There is a fine line though. You can even think of a plausible explanation for "The Force" in Star Wars and the rationale of using lightsabers in favour of more advanced weaponry if you think hard enough.

That's why I feel System Shock2 or Deus Ex are true Science Fiction games. Star Wars otoh is just a casper-theatre.

Star Wars was cool when I was 12.

I always thought starwars was science-fantasy.

Star Wars is space opera and/or fantasy

Simple as that :)

Alien for example is scifi, not fantasy.

How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them.

In that case the "power" divulges from the realm of fantasy as it ceases to be magic.  The nature of that power is mutually exclusive:  If it's magic, then it cannot be scientifically explained; similarly the converse is also true - if it can be scientifically explained, then it's not magic.

Therefore, if the force which propagates the effect can be scientifically explained, it's Sci-Fi.  If it's a result of magic, then it's fantasy.

Simple issue explained simply.

I never saw much science in star wars, but I did see the fantasy I always see it as being more akin to LOTR's than say Star Trek... Space Fantasy...

Science fiction is the plausible if unlikely application of science, Science fantasy is a complete departure of the principles of physics.

There really isen't more to be said on the subject.

Actually, I think the best way to envision the definition is as a spectrum; I'd place fantasy at one end and science at the other, and that would allow for Star Trek to be on that line more towards to fantasy than say an Arthur C Clarke plot, like 2001: A Space Odyssey, but further from that fantasy pole than, say, Lord of the Rings.

Or, in the words of Arthur C. Clarke, "Science Fiction is a representation of what could happen .. Fantasy is what we wish could happen."

The intersection of the two is a borderless land best explored in another thread.

Why are you all assuming that this Aliens RPG will be a horror game?

I really hope it's not. I just want them to make a great expansive RPG in the Aliens universe. The further away from Survival horror, the better.

Can you actually name a Sci-Fi movie or TV series that fits this definition?

Alien.

Murphy's Law of Computer Gaming: The listed minimum specifications written on the box by the publisher are not the minimum specifications of the game set by the developer.

Ouch, Doomy lays the smack down.

if you think Gromnir is talking 'bout the color of patches on uniforms, you musta' mind-melded with somebody 1 door down.

Where are you going with this? What is your goal? I have already given examples of what I think are fine details to observe and I've already stated that I think any details that are burdensome to the casual fan are questionable at best. I even said that I wouldn't use the "formal" terms for those creatures in a movie or game because they are understood by such a marginal portion of potential players that they are alienating.

What is left to debate? If you don't disagree with the examples I've given, why do you insist that I'm not listening to you?

the fact that josh seems to thinks that his badge example and name of the rose examples is same is concern enough.

*shrug*

am thinking that it should be obvious that in a movie like name o' the rose the writers/directors coulda' spent far too much effort making sure that the various religious factions were authentic... but maybe josh don't see how that could be a problem.

regardless, rare is the individual who concerns self with badge color but is willing to sacrifice faithfulness to licensce for sake o' story or gameplay. again, preoccupation with such stuff is symtomatic... is why we used symptom language in first place.

josh has shown his history major roots in past when talk o' minutae o' fallout and fr settings or rl crap comes up in board debates. am hopeful that he is the rare guy that can worries over patch color, but ignore larger stuff that is often deemed essential by the true believers.

HA! Good Fun!

That would suck and is why you review games and don't design them.

Actually it's basic economics.  If you spend resources (time) on one thing, then you don't have as many resources to spend on everything else.
Don't know if you're defending Grommy's pov or just explaining it, but I don't agree.

Maps are going to have some degree of detail to them. Model skins will have to be textured. Dialogues will have to be written all the same. Now, if that work is done (or supervised) by someone that is familiar enough with the setting, I don't think the kind of easter eggs Josh mentioned (derived from his examples from the Name of the Rose) would mean a timesink important enough to make the project suffer as a whole.

- When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
