Bokishi Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 (edited) People can play in 9 more hours *waits* Ok here's what I know so far, It is supposed to have enhanced graphics, such as full HDR, Alyx acts a lot smarter, Barney looks a little different; sort of stressed out, I think they improved the character expression system. Breen is dead so the main enemy is Advisor himself, he might even speak to you. Edited June 1, 2006 by Bokishi Current 3DMark
metadigital Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 My "preload" is stuck at 83.8% (probably the new finalized assets), even though I have preloaded and pre-paid a month ago ... OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
metadigital Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 (edited) Hmmm. I only just checked it about half-an-hour ago, as I didn't want anything to interrupt my Episode One experience ... perhaps I shall need to pause and restart it. Edit: just tried to cancel and restart and was warned that the server was too busy and to "try again in a few hours". Fortunately the whole process seems to have been invalidated and continues (albeit at the snail's pace) ... Daaave Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Review Just because you're a bit thinner than your even fatter mum it doesn't mean you're in excellent physical shape, if you could fit through the door and view the normal people you'd notice that cheeseburger boy. Squid suck.
angshuman Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Decrypting... Won't get around to really playing it before the weekend though. >.<
aerowars617 Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 I'll wait for a boxed version. Im not ready to purchase on Steam, plus since my native currency isnt US$, the exchange rates I imagine would be horrendous . Hard copies rule!
Musopticon? Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 I'll get a second hand hard copy, or something. I just hope it's not 44 euros like Winter Assault. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. angshuman Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 OK, so I couldn't resist and started it up. I only had a chance to play about 5-10 minutes, so the only thing I can comment on is the Graphics: Alyx looks more life-like than ever (w00t) ... they're suppoed to be using this so-called "Hero Lighting" on her. In-game, it looks real nice - very, very subtle, but it adds this little bit of... "life"... to her face. You don't always notice it, but when she's standing close to light sources, its effect can be seen. The quality of facial animation also seems to have been bumped up a notch. From what I've seen, the environmental HDR effects also seem subtle and well-done, unlike the slightly over-the-top treatment given to Lost Coast. I love my 7800GTX.
Bokishi Posted June 1, 2006 Author Posted June 1, 2006 Yeah it looks like HL2 updated for 2006 (w00t) Current 3DMark
LostStraw Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 (edited) At a price of around 4$ per hour, I'll be passing this one up. Amazon is selling the boxed copy for only $16.99 Amazon. Although with shipping costs, it'll come out to be around the same (but you get a pretty box.. and the ability to resell it -- once you've played all 5 hours). Edited June 1, 2006 by LostStraw
Kaftan Barlast Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Hl2 was an average FPS, nothing more. Why would I pay to experience more of it? You can't transfer it out of your Steam account, regardless, so anyone would still have to buy the game from Valve in order to have a validated copy.

I didn't think it would be tied to a steam acount like that <_<.
alanschu Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 On the plus side, you don't need to worry about your CD-Key ever again. I didn't really notice it at the time, but I didn't need to reinput my CD-Key when I reinstalled Half-Life 2. For better or worse, it's all part of their copy protection scheme. I haven't tested it, but I actually think that, in the event you lose your Half-Life 2 CD, you can just download the game off of Steam again. Hl2 was an average FPS, nothing more. Why would I pay to experience more of it? If you don't like it...you shouldn't. The real question is why would you bother coming into a thread with people that are interested in the game just to comment how you felt it was a mediocre game.

Some character classes have the "break into the thread to complain about a game you neither hated nor adored" trait. Haitoku Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Hl2 was an average FPS, nothing more. Why would I pay to experience more of it? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Because it wasn't average, that's why. It's one of the best single player FPS ever. I'm trying to get it off steam, but I when I click on "Buy Now" nothing happens.

I found my old Counter-Strike CD from a platinum collection that I won several years ago. When I input the CD key, it recognized that I had the entire platinum collection, and downloaded all of the original Half-Life games onto my PC (even some that weren't at the time included in my platinum pack, like Blue Shift, because it wasn't out yet). And now it's all linked to my Steam account so I can play them all without CDs and as far as I know I can play them on different computers if I want to use my steam account on my wife's laptop.
