience is, the harder the game will have to work to make us believe and understand it. So, yes, that part I agree with: unreality can be alienating. But, given an internally consistent world that follows a set of rules that gamers can eventually understand, even the most outlandish premise and outrageous departures from reality can be made believable enough to be enjoyed.

Hollywood lives off of that one concept!

I was wondering if this is the Obsidian project that is further along in its development cycle.

No. Project Jersey should be futher along.

No. Project Jersey should be futher along.

And I though that one was officially unofficially canceled.

MYSTARY.

Unless of course one of the devs would finally clear that up, once and for all!

Why do you keep on bringing up non-combat games?

But, no, I'm not interested in another Mass Effect or STALKER or DOOM or Neverwinter Nights 2. I don't approach a horror game hoping to release tension. I want to feel tension, dread, and the shivers.

Music plays a big part of the gaming experience. The ambient music in Bloodlines was creepy at times, building up tension as you played.

The Ocean House without the music and sound effects would have been corny. When you're playing an undead monster, and creaking noises and whispers cause a chill to travel up your spine, you know the developers have done something right.

Shame that Bloodlines had such a low sell through. It was the best of Trokia's games by far.

That was one of the best parts of the game. The background sounds were scary and made you edgy as you explored the burned out hotel.
