PhysX Performance Update

Short article, and somewhat limited in scope (only one benchmark), but a good read nonetheless. At this point in time, this is probably the only benchmark that allows a fair apples-to-apples comparison of system performance with or without a PhysX. I'm starting to believe even more that in a lot of games, the additional polygons generated by the PhysX screws up the graphics system.

Yeah I saw this article too. I personally feel that what the PhysX anomaly will do will either push mobo/cpu designers to integrate or video cards to add on. The PC is moving, imo, toward tighter integration, not more add-ons. so, my prediction, the PhysX longevity lies in exhibiting enough performance increase that: a) someone buys them out to integrate (a la Voodoo), or; b) one of the big corps takes the ideas an creates their own integrated model. the fact is that, imo, bang for the buck comes with either a better GPU or CPU. The good thing is that this a tech that will push innovation, just not ultimately as a stand alone item ... or so I think

Yeah, I think both those scenarios are equally likely at this point: Intel or AMD-ATi licencing their own "DX" PhysX integration chip, to contrast with their vanilla "SX" CPUs (

DX was the integration of the Math coprocessor wasn't it?

I remember the good old days when FPUs didn't just come on processors

But a math coprocessor would be different than a PPU - or is the reference to parallel that something similar has been done previously?

Well, IIRC Math Co-Processors used to be available via add on cards. Now they're just right on the chip.

 

It's possible that something physics related could make its way on, especially if stuff like video technology is making its way on.

I remember getting a math processor for my 386 33 mHz SX. It was just a chip you put in a socket that was already there on the motherboard
