Well, if you try to make something which isn't clean look clean, it's basically the same as lying, isn't it? It's like showing only the good and hiding the bad. No honesty there. And it's integrity that makes a person who he is. No bs and the like.

Title got cut off. Should be integrity.

According to NLP (and a lot of salesmen's literature) if one acts in a certain way they are programming themselves to behave more like that: role models are a good way to facilitate the younger (and more impressionable) to conform to higher standards of conduct.

In the case of personal hygiene, maintaining a clean image IS being clean so I'd prefer it if people did that.  Especially the damn pinko commie hippies.  Get a bath.  Frequently.

Hey, dingo you man. I take an hour long shower almost every day and I still proudly sport my CCCP T-shirt.

Yeah, those can be.....hell, they piss me off too.

I mean, I don't get to walk around with a cucumber in my pocket and have it be fine with everybody. So why the hell is this OK?

But do the young who conform to the these standards are doing so because they see the merits in them or because they are being manipulated to follow the whims of a handful of mouthpieces of some self-aggrandizing circle jerk society?

I think he might mean the situation where schools, workplaces etc. make you remove piercings, cover tattoos, cut your hair, shave etc.

And that is in way a violation of your personal rights and integrity.

We act the part in hopes that someday we may live it.

I have all sorts of failings as a human being, but maintaining my clean image is not one of them.

However, maintaining a clean image requires owning up to the times you have failed. If I do something wrong, it is bad. If I do something wrong and then hide it, I'm twice shamed. Sometimes, because I'm a human being, I avoid talking about past faillings. I'm actually pretty open about these things most of the time, but it's not any better to broadcast our failings needlessly than it is to hide them. We should be willing to accept them and own them, but not necessarily bring them up for their own sake.

Not only that, but I won't act in shame for something that is not shameful. For example, we live in a Seventh Day Adventist community. We don't drink a lot of alcohol at home, but when we do, my wife tries to keep the bottles on the counter until we can take them to the city recycling bin rather than put them in the bin we place in front of our house. I refuse to do that. I will not act ashamed for what I do in accordance with my rights and preferrences. Now, on the other hand, I don't feel the need to broadcast that from time to time I consume alcohol. I don't flaunt it in front of my neighbors. I don't introduce the subject just to be a jackass.

There's a lot involved with trying to maintain a clean image. If done for its own sake, then I agree with Eddo. However, if someone just wants to live a clean life and set a good example for his children, then it's okay to avoid talking about shameful failings in his past.

This is a gift and a curse. Trust me on this one.

The way I see it then if you have a goal then you need to do what is necessary to achieve that goal. If you want a career that has certain expectations on behavior and dress then you need to adhere to that behavior and dress accordingly. That is just how society works.

If you have a tattoo that says "F**k You on your forehead don't expect getting a job, period.

So living near the ocean and surfing everyday is bad or it is related only to hot water?

Salt water is a great detoxifier: using osmosis to take the gunk out of the body via the skin.

Showering for longer than about fifteen minutes removes essential oils and nutrients form the skin.

...I really need to start using [sarcasm][/sarcasm] tags.

Or use emoticons to give context. :)
