Guard Dog Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 I can't believe no one has mentioned Space Empires V. It is not MOO2 but it is a heck of a lot closer than anything else. Unlike GalCiv2 is has tactical combat in both space and planet surface. The AI is weak and unagressive but there are mods that spice it up considerably. It is by far the most customizable 4X space game by far (more than MOO2). You guys should give it a look. Walsingham Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 I'm wondering how hard it will be to play x2 BTF as a space combat game once I get my armada built up. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
Calax Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 think I should add that Relic doesn't have the rights to make another HW game. Those are owned by Vivendi at this time. Relic might try to re take them from Vivendi but I doubt thats on their mind And Company of Heroes and Dawn of War are two very differeng games. Company of heroes is about very small unit tactics while DOW is about armies saying SMASH to each other. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
Rosbjerg Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I need a new Space Strat game. Someone sell me on Galactic Civ 2 that was mentioned earlier. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've been playing GC2 for quite a while now.. and I fully recommend it, especially since they are releasing the new expansion soon (Dark Avatar) .. which will fix alot of the complaints the fans of GC2 had.. But one of the best parts of the game is designing your own ships - I spend hours making my frigates look just how I want them! ^_^ (the graphics are better than in this shot - don't know why it's so blurry! - taken from their website www.galciv2.com) Fortune favors the bald.
Walsingham Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Designing your own stuff rules. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
Jorian Drake Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Designing your own stuff rules. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> this option could be imbued with all genres (like strategy, rpg, adventure, sports, ect.) I would like for example a castle building medieval game, where you can costumize the ruler family membery, the troops (armor, coat of arms, weapons, ect.) and the castle itself. Most costumizable games are now old, they seem to leave this out from newer games, what a pity.
Walsingham Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Apart from anything else I always think it saves time for the designers. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
astr0creep Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Has Imperium Galactica 2 been mentioned yet? It's a lot like MOO2 and GalCiv except it's real time. I had an urge to play it this weekend but for some reason I had a lot of lagging going on with cutscenes(one of the best intros evar!) skipping and unresponsive cursor and controls. Perhaps that was my failing Hard Drive though( I need a new one). Among other great features you can hire spies and train them to be better at certain types of missions based on their skills. I recommend it. http://entertainmentandbeyond.blogspot.com/

I still haven't managed to get past 15 planets on hard, but medium is becoming a piece of cake. I've never had a problem with cursor controls, but I have had the cutscene skipping problem on my computer as well. From what I recall it had something to do with the game not liking windows XP. There was a work around to fix it I believe, but I don't recall what it was now. Such a shame because I really like the cutscene in the game. The Solarian intro with the space fight and the one where you send the fighters in to locate the crystal in the asteroid field were amazing scenes! Unfortunately the game becomes way too easy once you discover the ultimate ship configuration. Edited January 3, 2007 by Deraldin
Walsingham Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Yeah, I can't get Imperium Galactica 2 to work in XP. A good game, but sadly superceded. "It wasn't lies. Rosbjerg Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I played that alot back when I had Windows 98 installed.. but wasn't it turnbased like GalCiv? I remember it like that.. great game though, really ahead of it's time. Fortune favors the bald.

I remember it like that.. great game though, really ahead of it's time. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You had a "time speed control thingy" that you could pause, speed up or set in-between to input commands and do things but it was all Real-time, as in not turn-based. The biggest gripe I have with the game is that there was 4 discs. 1 for installation and one for each playable race. But when you double clicked the icon on your desktop you needed the install disk in the CD drive and then you had to swap to the race disk when loading a save. http://entertainmentandbeyond.blogspot.com/
Rosbjerg Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I know.. I still have them.. ^_^ which is why I always installed a patch - the constant switching was getting annoying.. (also does anyone else thinks there's an awful big resemblance between the Kra'hen and Drengin? ) Fortune favors the bald.

(also does anyone else thinks there's an awful big resemblance between the Kra'hen and Drengin? ) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They are fairly similar in terns of looks, but at least the Drengin are willing to use diplomacy. If you got the Kra'hen mad at you before you were ready for them, there was no way to stop them. Had that happen to me a few times. I think I may have to start up another game of IG2. Go Shinari!
Jorian Drake Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Has Imperium Galactica 2 been mentioned yet? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Another great hungarian Digital Reality masterpiece! ( i think i mentioned it already somewhere )

astr0creep Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Ok after a bit of searching I found all the patches needed to play Imperium Galactica 2 on Windows Xp... Oh yeah I nearly forgot. Here are the links: :D The 1.14 patch is the unofficial one that solves the lagging problem in XP and other glitches. Here are the two latest official patches and they are needed for the 1.14 to work properly. I believe you should first install 1.06 then 1.08(it's smaller than 1.06) and finally 1.14. I haven't tried these yet as I will reinstall IG2 right after this post is completed. You're welcome. http://entertainmentandbeyond.blogspot.com/

Rosbjerg Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 So Imperium Galactica 2 is a good game, worth playing for a n00b? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's aging a bit .. but it was very ahead of it's time when it came out.. I don't know how much you'll enjoy it if you haven't played it before.. but give it a try! (if you can borrow it or something) Fortune favors the bald.

metadigital Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I can only find it for US$20 on Amazon (so far). OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
Deraldin Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I can only find it for US$20 on Amazon (so far). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I know I had more than $20 worth of fun from the game. I paid full price for the game when it was brand new and I think it was worth every penny. It's not exactly all the challenging in the tactics department. The only challenge I ever really found was getting a large enough income base set up during the initial stages so that I was never running out of money. You'd be surprised how fast your treasury can go down when you are pumping out 5-10 $6 million battleships every month.
